Accessibility Comments

AppleVis Editorial Team Note: This game is no longer offered in the Lite version. We also make some clight changes to reflect the comments made on this game. Original Poster Note:

I saw this game mentioned elsewhere as being accessible, so thought I would give it a try. Although VoiceOver reads what is on the screen (or at least seems to read everything), it is far from intuitive. To be fair, though, that might in part be due to my total lack of familiarity with this game genre. But, I do think that you would need to spend quite some time familiarizing yourself with the controls and their locations to play this game. Perhaps somebody who is familiar with this genre could comment on the actual playability of the game.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

Some parts of the app are accessible with VoiceOver, but not enough to make it usable.

I have the full version of silversword because i also heard it was fully voiceover accessible. Here's the thing... all info is read but this doesn't help you actually move around the world. yes, you can access the buttons to take you forward, left, right etc. but that's pretty useless if you have no idea where to go. you can spend ages just banging in to a tree or totally missing the things that are along the path. if you stumble on a battle or a quest or whatever, its all readable, but you simpley can not move through the world without vision. There are discussions about this on the developers forums.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on this. I will make the correct changes to reflect that this is no longer offered in the Lite version.

I have tried the free version of this game in the past and found that it was inaccessible. However on the developer's website, their are a number of discussions about working to make it accessible, and see that they have released a new update. Any word on whether the aforementioned problems have been fixed, or whether their are plans to fix them?

I just purchased the game the other day and have sunk loads and loads of hours into it. From my experience it is certainly playable if you're willing to put in some time into figuring out how things work. Basically it plays like a first person dungeon crawler. For those of you who aren't familiar with console RPGs of the type, you move your player facing forward in one of the cardinal directions; u can also turn your character left or right or even step backwards or sideways if u so choose. The forward button will tell u which direction you're facing and what's directly in front of you as well as weather or not a path is passable or not. Left and right buttons will tell you which way you'll face if u turn that way but the only way to see what's around u as far as I can tell is to be facing in a particular direction. Important information will be displayed if u swipe right past all the navigational buttons, for example when you're about to leave the castle, when you're in front of the camp sight that is your starting point, etc. Also, the buttons will be dimmed if you're interacting with someone or something along the way. Combat mechanics aren't that complicated either, just a matter of decision making on your part and watching the battle play out, but it is a little difficult to get an exact play by play of the action being taken on screen during battle, u have to touch the text somewhere on the top of the screen in landscape mode with home button to the right for it to refresh and hear what's going on. maybe it can be fixed by changing the text output options in the settings but I've not played around with that much so not sure. U can see your character's stats and other important information by double tapping on them. If that takes u to a character that u had not intended to look at to begin with, try double tapping on the abreviation of a given character's class. For example: wa for warrior, mo for monk, bar for bard. When you're just playing the game though and swipe to a particular character, you'll see some important numbers next to them signifying their health and some other important stats. Apart from all that, the game encourages exploration so do expect to get lost a lot, even my sighted brother had some trouble with it and I've made it farther than he has. According to him the game doesn't tell him which direction he faces or what lies before him, but VO does provide that information to us so improvements have been made judging by previous accessibility comments here and elsewhere. Mental mapping will help a lot in this instance, basically it will help u along if u can remember or have a general idea of where important landmarks like buildings etc are when u find them. It would help if each map had a written description for them but that's just a small inconvenience in my opinion. Anyway: hope it helps, and I encourage everyone who has always wanted to play a dungeon crawler of this type but haven't been able too because of their lack of sight to give this a try. It's the most accessible game of the type I know of, and it's probably one of the most accessible RPGs available for IOS devices where you have to do the exploring yourself instead of having the game do it for you.

I read on Audiogames.net that Silversword is much more accessible now. The developers added a way for you to doubletap on any square on the map and hear your coordinates so it makes navigation easier. It may be worth looking at this again to see if the rating should be updated.

- added location info if VoiceOver is enabled, you can show it by using the "magic tap" (double tap with two fingers on the screen)
- certain quest items are "NO DROP" now, you can not drop them (still they might be lost if you delete the character carrying them)
- corrected a bug that allowed equipping different kinds of throwing weapons at the same time
- some other minor bug fixes

I have played this multiple times and definitely, the rating for this is quite inaccurate. In my view it should be minor accessibility issues but easy to deal with.

I'm wondering about this one.
The location info seems fine, however I do wonder about the battles and how reviewing messages works, indeed I think a bit more info on this one with the new coordinaates system might be nice sinse there is the potential for an awesome game there.

By Mitchell on Sunday, May 22, 2016 - 04:29

What might help the coordinates system is if the developer added in descriptions for the rooms. Like: "You stand on the west wall of Castle Cranbourgh, looking out over the castle..." So people like me don't get lost. It has potential, it just needs to get there.

My problem isn't the moving. It's the objectives. And what and where I should go next.

By swordsmasher on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 - 04:29

Perhaps there the objective button can tell us that we should go to barrix for train or something like that.
