Help us improve accessibility of our game Idle Crafting Kingdom

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the developers of the game Crafting Kingdom.
We just released the game today and we would love to know what you think, especially in terms of the game's accessibility.

The game focuses a lot on crafting resources, producing goods and then selling them.
You start out small, chopping logs in your lumberyard. Eventually you will work your way up unlock new products, buy new buildings and production facilities which allow you to produce more valuable goods.
You can also build out your own estate, if you have the necessary construction materials.

The game is incremental, which means one of the gameplay mechanics is that you need to restart your progress every now and then to get ahead. You complete quests and earn bonuses like faster production and higher sale prices for your next restart.

The game is free. There are optional ads, but no in-app purchases. The ads are voluntary rewarded videos, which will give you a powerful boost for watching (for example double log production for 10 minutes).

You can find the game here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crafting-kingdom/id1190611967?ls=1&mt=8

We tried to make this game as accessible as possible, but know that there are probably plenty of things that could be better. We would really appreciate some feedback on what could be improved. Any feedback is welcome.

Please note: The game uses Unity and the Unity Accessibility Plugin (UAP), so not all VoiceOver gestures are supported.

I think a simple change all production button would be a bit of a blunt instrument I agree that there must be an easier way to change what slots produce given that we have to swipe through everything, but I think that the feature has to be more complex, as others have said I might not want all my slots producing one product, for example in the lumber yard or the quarry there really needs to be ways you can select multiple slots at once and say you want them to produce a particular material, then select further slots and say you want these slots to make something else. a simple button to produce all of one material will just be two inflexible I think.

Frrom my own experience, I can tell you that quests where you must use a certain number of boosts or buy a certain number of automations will still be in the quest list if you don't complete them before resetting Crafting Kingdom. However, I can't tell you what happens with the quests where you must sell a certain number of products, as I have usually completed those before resetting the game.

Personally, I think it's easier to change say, 10 slots vs 30 or 40. Plus, you would get more control over productions times and quantities. Personally, I like my production to focus on one item at a time unless others are required.

Hi James,
no, quests are not replaced upon restart, unless they have been completed. For the time being, you are stuck with the randomly selected quest.

We're currently talking about if and how to make it possible to instead select your quests yourself from a list after a restart, but we're still designing this and it's not decided or anything.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

I personally love the randomness of the quests though, I'd say leave it the way it is. The user needs to be challenged to ear then rewards not chose which quests he/she can do. Or did I misread someware, if I did that's totally fine.

I find that when I try to play this with a Braille display, I get just a blank display. The only way I can navigate is by using the touchscreen and speech. I find that I can't play the game in a quiet environment or in private unless I'm wearing headphones.

By Kelvin Tan on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

i'm fine either way. to some extent, it may make this game a little more interesting having a choice of quest lists though. so u can choose which are the buildings u needing boosting, whether in terms of sale prices, or just cheaper expansion or automations. but if the decision is to leave the quest list as it is, I am perfectly fine too. hoping for more estate expansion though, as I have 1 less thing to strive for now that I have completed all estate expansion and my princess is already at %100.

By Kelvin Tan on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

hi there. u must understand that this is first and fore most not a text based game. in fact, there are many graphics in this game. so I guess that explains everything? the developer of this game just made it accessible for us to play with our phone, not things like braille displays or smart watches. just have a ear piece handy to enjoy this game anywhere my friend.

By Brandi on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Sorry, I probably came off as ungrateful. I didn't intend to come off that way. I merely thought that I was missing something and perhaps there was a way to use Braille with the game. :-) But if not, I am not any less appreciative of this great game. I think the developer(s) have done an amazing job.

I think changing multiple slots to multiple different products at once could be to confusing. I would like to see a change all button to make all slots produce the same product. If you are running multiple production chanes at once then I don't think it's unreasonable to manually configure those.
What I would like to see is a produce nothing option. Specifically I'm currently working on both a tools and a metal quest. I am making metal parts and selling the left over metal. I assume I will finish my metal quest before tools. It would be nice if there was a way to set a bunch of my quory and furnis slots to produce nothing after the metal quest is done. After the metal quest is done using the restart all button on the quory and furnis will produce a bunch of extra metal. This metal takes up storage space that could be better used to allow me to produce tools for longer before my storage fills up.

Hello to all,

I am fine with The quests either way. Whether there is a quest list or not, I am fine with it. Maybe, it can be Something you disable or enable in the options? Just a thought.
By the way, I finally excepted that invite for the test flight Stuff, so I am here when the next Vega is ready.

Goodbye for now.

By Frost on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

I'm still voting for the "Change All Production" button.
As someone has already pointed out, it will be easier to change 10 or more slots as oppose to 50 manually.
As for the quest list, I am voting for keeping them random.
As for expansions, I am about to finish my last expansion. I am also wondering if there will be any additional expansions in the future?
On the previous page, someone ask about this and was hoping for additional expansions because they thought it might be a little too repetitive to just sell products.
I am agreeing with that person.
If additional expansions are in the future of the game, a suggestion might be to use more than 2 products as a requirement, and perhaps different amounts as well, such as in the last expansion.
I'm also still hoping for a "Stop Production" button.
Yes, this is a manufacturing and selling game. However, when you are suppose to namufacture a specified number of product, and you have done so, it would be nice to be able to stop production of that product, so your valuable storage space isn't filled with unnecessary products.
Michelle, I'm wondering what are your thoughts on these things?

By SoundSchemer on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

I would also like to beta test the update. Even if they don't come out often, I know how hard the app developers are working to improve the app, even though I love it already. This is an amazing game.

By Michelle on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the "Change All Production" button feature. From what I gather, it would be helpful for more advanced players that have 10 or more production slots in a location. At the same time though it sounded like it isn't a must-have feature without which the game becomes unplayable.

We've discussed this internally and find that it is something we would like to tackle in a later update, and deal with more urgent feature requests first. The highest priority item is offering a form of cloud save. This feature is requested by sighted and blind players alike, and it's currently at the top of our list.

By alex wallis on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi michelle, any news on when we will get our space back that was eaten by the videos in crafting kingdom? for me a large amount was taken up by this bug and I really would like it back, in my view this is quite an important bug that needs solving because it affects both sighted and blind players and it ties up space indefinitely that I can't recover unless I delete and reinstall the game, I did try emailing you to ask about this and also sent in some other bug reports but didn't get a reply.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Actually for me changing more than 1 productions slot is hard and here's why.

On the android version if I change a production slot let's say at position 10 I get kicked back o the top, then I go to slot 11 and change that, I get kicked back to the top etc etc etc. I have no clue if the same hold true for iOs, so if I wanted to change slots 11-15 to be leather I should be able to do that in one fell swoop. Thoughts?

Hello can somebody give me a tip on when what I mean I really when I restart do I leave the princess a word or do I keep that and is it recommends better to have all the doing is unlocked before restarting or restart and start over I hope this is understandable and I'm at buildings and I'm at the princess Donna I meant bonus Jesse curious cause I'm thinking of restarting and I don't remember what I keep and what I will I meant I don't remember what I keep and what I lose

By riyu12345 (not verified) on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hello. When you restart, depending on what quests you do you will get mini upgrades for the next time you play. For example, if you buy the quory and then buy fifteen automations then restart, you will now have the start all autimations button unlocked that will allow you, when pressed to restart all the autimations in that building.

By Sabrina on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hello. I vote for leaving the quests the way they are. I play this game alot and really like the random quests. So that's my opinion about that. I have a question. On some quests it says that I need to do things to get ten percent lower expansion cost. What does that mean. It said farm last time. Thanks. //Sabrina.

By Clare Page on Sunday, June 25, 2017 - 17:22

I've seen in this thread that people would like to stop production of whatever product they are crafting in the middle of an automation cycle when they have a certain number of that product, to complete a quest for example, and this didn't seem possible. However, by pure luck, I've found a way of doing so. Till now, I didn't think you could change what a production slot produces till the end of your automation time, but earlier today I changed the product in a production slot before automation finished, as a test, and it worked. In my case, I'd finished a coal quest and wanted to finish an iron ore quest, so I wanted to switch production slots in the quarry to iron ore which previously produced coal. I changed most of them at the beginning of an automation cycle, but missed one, which prompted me to try the experiment above, and that thankfully proved successful.

By Taylor Brown on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

In reply to by Sabrina

That means it'll cost 10 percent less to buy new slots specifically in the farm. Like, adding slot 2 when you first buy the farm, if that makes sense.

By Sabrina on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Ah, right. That makes perfectly sence now that you say it. Thanks for the explanation.

By Michelle on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi everyone,
the next update is just around the corner, but we'd like to beta test it thoroughly before releasing it to the store. So please be patient for just a few more days.
I'll post the list of changes here as well once it is live - it can already be found on Reddit.

I also wanted to give an update on the storage space issue.
We investigated the problem, we really spend quite a lot of time on it - but we haven't been able to find a solution for the issue yet. It appears that the cached videos sometimes don't get properly removed after playing. We contacted the company that provided us with the plugin, but they cannot help either, because each ad provider is using their own proprietary and closed source code to download and display the videos. We've also looked into locating the videos from code in an attempt to delete them automatically, but it seems they are hidden. To make it worse, the problem doesn't occur all the time, not on all devices and apparently not with all ad providers.

Right now, our only known working solution would be to implement a cloud save option as soon as possible, so that you can back up your game, delete it from the hard drive and reinstall. That will clean out the storage. It's not exactly a brilliant solution, but at least one that we can achieve. We don't want to delay this any longer, because taking up valuable space is not a small matter to us.

This current update doesn't yet include cloud save, because we couldn't get it done in time. It is now on the top of our list and we're planning to include that with the next update.

By Kelvin Tan on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

really looking forward to beta testing the next version of this game. hopefully the version number has been updated so as once the version is live, I will receive the update from the app store. i'm actually still playing with the beta version as I did not receive any update from the app store since the full release of the current version went live some months back.

By Kelvin Tan on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

hi michelle and team.

got another suggestion/featback. I think some of the higher quests' rewards got to be adjusted again. I spent about a month or more finishing the buy 5000 automations quest, and only got 5 more minutes of automation. I kind of think this reward is a little less considering the time and effort put in to completing this quest. and guess what right after I restarted again, I got the buy 10000 automations quest, and also it's just 5 more minutes of automation for buying 10000 automations, which will probably take me more than 2 months to finally complete this quest. a friend of mine also got the use 5000 boosts and also, the reward is just another 5 minutes of boost duration which I think deserve an increase of boost time as a reward. hope u and your team can discuss and consider this.

played this game like since it's release, and i'm still loving it. hope there will be more estate expansions soon as I always end each playthrough with too much gold. and oh speaking of gold, i got another bug to report. once your amount of gold exceeds about 1.2 billion, i will hear that i have negative gold for some reason. please look in to this as well? keep up the great work!

By themusicman08 on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

I would like to please see the speed possibly being increased for the game. Sometimes when playing the game, after a while, the game becomes very sluggish and I have to quit and save, or just close the game out entirely from the app switcher. Also, for Voiceover, by default it uses the compact Samantha voice and i would like to see an option where it looks at the speech voices you have installed even if they are higher quality voices and you can use one of those. Also one more thing that i think should be looked at is the music. I want to first say that the music that plays is not a bad piece of music at all. It is very relaxing and calm. But, are their other pieces of music that can be put in to an update? Maybe something at the start of the game, then when you start the game you hear that music, and if you go in to other places of the game once again the music changes?

By Justin on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi,
not exactly sure if you have your system voice set to anything other than compact samantha. If you use the accessibility mode, that is, play without VO turned on, as far as I know, it uses whatever system voice that is selected. For instance, my game is using Alex as it's voice, with a fairly fast speaking rate. I don't know exactly if that is how the access mode is supposed to work in the game with reading prompts, but that's how mine works!

By Justin on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Alrighty! I have come up with the perfect solution for anyone's speech issues. Please turn off Voiceover once you are in accessibility mode. If you are using a voice with a slower speaking rate, go into settings>general>accessibility>speech, and go to voices. once there, select whatever language you use. Go into that, and select the voice, for instance siri male. please note: this is your device's system voice, not the Voiceover voice. So, this is the voice that reads if you use the speak screen command, or speak selection item. You can set your speaking rate for the system voice in the speedch panel under accessibility settings.
HTH, and good luck kingdom crafters!

By Jessica Brown on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

It would be nice if you could change the speech rate of the system voice but I could not make it work. I followed the instructions exactly and then closed Crafton kingdom and the settings app and when I restarted Crofton kingdom with voice over off it is still a slow voice. Sorry for the miss spellings stupid dictation.

By Clare Page on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Even though I usually play Crafting Kingdom with VoiceOver on, I followed the instructions above to change my iPhone's system voice to Kate Enhanced, the same voice I use as the default voice in VoiceOver. However, when I reopened Crafting Kingdom after changing the system voice and its speaking rate in Settings, I still had a slow compact Samantha. Thankfully, Crafting Kingdom rarely gives me navigation problems when VoiceOver is on these days, so I can still use Kate while playing this game, mostly avoiding Samantha, who has never been one of my favourite voices by a long shot. At some point I may restart my phone to see if that makes the system voice change, but in the meantime I'll continue to play Crafting Kingdom with VO running as i usually do.

By alex wallis on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi Michelle, its great to know the cloud save feature will allow for saving of the game so that I can delete and reinstall the app to reclaim my space I appreciate that you have spent a lot of time trying to find a solution to the video ads issue.

But I have a question, what are the plans to ensure that the game doesn't keep eating space up for new players of the game or for those who for whatever reason don't or can't purchase the full version?
I think the description of the game should be updated to inform people that this could be an issue as they might not realize.
I think also maybe if there is no easy way for you to determine which advert providers are the cause of the game eating space for those who have to watch the adverts that you should consider getting rid of video adverts and trying to have them replaced with text based adverts as some other apps do, in fact there are some adverts in other apps I have scene which are totally invisible to VoiceOver so they display but as far as VoiceOver is concerned they are not there. I just feel that users should be informed that this is a potential issue and that if there is no proper solution alternative adverts need to be considered or as an alternative maybe some kind of subscription model could be considered to allow for game play and for you to continue to raise revenue to fund further development. as although its nice to have an advert free game its also important you have money to continue developing it which you might not be able to do if we all purchase ad free, and you make no money from displaying them. Unfortunately this happens with a lot of games for blind players people buy them but then there isn't enough money to maintain them or they are simply abandoned by developers.

By Rafaela Freundt on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi Michelle, I wanted to suggest that you add a way in which the app detects that voiceover is on and turns accessibility on. I thought you could turn accessibility on by triple tapping but it doesn't seem to work and when I turned it of to show the game to a friend I couldn't turn it back on without sighted help. Thank you for all you have been doing to make the game accessible.

By Bellsfurmama on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hi, Michelle. I am so excited that a new update will be out soon! Thank you.

Do you plan to add any new products or buildings to the game?

By themusicman08 on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

Hello all:

I also tried the instructions above for changing the voice and that didn't work. It still comes up with compact Samantha and after about 30 minutes, sluggishness is still experienced with the game. I would really like to use the female or male Siri voices for this game if at all possible.

Hello,
I've always hated the default, but if you enter the app with your voiceover on and turn your rotor, direct touch or something like that should come up, and you can flick up so that in games like this, your touch will pass through and Voiceover will read the text, not whatever voice they set it up to use.

By alex wallis on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 17:22

I don't have to do anything to my VoiceOver rotor to get VoiceOver to read the game, I just start the game and it works fine at the speed I have my VoiceOver set to, I can't really see much reason to use the system voice now apart from maybe if your on an older device where its sluggish with VoiceOver.

By musicmyxstress on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

Has anyone noticed, during gameplay, VoiceOver not responding to some swipes? It's as if direct touch turns off for a few moments, then comes back on.
Apart from the dilemma between that, and the slowness of the system voice, I'm loving this game, I've been playing it since July.

By Justin on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

yeah, definitely noticed that. One thing that could be improved is the swiping gesture. IT's like when swiping fast to restarting automations it seems like the game isn't registering my swipes correctly, or it looses focus and jumps around slots which is quite annoying. Like I said, improving the swiping is probably my biggest issue in the game.

By Nolly on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

The game has for a lack of a better term a memory leak when you have played for an extended period of time. This is especially true when you have 30, 40, 50, plus production slots going. This is compounded if the items created are producing multiple quantities at a quick pace, such as logs. Simply closing the app does not fix thisissue, you must close the app then soft restart your phone. I can not confirm if this will work for everyone, but it works on our IPhone 6s plus, 5s and the latest IPad model that was released this year.

By Clare Page on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

I quite often find that simply restarting the Crafting Kingdom app can make the swiping in the game work better these days, but, if that doesn't work AND SWIPING CONTINUES TO BE SLUGGISH, OR WORSE STILL? THE GAME SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY STUCK? I WILL completely restart my iPhone 6. Luckily the game behaves well on my iPhone most of the time: at one point a few weeks ago I had to restart my phone regularly, but I haven't had to do that very often more recently, even when I have lots of production slots going.

By Bellsfurmama on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

@Musicmyxtress, the game is addicting isn't it? I've been playing since April and can't keep my slots producing for long.

I have had the freeze up glitch too and restarting the game does fix it. Same solution works for the game when swipes start taking you to the bottom of the castle instead of to boost slots, etc.

Has anyone completed the 1 million leather strip challenge? It is taking me forever.

I haven't had the 1000000 leather strips quest yet, but my quests are gradually getting longer, and that happens the more you play and reset Crafting Kingdom. I am currently in the middle of a 5000000 timber quest which may take me most of the week at the rate I'm going, in spite of me increasing storage at every opportunity, so that it'll take a bit longer to fill up and more timber can go towards the total. So watch out, if you keep playing, you're bound to get longer and longer quests in the future!

By Kelvin Tan on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

I have to agree that this version of the game seem to have brought back the unresponsive swipes problem when u have a higher number of production slots. in the previous version of this game, I will have to turn off voice over to configure what I want to produce for a particular slot once I pass slot 60 or so, but in this version, as soon as I hit about 30 plus slots, often with voice over on, double tapping starts to sometimes not work at all. in general, the faster a production slot produces a product e.g. logs, the faster this problem of unresponsive swipes or double taps will begin. also, if u have say more than 80 slots in a particular building, it is very unlikely that u will be able to swipe at all once u enter a building. u will not even be able to get to the restart all production slots button as the game kind of freezes or becomes unresponsive once u enter that particular building. 1 way u can go around this is to wait till your storage is full, and the u should be able to enter the that building to restart your production etc. but again, this may only work if u close out the game from app switcher, or better still restart your phone. another thing that can help in dealing with these sluggish problems is to maintain your phone battery at above 80 or 85 percent always. I find that when my battery level is higher, the problems mentioned above does not happen as much. on the whole, I think this version of the game is using up more system resource, therefore resulting in the old problems coming back.

By Kelvin Tan on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

well, the 5 million number is no longer a stranger to me. here are the products that I have completed the 5 million sale quests for so far:
logs. timber. everything in the farm. coal. stone. metal. silver bar. salt. metal parts. well, at now I know I won't see any more sale quests for the above products. many of my other products in the furnace and mine and workshop are also at the 600k, 1 million or 2 million mark. I have also completed the 15k storage, 750m in bank, and 10k boosts quest, which I believe is the last of their individual quest lines, and currently also on another final quest in its quest line which is buy 10k automations. I really hope more quest lines and products can be added to this game soon, as once u finish the storage, boosts, money in bank, and buy automations quests, this game somehow becomes a little monotonous because all the quests u will get are just sell sell sell and sell and nothing much else to look forward to. I also now hardly need to restart my automations as regularly anymore because my automation duration is now 345 minutes, with a boost duration of 45 minutes and bag of gold boost 819k per minute, it doesn't take me very long to get my storage to 30 or 40k at all which when doing quests like selling things like armor, raw diamonds, clothes etc I don't have to keeping having to open the game to clear my storage anymore.

I was just given a quest to get 2 million logs! No doubt about it, this one's going to take some major production time, using a lot of slots! I'm also working on that darned quest of accumulating 5,000 automations. Also, if you haven't found out what happens if you do not visit the Princess for a few days, go ahead and try it on purpose. (ornery grin)

By Bellsfurmama on Friday, August 25, 2017 - 17:22

Wow, I have no idea how I will complete longer quests that are in the millions. I just finished the one million leather strip one last night.

I keep hoping I will get more treasure chest challenges and bag of gold ones. So that motivates me to work hard at completing challenges.
