Help us improve accessibility of our game Idle Crafting Kingdom

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the developers of the game Crafting Kingdom.
We just released the game today and we would love to know what you think, especially in terms of the game's accessibility.

The game focuses a lot on crafting resources, producing goods and then selling them.
You start out small, chopping logs in your lumberyard. Eventually you will work your way up unlock new products, buy new buildings and production facilities which allow you to produce more valuable goods.
You can also build out your own estate, if you have the necessary construction materials.

The game is incremental, which means one of the gameplay mechanics is that you need to restart your progress every now and then to get ahead. You complete quests and earn bonuses like faster production and higher sale prices for your next restart.

The game is free. There are optional ads, but no in-app purchases. The ads are voluntary rewarded videos, which will give you a powerful boost for watching (for example double log production for 10 minutes).

You can find the game here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crafting-kingdom/id1190611967?ls=1&mt=8

We tried to make this game as accessible as possible, but know that there are probably plenty of things that could be better. We would really appreciate some feedback on what could be improved. Any feedback is welcome.

Please note: The game uses Unity and the Unity Accessibility Plugin (UAP), so not all VoiceOver gestures are supported.

glad to know I am not the only one who has found sale prices don't always increase properly with the princess, I found this a while ago when I lost some of my 100 percent gift, I found that prices in some areas increased but in other areas they didn't, it seemed to be a particular issue with things that would have very small increases. I also found that this wasn't consistent one day prices wouldn't increase in an area but the next day they would increase in that area but not go up in a different one. I have my doubts if my prices are actually correct as far as the princess goes because of what I observed in the past. I also found that when the gift from the princess was decreased prices weren't reduced. I did tell michelle about this sometime ago but she came back to me and said the code was working correctly, so I am glad to know its not just me.

Hi again,

I don’t really think that the princess is working properly. Whenever I load my game from the cloud, the princess resets itself. I lost favor because it did that. Also, how do we know that the princess is increasing? I don’t see where it does.

Thanks,

Jenn

I'm also having a similar problem on android. I go to collect my gift and it will flip back to 24 hours. I then end up going down by 4 percent points and it takes about 2-3 days for me to get there. I do notice the increase though so it works here, I think. It is a small increase but it all will add up.

By the way I kow this is not an android forum but I tried contacting the dev last July with soe of the issues via email but no joy. Those issues were fixed though so far so I dunno.

By alex wallis on Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 14:27

I think michelle has stopped replying directly to emails because she gets so many, but she does listen to feedback. though it would be cool to get some kind of automatic reply just for piece of mind that emails have been received rather than disappeared into the depths of the internet never to be read or scene again.
just out of curiosity why are people trying to frequently load from cloud its only meant as a backup solution don't think its intended for people to do it regularly only in the event that you have to reinstall the app or reload the game etc.
there are definitely still kinks with cloud save to work out though as the music setting isn't respected if you turn it off it comes back on if you load from cloud or it did last time I tried.

I did also just have an idea for a new feature though not sure if it is a good idea or not, a way to auto sell items so you could enter a target number of items and if you store that amount the game could automatically sell them for you. What do people think?

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 14:27

I agree. Well here's hoping I can somehow get the report to her as I am suffering most of the same bugs you are on iOs on android if that makes sense. I really love the game. On I think level 4 of my estate. It took me about 8 months to get there though lol! I don't play every day, but yeah this game is fun.

By Clare Page on Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 14:27

I've noticed that several people have reported that the countdown to the princess's gift being given starts from 22 hours again after a cloud save, thinking this was a bug, but I don't think it's a bug at all. It was just pointed out that the cloud save is for backup, but probably the best times to do such a backup are if you are about to change to a new i-device or if you expect to have to restore your current i-device for some reason. In those cases, it's logical that there should be a full countdown before the princess gives her next gift after starting to play Crafting Kingdom again on a new or restored device, as you're resuming the game, with new automations and so on, having reloaded it after a device upgrade or restoration. I have only done a cloud save once since it was available, but that was just to test it: the next time I do one will probably be just before I upgrade my iphone, which I hope to do sometime in the next few months.

Hi everybody,
sorry for my long absence, I just came back from a three week work crunch and didn't have time to comment here.

I do try to answer emails, but in all honesty, an email is much easier to get lost in my overflowing inbox than a post here. AppleVis automatically sends me an email every time a new post is added here. And when I come to check back, I always read all the ones I missed too.

I tried to make a list of all the question I hadn't had time to answer yet. Here they are (let me know if I missed something).

4 finger swipe: Unfortunately I didn't yet have time to further investigate this. The performance issues on iOS with VoiceOver are my top priority at the moment. I'll come back around to this, but it's on the backburner for now.

Focus and performance issues: I haven't yet found a solution, but this is mainly because of my limited time in the last three weeks. Now that the crunch is out of the way, I am hoping to be able to resolve this soon.

Cloud Save and the Princess: The princess does indeed reset to 22 hours when a game is loaded from cloud. This was a necessary evil due to the limited space available for a cloud save. We have however since switched to a better system and I'm working on getting this value saved as well. This too, has to take a back seat over the performance issues, though.
The princess sale price bonus works correctly, though, I have tested this again and again. Every email I got with examples of how the prices didn't increase turned out to be a misunderstanding. Usually the player didn't remember the original price correctly.
You can check your current overall bonus in the Castle, under the button "View Upgrades". The general sale price increase is in the General section. You might also already have completed quests that give you a sale price bonus on certain products. When checking the upgrades for a specific location, for example the Lumberyard, you can see your total sale price bonus for Lumberyard products there. This bonus already includes the general bonus that the princess gives you as well.

Automatically Selling products: Someone suggested the idea to be able to automatically sell products and only set a minimum amount that has to remain in storage. Ironically, this idea was in my original game design, too! We originally had the plan that players could hire a storage manager, who would automatically sell excess products, but keep a certain amount of them in storage. All configurable by the player of course. In the end, we discarded the idea because of the complexity and balancing. It would have blown the game's scope. But I want to say that I still like the general idea of it, and one of my favorite games (Patrician) does it exactly like this.

Please let me know if I missed anybody's question!

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi, as others have reported on this thread I have now experienced several instances where receiving or making phone calls can make automations and boosts run out, also I have found receiving and sending text messages can trigger this as well.
when the issue triggers all automations and boosts run out together early, they just stop and your storage gets filled up in one big gulp with material. this can be handy for quests of course but its not exactly expected behavior, and I don't even understand why its happening given that crafting kingdom has nothing to do with the phone or messages apps. I have also found receiving push notifications from other apps like the bbc news app can cause this to happen, its going to be hard to rtrack down though as I can't find a way to reliably reproduce it.
the sluggishness issues definitely need top priority though as I have found several instances where my phone is getting very warm, then at that point it becomes sluggish and slow in production areas so that sometimes VoiceOver stops talking to me even though its on, and sometimes stopping VoiceOver doesn't help, the worst I have experienced with this issue is when I have been sliding on the screen to try to leave crafting kingdom and the screen has responded but I can't escape the app the device is just frozen.
I find that usually repeatedly sliding on the screen eventually causes some kind of crash and I am able to get out of the app, but either way not fun to deal with, and we really do need large numbers of slots for long quests.
I am sad to say that one tester has already given up playing because of the crashing and sluggishness issues, but it sounded like he had it much worse than I do as he got it everywhere in the game, still its a shame that a blind tester has now given up on the game.
hopefully the issues can be fixed soon so he might start playing again.

By Ornella on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Not a tester but when ever I play that game even though some of the sluggishness of the game is still there it still needs to be taken care of. My hand constantly hurts so I've stopped playing altogether.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

something else I just found that stopped all my boosts and automations was when I powered my phone off and on again, these really don't seem to run reliably at all if small things can stop them running. as before when the boosts and automations were stopped after I restarted my phone I found my storage was magically filled and all automations and boosts expired.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I use the android version of crafting kingdom and I love it. One thing I would like to see is a "sell all merchandise" or what not in the store as normally what I do is wait until my storage is full and sell everything in there. Would this maybe be something that could be feasible?

One idea I have is this. A quest to have 15 slots in the city to gain that button. Thoughts?

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I also have noticed the as someone put it "storage is full" if I either close the game or what not. Not my cup of tea either. I love waiting and often I'll play when I'm editing reports and stuff and I need to take a brake. This has I believe happened on my android device as well. I will not give up on this game. It has come a long way since I started playing it last year.

By Michelle on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi everybody,
thank you all for tirelessly providing feedback and reporting any issues, seriously, I cannot thank you enough.

We've been working on the location screen a lot to get the performance up, and that will be in the next update. I also found an older iPad which happens to also have the bug where a three finger triple tap won't turn on the accessibility. I tried several minutes long, but couldn't get it to work. This is good news, because now I have a device where I can test it on.
Regardless, I will change the game so that the next update will check for VoiceOver running at every game start, and then enable accessibility. The current version doesn't do that, it only checks once the very first time it is started after the first install.

By Sabrina on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

This sounds like a good idea. I am still loving the game and now I know I can save it to cloud save because of the fact that I had to reinstall the game before and had to start over for real. Cloud save is only meant as backup, however, for example if you want to switch device. Does this app work on iPad? I got an iPad last summer but haven’t tried this game on it just yet. Will the app lock in portraait or can I have it in landscape? Nevermind, I think I will stick to iPHone. It feels a little stupid to hold the iPad with folded keyboard and then in portrait mode, so I will stick to my iPhone.

You could show us your appreciation for all of our feedback by offering the download free of charge from the app store. (ornery grin). Thanks for all of your time and work on making a game with loads of replay value.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I don't quite get the point of that comment charles? if its supposed to be a joke I don't get the humor, the app is free to download, and the inapp purchase is definitely worth it, though I still don't get how the developers can make any money if its a one off purchase.

I didn't get the point of humor, either. I know he was kidding but, like Wallis said, The app is free and the upgrade is totally worth it. You can't expect to get everything for free all the time. I know you were joking, Charles, but we don't wanna give that wrong impression to developers, right?
Keep on playing, my friends.

Guys, did you see the word grin in parenthesis? It indicated that the message was in jest. Note that I also thanked her for all of her time and work in making this a great app. How about lightening up and taking messages in the way they are intended, as indicated by the text? Now, just for your responses, I hope your buildings go up in proverbial smoke, and you have to start all over again!!! (really! rotten! grin!!!)

By Justin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I agree with charles. It's in good fun! in any case, I can't wait to see what's in store for the new update. Great work Michelle!

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

grr I didn't realize that a new version came out a month ago, I am still running a beta, this is one weakness of the appstore and testflight if your running a beta the appstore doesn't inform you when a new stable build comes out, and there is no way for developers to notify users over testflight that a stable version has been released. I am running the last released beta version 1.8.0 142, anyone know if this is newer or older than the version on the appstore? as the appstore version doesn't have the 142 number in the version number.

By Bellsfurmama on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I can’t wait for another update. Thanks for all the hard work. :)

I really hope the update fixes the bug that causes slots to malfunction. I really want to be able to have more than fifteen slots again without worrying about the game locking up. Seventy slots would be wonderful for farm production! :)

Oh I love this bug! I can never tell when it will happen until it has started. But I am like a mad person when it does, exiting the game, coming back in, restarting slots and boosts. Please don’t fix it. Lol.

It is quite unpredictable though and I have no idea what causes it. But it’s okay. It makes that long quest take a little less time, even if it just speeds it up by about twenty thousand product.

I am glad there is no automated seller. To me, that is part of the playability.

Michelle, I know you have never commented on this, but I do hope after the bugs are worked out that more product and buildings are added. The possibilities are endless.

Do you have plans to do this? Just curious.

By Michelle on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

In reply to by KE7ZUM

We actually tried adding in a Sell All button that sells everything you have in storage at once.
It turned out to be more trouble than help as soon as you have buildings beyond the farm.
Most of what is in your storage will probably be ingredients for other products. Those will be sold off too and that will stop the production of the more advanced products that need them as ingredients.
This is no problem if you're just doing timber and logs, because they produce very fast. But if you need coal and copper ore to produce copper bars, then it will take several minutes or longer until your production gets going again.

We have to do a little more design and thinking on this, to make that into a functionality that is really useful, rather than hurtful.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I wonder if we really need a sell all button? its not exactly hard to go into the city and sell individual products, and we do have sell all buttons for individual products.
Is there any progress on sorting out the sluggishness in the game when we have high numbers of slots in production areas? I have a quest to sell 2 million food now on the go, and its going to take ages if I can't get my numbers of slots for the workshop above 70 or so. interestingly I have noticed that the game seems to show instability for production areas with different numbers of slots, with the furnace and my 2 million copper I had to sell it began to be unstable at about 60 or so slots, but for the workshop its once I start getting over 70 that it really gets sluggish though before sluggishness starts I know I am getting close to it starting once I have focus issues.
also I think the game needs a compatibility update for iPhone x, as I find it almost impossible to go to my home screen using gestures when in crafting kingdom I can fairly reliably get the app switcher to come up, but never go directly home, and there is also an issue where when I do manage to go home or open the app switcher I don't get the taptic response I get when in other apps instantly the response only happens when I actually touch the screen, so for example if I open the app switcher in any other app you get a response as the switcher opens, but in crafting kingdom that response only triggers once I touch the screen after the app switcher opens.

By DeamonDavid on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi. I hope you could add GameCenter support for the game.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I thought game center support was added. Besides there are not any achievements so I don't really in my humble opinion see a point. We have google cloud support on android but not google play as there are again no achievements. I'm not competing with anyone so for me it works fine.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

For the person that asked if we need a sell all buttonw aht I tend to do is swipe down then right to sell all for each product. This takes about 2 minutes, two minutes I could be spending in my other areas if that makes sence. I do this when I lanch the game to clear out my storage and make that much needed money.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

2 minutes just to sell all your products? how come it takes that long? I can sell everything in seconds, I simply don't see the point in a button to sell everything when individual products have sell all buttons, I think it just adds complexity to the game. I think other features like canceling boosts or shutting down production areas are more important, but top priority is sorting out sluggishness within the production areas. I now have 79 slots in my workshop as I need to make 2 million food, and the sluggishness is so awful that I now have great difficulty restarting my automations in the workshop at all times, and I can't even automate the 79th slot. so I have had to give up adding new slots and am instead spending my gold on expanding storage which isn't a good way of using my gold I know that, but I can't really do anything else which is really annoying as with all this gold coming in I could use it to add more slots to put them towards buying my 5000 automations. I suspect the issue is to do with the accessibility as it happens both with and without VoiceOver, its very slightly better without VoiceOver but not much.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

The reason it takes a while for me is I keep losing focus in the city. I have 12 slots now opened and sometimes I have to double tap, then double tap again as sometimes the first double tap won't take. It might be 45 seconds or what not, however I think a quick way to sell everything in the shop then get out and start the process again would be nice for those of us who want to do it, or a way to sell a range of products, let's say, an auto sell logs, or auto sell logs and stones for 15 minutes or something like that, I dunno. Or it could be a boost. AutoSell x y or z for 25 minutes where it will just sell all the logs or every 50 logs for 25 minutes, Similar to I guess how the money bags thing would work.

By Justin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi,
I concur with KE7ZUM on this. Honestly, I am having the same issues you are. Focus is the real killer here. The whole double tap thing not working is a nightmare, and frustrating.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I agree focus is the issue, though for me I only experience it in production areas when I have very large numbers of slots, but yes once it starts in an area its a total nightmare. I don't experience focus issues in the city though. I suggested an auto sell option for products myself a while back, and I prefer this idea to a manual sell all button for all stored products which I think really isn't needed, but an automatic option to sell product would be really good, as its not fun having to sit and watch the game constantly when its a quest like selling rapidly made products like coal or logs.

I agree with the developer. If you need fishing rods to produce something else, and you sell all, it will slow down your production. Other examples would only magnify my point. A "sell all" button would be very unproductive.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

but a way to automatically sell quickly produced items would be helpful, as your storage space gets filled up stupidly quickly, for example I have a quest to sell 5 million logs, and I start my production running and in less than 5 minutes bang my storage is totally full of logs meaning I can't set automations running then put phone in my pocket and forget about it going about my daily business, it means that because my storage space gets filled so fast even though I have about 300 minutes of automation unless I am sitting watching the game like a hawk most of that time gets wasted because of how quickly storage gets flooded, and I have something like 20 thousand storage. I know I could turn the logs into other items but I don't bother with items if I don't have quests directly relating to them.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I agree. An auto sell at least as a boost or what not woudl be good for those of us who have to sell 50 thousand timber etc, or 25 thousand grane etc. I like the idea that Lex presented.

By Michelle on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi everybody,
We've been working on fixing the performance issues that cause the focus to jump around so much. At the heart of it all, it seems our save and load system has been the reason.
We've completely rewritten it now. As an added bonus, this will improve the cloud save a lot, as well. The princess wasn't properly saved to cloud previously, and was force set to 21 hours when loading a cloud save. With the new system, this will properly save and load.

However,we haven't put it out into beta yet, because we're testing the heck out of it. Because this completely replaces the old load and save system, any bugs would mean that a player's save game might bet lost, broken, even just partially. So naturally, we don't want to take any risks.

I'll keep posting updates here.

By Michelle on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

By the way, I know i haven't yet responded in great detail to the ideas for auto sell options. We're not planning to add that particular feature, but we're not ignoring that the end level quests are too rough with the storage limitations either. We're considering buffing the storage further, to make it cheaper and/or give more storage with each expansion.

However, what really caught my eye was the suggestion of an auto-sell boost. That's something I want to discuss a little further, because I like the idea a whole lot.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

that's great you have discovered the cause of the focus jumping around issue, does this also mean that the performance issue is fixed so that the game will be snappy regardless of if we have 50 slots, 60 or even a hundred or more? I mean is there a number of slots where we can expect to see the game become sluggish again.

By Jessica Brown on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

In reply to by Michelle

Hi. Glad to hear you are making some progress but focus issues and sluggishness when there are a lot of slots has been a problem since long before you implemented cloud save.

By Clare Page on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

You may well be right, Jessica, that the focus issues in Crafting Kingdom were around before cloud save was added to the game, but they certainly seem to have got worse since then. It's true that I have the added problem of playing this game on an older and slower iPhone than some other players, but I'm not dismissing what Michelle told us, there may well be some code added for cloud save which somehow messed up focus. Here's hoping that the next version will improve things! But we must be patient, we don't want a new release rushed out, it's better to wait until it's known for sure whether issues can be fixed.

By Sabrina on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

I still have that problem that sometimes, on for example boosts and selling when I cannot interupt speech at all. So I have to wait through, for example
You earn twenty five thousand gold coins, zero timber remaining and I will have to wait for that wich takes time.

By Sabrina on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Yes it works ofF line but if you have not purchased the unlimited boosts package you will not be able to use boost because you will not be able to watch the videos.

By alex wallis on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi, was just thinking about crafting kingdom and I had a thought, I don't know if this is possible, I believe that third party apps can use siri, so I was wondering about the possibility of controlling crafting kingdom through voice commands, it might make changing production in slots much quicker, imagine being able to invoke siri and tell it to set slot 50 in the lumber yard to produce logs or something like that. changing production in areas is something I find very time consuming especially say if I have 50 or more slots, and I have to change each one, and after changing one slot I get bounced back to the top of the list of slots, with no way to say jump to the bottom of the list with a two finger flick down. I know I can hold my finger on the screen to scroll through slots but its not often easy to control how fast I move through the list etc. so I thought maybe voice control might be a fun way around this, and I haven't scene many games taking advantage of this.
One app I have scene that offers a way for voice commands to be used is blind square gps, but this wouldn't be fun or practical for crafting kingdom I guess as I think with blind square you have to pay for each command used or buy a pack of credits something like that. though I would also really like to see it so that if I change what a slot produces I don't get bounced back to the top of the list automatically when I back out of the slot and that I stay focused on the slot I last interacted with. though actually I think there was a game around a few years back an old interactive fiction game called colossal cave, it took the original game that was around in the 80s or 90s but made it possible to give it voice commands to play the game. I seem to remember it was totally free and you didn't have to pay to play, the game might not be actually called colossal cave on the ap store, and I don't even know if its still available but I am just making the point that this game did offer free voice control.

By Michelle on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Voice Commands are an interesting idea. I gotta be honest, I have always dismissed that in the past, because I didn't think anybody would actually want to use them.

By Nancy on Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 14:27

Hi:
As the subject line says I have built and finished my castle. Does doing the rest of the quests lead to more buildings and things or am I just playing for the fun of it? I can't see the point of contininging to do the quests if nothing is going to happen to my estate; I.e adding other buildings or houses. Thanks.

I hate to contact the dev here, but I and others notice that the latest two updaes broke he accessibility feature on the android side of things. I tried the 3 finger tripple tap and that didn't work. I don't even hear a voice saying to suspend talk back either . I'm running android 8, not sure what others are running Just thought I'd let you know. Thanks and Take care.

Hi I am not sure if this question was on here before or not but I was curious does quest that you were working on do they get carried over to your new game when you reset it just was curious what to do that but I don’t wanna lose the quest and working on
