Help us improve accessibility of our game Idle Crafting Kingdom

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the developers of the game Crafting Kingdom.
We just released the game today and we would love to know what you think, especially in terms of the game's accessibility.

The game focuses a lot on crafting resources, producing goods and then selling them.
You start out small, chopping logs in your lumberyard. Eventually you will work your way up unlock new products, buy new buildings and production facilities which allow you to produce more valuable goods.
You can also build out your own estate, if you have the necessary construction materials.

The game is incremental, which means one of the gameplay mechanics is that you need to restart your progress every now and then to get ahead. You complete quests and earn bonuses like faster production and higher sale prices for your next restart.

The game is free. There are optional ads, but no in-app purchases. The ads are voluntary rewarded videos, which will give you a powerful boost for watching (for example double log production for 10 minutes).

You can find the game here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crafting-kingdom/id1190611967?ls=1&mt=8

We tried to make this game as accessible as possible, but know that there are probably plenty of things that could be better. We would really appreciate some feedback on what could be improved. Any feedback is welcome.

Please note: The game uses Unity and the Unity Accessibility Plugin (UAP), so not all VoiceOver gestures are supported.

Hello Michelle, I emailed you a couple weeks ago about being a beta tester but did not hear back. Are you still accepting beta testers?

By hllf on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

All,

Can we please stop with the beta tester spam? Michelle is obviously a very capable app developer with the ability to handle complex project management tasks, so I am sure she is also capable of finding and requesting beta testers as needed. Spamming her with emails and posts to this thread is not going to encourage her to add you to the team, and as a software developer myself, I can say that such insistent requests really serve no purpose other than to piss off developers.

If and when Michelle needs more beta testers, I have no doubt she will be in contact with those she feels would be good additions to the team.

By Paul Martin on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I was initially not about to say anything on this ongoing beta thing seeing as my fingers are still a little tired like the phone battery from being much faster than automation in our beloved game in question, but I must second the previous post dealing with this. Were i a developer seeking folks to test my work out there, i'd soon use the private contact forum.
On a side note: Wouldn't spelling out email addresses in public postings make it easy work for those spam email daemons? I'm sure they run automated searches for phrases such as "email me at" or "my email address is", then fire away something at the text following those 2 phrases assuming it looks like a valid email address. I get enough junk about energy gum and other such things without making my address so easy to find.
Before I get too much further off the tracks, i must say what an outstanding accomplishment this is. I can play a game that's written in a notoriously unusable way for those who must rely on Voiceover, and I'd say that missing things such as character/word review are quite insignificant compared to this fact. I can't even say in words how excited when I first launched this game, and got it going with speech a few seconds later. I did have to enable accessibility mode manually with Voiceover turned off, but that didn't diminish the feeling of excitement at all. Think of what the future may hold for games now!
Oh yes; those "crafty" things. I move rather swiftly through screens at most times, especially when I hear the sound of a treasure chest after hitting the back button and returning to the main world. On a consistent basis though, I'm returned to the "World Map" label just after flicking to the much sought after treasure chest button. The same can be seen when trying to hurry to the "sell all" button in the city, also landing me back at the city label when I've already at that time flicked quite a few times down and once right to hit it.
Also, I find I can touch things and have them respond, but it's rather unresponsive. This one really is not a big deal for me, even though I do tend to touch rather than flick.

Hi to Hllf and Paul,

I agree with you both, but when you are a developer who gets a billion emails/lists, etc to keep up with, sometimes you have to take extra measures to make sure what you have written was actually read, as sometimes, when keeping with so much, plus with developing, an email can just go poof into outer space, and never get read. But yes, if it is an email address you care about I'd be careful, but if it is not, then whatever, lol. But anyway, I love this game too. I must admit, it is extremely addicting. But agreed, if it is a private email address, I wouldn't post it anywhere you don't want it.

Weapons need silver, leather and timber, one of each.
If you ever need to know what ingredients you need for a product, go inside your production slot and select that item for production. Then, when you swipe right past the other products, you will get a list of required ingredients.

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Hi. I just wanted to say how much I love the game. This is the first of its kind for blind gamers.

I was wondering: will more crafting matterials and buildings be added?

By Steady on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

just sharing this while waiting for the update.3 out of my 6 quests need quarry products. 150 thousand metal parts which is the fastest because i've already unlocked the 4th boost slot, 600 thousand iron ore and 1 million stones. i wonder what are they trying to build with those. haha! looking forward to the new update to help me speed up my production. the other 3 quests will also take a long time to complete. have 10000 storage space, buy 5000 automations and use 2500 boosts. my quest slots are all jammed up now, but is a happy problem. so far, most production slots i have in 1 property is 33, highest storage space is 7000, restarted 3 times in 1 day.

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

hi steady. i'm sure u will like the next update to this game, as there will be more than your current 6 quests that u will unlock once u restart. I am one of the beta testers, and I would say so far the performance of this upcoming version has really improved a lot. i can now use voice over to cycle through my slots without a hitch now. only some of the numbering bug is still present. e.g. when i am swiping right through my quest list, i will hear, sell 600 thousand timber, then swiping right i will get, reward: plus 5 minutes automation, then, i will hear 4 0 3 4 4 3 of 6 0 0 0 0 0. this will happen only to the quests with bigger numbers, i would assume once it reach 150k of any item. my biggest quest now is sell 1 million wool and the highest number of slots i ever had in a building is 35 hahaha. estate is up to 110 percent now, an imposing citadel surrounded by a mode and a draw bridge.

By Steady on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

In reply to by Kelvin Tan

sounds like it's ready to go live. really can't wait for more production slots, productivity and higher sale price. i am prepared to restart any time. the number bug is not a bug at all. it is more of a user problem, but for you as a tester is only right to report when it is not working as expected. i feel that michelle is a little over accommodating to the special needs like the number reading and the sell 1, adding a lot of unnecessary work.

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

haha I have to agree with u there steady. personally i haven't ever used the sell 1 button before even back when it was available in the older version of this game. in fact, i can't think of any circumstance that will ever require me to just sell 1 of any product. maybe i still have something to learn in terms of strategy for playing this game. the sell 1 button is really useless when i am dealing with thousands and thousands of products being required for quests, and also often i have to multi task a lot so there is definitely no cause for using the sell 1 button at anytime. i feel to play this game well, it's about annalysing your quest list at the start of each playthrough, and decide which are the quests that i wanna do before restarting. sometimes i only just complete just 1 quest and then i will restart because the oteher quests requires too much time or too expensive a building to do quickly enough to help me get more powerful in the shortest time possible. for now, even building the jeweler isn't going to take too much time for me as my sale prices for almost any product in any building are quite high. i have don't so so so many quests since i started playing this game. in fact, the only products left that i have not done a 50 thousand sale for so far are iron ore, copper ore, weapons, silver ore, gold ore, raw diamond, belt, and all of the jeweler products. the rest of the products i am mostly up to the selling 75k to 300k mark, with the products from lumber yard and farm all getting close to selling a million. so, i wonder, can the sell 1 button help me do my quests and become a master crafter faster? hmmm....

By Clare Page on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

In reply to by Kelvin Tan

There has never been a Sell 1 button in Crafting Kingdom since I installed the game, but I can think of one situation where it would be useful. In the estate expansions, you need so many of one product to expand your estate, for example my next estate expansion will need 1000 metal: if, somehow, I end up with 1005 metal, I could hit Sell 1 five times to get down to the exact amount needed, rather than selling off the extra metal after the expansion. I agree that Sell 1 is not so useful for completing the quests in the castle, and i've coped fine without it so far, but if it comes back in a future update I may well make good use of it when working on estate expansions.

high Clare, in that situation, you have to hit the sell 1 button 6 times because by the time you sell 5, the furnace has produce 1 more metal. after estate expansion, you have to go back to the city to sell more, unless you can time your production to stop at that amount.

Hello,

Seeing as I wasnt a beta tester, I, like others, cant wait for the update. So exciting!

By DrummerGuy on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

In reply to by Kelvin Tan

Z I agree with those who think that the cell one button is not much of a big deal. Anyways, it is true that when you are selling thousands and thousands of products one more or one les is not going to make you any richer or poorer. Anyways, with or without it, this game is awesome.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I'm loving the update for android, a lot faster and if it is anythig like he ios update that is goign to be wonderful!

Take care

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

btw to all the beta testers, has anyone unlocked any new quest lines yet? e.g. those that will unlock the start all automations button? I have restarted with 7 new quests slots but none of them were quests from the new quest lines.

By DrummerGuy on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

In reply to by Kelvin Tan

I haven't gotten any new quests yet, but I know that they are given randomly so, with a little bit of luck, one of those quests will come soon enough.

By Jared on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Does Michel or any of the beta testers have an idea when the update will be available to all of us who are not beta testers?

By Chris Chaffin on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Hello Michelle and all,
First, I absolutely love the game and have to admit, I am addicted!
Sorry for the lengthy message, but I am thinking that something is not right with the production time of logs and timber. Well, at least when you are using logs to produce timber. I just can not get the numbers to equal what it says. Let me explain.
Now just to tell you my stats; I produce 2 logs every 2.9 seconds, 2 timber every 9.5 seconds, and my automation time is 50 minutes.
Here is what I do, and here is my results:
I currently used 2 log slots, but had to use 5 timber slots to use up all of the logs.
I made total timber of 2700+ in my 50 minute automation time.
To do this, this means I had to produce over 8100 logs (2700 times 3), and this is just not possible with 2 slots in my 50 minute automation time.
Here are the actual calculations when using my current stats:
I produce 2 logs every 2.9 seconds for 50 minutes. This comes to 2070 logs for every production slot. So 2 production slots would be a total of 4140 logs. Which is about half of what I actually produced.
How did I come up with this:
In my 50 minute automation time, this is equal to a total of 3000 seconds.
Divide 3000 by 2.9 seconds, and this will give you the number of single logs that will be produced. This comes to 1035. Since I produce 2 logs every 2.9 seconds, I multiplied this by 2, which is 2070 for every slot.
Remember I had 2 slots, so you would multiply the 2070 by 2, and that will give you the 4140 logs.

Now for the timber:
If I am using 2 production slots of logs, and produce a total of 4140 logs, then if it takes 3 logs to make 1 timber, then that would mean that I should be able to produce a total of 1380 timber providing I have enough slots to cover that production.
From my calculations, timber is producing correctly, it is just the logs that is producing about double what it is suppose too.

I know this is not a major problem, but could you please check into this. It does make a difference when you are trying to figure how many slots you need to produce what you need.

As far as I can tell the way it works is the following. When you get a +1 production bonus the number of inputs do not change, but every time a product is produced you get an extra one. For example if you have 300 logs normally you get 100 timber. If you have the +1 production bonus you would get 200 timber. Don't think about the production bonus in timber. Calculate the number of timber slots required to use up all your log production, and do the calculations assuming you only have one timber every 9.5 seconds. This will insure you don't have any extra logs left over, but you will magically get double the number of expected timber based on the logs input.

Up until last night I would select a boost then the add would play then i would press get and the app store would load then I would return to the game and keep playing. Now when I switch back to the game it immediately switches back to the app store and I have to close all apps to keep playing and I sometimes don't even get the boost after doing that.

Hi everybody, the update was just approved by Apple and is now available to download!
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to every one who helped beta test this version. We received a tremendous amount of helpful feedback, without which we would have missed many many bugs. Thank you! Your help is much appreciated!

You can find the full changelist here in our sub reddit. This is also a good place to discuss strategies and tactics by the way!

Hi Michelle,

Thank you and everyone who has worked on this fabulous new update so, so much. I've just played through one production cycle and I'm blown away. No more wildly dancing focus. No more lost treasure chests because I keep tripping over the word "Map"! And oh, the joy of not having to watch the same video for the fifty zillionth time and then, when I get back to the game, find my storage full! I also love the new sound innovations, how cool are they! And I do hope I get that quest to unlock the restart all automations button soon! I'm just so so thrilled with this update, thanks so much for all the hard work done by the team at MetalPop and the beta testing team. This game just gets better.

Thanks Jared, that was it, and what you said makes total sense. I was just not aware things worked that way! Now to download and check out the update!

A very big wow goes out to Michelle and the developing team!! Great update!!
The snappiness and ease of moving around is amazing!! Very well done!!
I love all of the new features, thank you very much for all of your dedication and hard work!!

Michelle,

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to both creating a great game, as well as to accessibility since the beginning. I have not yet played since updating, but the new features/fixes look amazing.

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

hi michelle i am one of the beta testers for this game. strangely, i did not receive any updates in the appstore, but when i went to my purchased items in the appstore i saw that the newest version is 1.35 and downloaded it. but after downloading and opening the game, it seemed to have reverted to the older version, the one without the newer sounds and better voice over behaviour. should i have just not downloaded the newer version from the app store and have just continued playing the beta as it is? a bit confused here. appstore shows that it's version 1.35, but when i downloaded it, it seems that it's the older version that i am playing.

By hllf on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Your problem is that you did not get the latest version from the App Store. The update just released today is version 1.4, not 1.35. So the behavior you are seeing is correct, as you installed the older version. I'd check the App Store again for version 1.4. If you are not in the US, it's also possible the new update hasn't hit your App Store yet.

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

the strange thing is, when I check on the updates area of appstore, I did not get an update for crafting kingdom. but however when I go in to my purchased items, and locate crafting kingdom, I see from the description that it's now version 1.4. but instead of the update button, I only got the download button. and after downloading, the version of the game seem to be the older version. I even tried going to test flight to untest the game, but it's no use. is it a version number naming problem that my beta has? maybe my beta version has a higher version number than the current official version? but I highly doubt so as I have checked my beta version is 1.2something. now when I click on the link given to me in the email from testflight, it doesn't seem to let me test the game anymore. have any other beta tester here encountered this problem of being unable to update? or is there anything else I can do other than uninstalling the game and restarting all the way from the beginning again?

The current version I have is 1.2.0. I have gone to the App Store to look for the update and I have not been able to find it. It doesn't show as an update to me.

By SoundSchemer on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

This update, has really enhanced my excitement with this game. I have 7 slots in the lumberyard, and have set them all to logs. My storage is 300 so far.

Hi

I'm assuming that the developers of the Crafting Kingdom game are reading this thread. I do not play the game myself, but I just wanted to thank you for the enormous efforts you have gone to in order to ensure the game is accessible to blind users. My wife Lulu, (a contributor to this conversation), has gained hours of pleasure from the game, even prior to the recent update. Lulu is a lady with disabilities in addition to a visual impairment, meaning at times she suffers considerable pain. This game has helped to take her mind off the pain and other issues during the bad times. It is good to find a game where no fighting is involved, just pure entertainment, and I know she loves it.
I often listen to her play Crafting Kingdom, and I can appreciate how much thought and input has gone into ensuring VoiceOver users can obtain the information they need.

I just wanted to thank you again and I sincerely hope that you continue to improve Crafting Kingdom and perhaps to develop other games. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Crafting Kingdom showed up in the Updates Tab in the App Store on my iPhone 6 last night, so I installed the update, and, this update worked brilliantly during the one production cycle I did just after that installation. I closed the app after that to go to sleep, and when i opened it again this morning, the whole World map screen was ultra-sluggish, with double-tapping not working at all and even finding various elements on the screen being difficult. Thankfully re-starting my iPhone this morning has made Crafting Kingdom work properly again. I did the in-app purchase to get boosts without videos last night, and also made use of the Sell 1 button to get the amount of metal required for my next estate expansion from 1004 down to 1000, but I can't yet restart all automations, I hope I'll soon get the quest for that. In spite of the temporary glitch experienced this morning, which I hope won't happen again, I am definitely pleased with this new update. Thanks again to the developers for such an excellent game, and for working so hard on so many improvements to it.

By Portia on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Hello all,

I must say, I myself am very impressed as well. I myself have Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy, so I definitely find this game very exciting, and rewarding. It is very awesome to play.

May the updates keep coming, and development not cease anytime soon. I really hope to see this game continue into the foreseeable future, as this is a wonderful game for a lot of people.

I mean, The no fighting concept is so wonderful! I myself could probably be considered a wimp as well, because I also don't like goriness, and the like. So this is amazing to see this game be developed. I have always wanted a crafting game, and seeing as there weren't any for so long, that's why I didn't really know which platform to stay with when I kept switching ages ago. But now, I am so happy to see this game on both platforms… LOL. But anyways, great, excellent, work. Keep it up. The more people beta test, and the more that can provide feedback, the better things in general will become for blind users.

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I am so addicted to Crafting Kingdom! I am on my third or fourth restart and I just downloaded the update. Thank you so much for all the hard work; I love it!

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Hi, Michelle. Have you thought about adding an orchard with apples, grapes, etc.? Also, other products could be added to the current buildings.

By Ornella on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I agree about the orchard so we definetly get more stuff to do. We could harvest oranges , apples and lemons and fill up bottles for juice and do other stuff. Love the new update and the sound effects are better and more realistic. My question is I haven't played in a long time since this new update and I want to know when is the best time to unlock the timber in the lumber yard? I still have a few quest to complete so I'm wondering if I should unlock it before I complete all the first set of quest or on my next restart. Thanks and have a nice day.

By Steady on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

hi michelle, thank you for the new update. i don't have to turn off voice over to start production any more. cool! just checking on my quest reward. i have a use 2500 boosts and buy 5000 automations quest. both rewards are plus 5 minutes boost duration and plus 5 minutes automation respectively, no change from the previous version. is it ment to be?

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I would go ahead and unlock timber as it will give you more revenue.

BTW, love the idea about juice bottling! I love fruit and just thought it would be a cool addition.

A glass factory could make bottles and you would need to unlock those before you could unlock juice.

Cold have more than four fruits to make it fun. Oranges and lemons for sure! :)

By Ornella on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I'm guessing that if we get to bottle juice we could use a blender or juicer so it gives us something to do manually while other things are going on in the game. In the future ad a bakery or some kind of shop so we could produce different types of food to make more money. For example if we want to make muffins, we would have to go to the factory to get wheat and maybe the farm to get eggs or where ever. That's just my idea.

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

I'm sorry. I am posting again because while playing I had another idea. Quests could unlock new products.

Michelle, my hands are sore I have been playing this so much! Thanks for reading all the comments!

By Bellsfurmama on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Oh I love the idea of producing eggs, and donuts. Lol. Honestly, the sky is the limit for Crafting Kingdom!

I know that lots of people reading this are looking forward to getting the quest whose reward is being able to restart all automations in production buildings, me included, but, if I understand right, we have to patiently wait for that till our quests change. After the update to the latest version I didn't get any extra quests, in fact I still have the same ones I had in the previous version, but, judging from what I've read recently, I gather that the quests we get are random, so, if that's correct, any of us could get the quest which will reward us with the ability to restart all automations after our next game restart. In the meantime, I'm very pleased to be able to whiz through my production slots to manually restart automations without having to turn VO off.

Hi all.

Something really weird just happened. It came time for the princess to give me my daily gift, and I was really excited to finally get more than forty per cent rise in sales prices. So there I was, waiting for the moment when my open gift button would pop up, and when I went to look, the button had clicked over from the number of minutes till available to twenty three hours and sundry seconds till next gift. It's a little thing, but I'm frankly gutted! That little rise in sales would help right now as I'm grinding like mad. Has anyone else had this happen?

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

hi michelle and all. I suspect that there may be a bug in the unlocking of the new quest line that unlocks the start all automations buttons. I have restarted twice, with almost 16 chances of getting 1 of the new quests from the new quest line, but maybe due to luck, I did not get any of them. a friend of mine who is also playing this game vigorously also has restarted with no luck of getting any quest from the new quest line. seems like no other players have responded positively of getting any new quest line quests from this forum too. so maybe it's worth looking in to?

the game currently occupies 1.26gb on my iPhone, and the original size of this game is actually less than 100 mb. so not sure what's taking up the space on my phone there. u can check out how much of space on your phone this game takes up by going to settings, general, storage and icloud, and manage storage. I suspect it's due to the large number of videos I have watched in the past before the ability to remove adds which is occupying the space on my phone now.

lastly, can u please add me back to the test flight for crafting kingdom? I tried to stop testing the game because I wanted to try to trigger the ability to finally download the official version 1.4 of this game by choosing to stop testing this game and uninstalling test flight, but it still did not work. tried using the email link from the test flight email but it does not work anymore it seems. please do add me back. thank u so so much for this wonderful and addictive game. i'm sure it will only get even better and better over time! more products? more buildings? more boosts? all fine with me!

By alex wallis on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

Hi all, unfortunately it seems as though lots of people jumping on the testing band wagon really don't understand about what happens when a new appstore update comes out that effectively replaces the test version. Unfortunately the appstore doesn't give notifications when new official builds come out once you have a beta build of an app installed which yes I agree is pretty bad as how is someone supposed to know that they can update from a test version unless a developer tells them.
anyway you don't have to leave the testing team or anything to install or even reinstall an appstore version, you don't have to delete the beta app or anything.
to either update to an official appstore release or even go back to an old version once your testing the app. to downgrade or upgrade to an official version, simply go to the appstore, search for crafting kingdom and press the download button, this will replace a beta build automatically, people really should do research or ask if they are not sure about testing.

to those having princess issues there are definitely issues with the princess, as I have noticed a widespread problem where when I get a new gift from her I open it but lots of sale prices don't update, the strange thing is sometimes prices do update one day then the next day don't, and its not always the same prices that do or don't update.
This was an issue in the beta as well and seems to be continuing in the official release as well.
I have provided evidence of this to michelle, but I am the only person who has reported this so far, but its possible that I pay very close attention to my sale prices. If other people pay close attention and also spot this, please let michelle know.

By Kelvin Tan on Thursday, May 25, 2017 - 14:32

hi alex. I did manually go to the app store to attempt to download the latest official version, but if u have seen my earlier post, it seems that mine is still the older version, the one without the newer sounds, and also the one without the ability to purchase the no adds feature. that was why I tried to do other things to try to get the latest official version to show up in the app store. anyway, I just tried downloading again from the appstore, but it's still the same. still the older version.
