iOS 18 Beta Comprehensive Bugs/Accessibility Issues Thread

Apple Beta Releases

So with the developer beta of iOS 18 now out, I thought I would start this topic yet again, to create, one, centralized place to discuss bugs and accessibility issues with iOS 18.
I would encourage those who are able to test on their devices to try and recreate issues reported here, to report issues of their own, as well as to file reports about issues they're able to reproduce to supplement the reports of others in the community.
With that said, I will post an issue I've located in the comment below and we'll go from there.

Options

Your Feedback is Important to Improving Accessibility on Apple platforms

Don't assume that Apple is aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference - submitting bug reports directly to the company helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. Your report may provide crucial information. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority they give to fixing the bug.

If you're using a beta version, use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you're using a public release, follow the instructions on this page.

When setting up my wife's iPad some years ago, I seem to rember a toggled featujre that mmakes the iPad gto to sleep when the cover is closed. Have you checked in settings under power or whatever it's called to see if there is such a toggle?

By Ollie on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

It's under display in settings. This is a good point. It's called wake, or something like that. Turning that off might stop your iPad from snoozing.

English: Any new voices for Italian?
Italian: Ci sono nuove voci per l'italiano?

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

According to Apple's documentation,

Use Siri even when iPad is covered or facing down: Turn on Always Listen for ā€œHey Siri.ā€

That's all. No additional mojo required. With this item selected, SIRI should hear me, even with the lid closed and the iPad locked.

By Levi Gobin on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

For anyone who wants to create a personal voice in iOS 18 for use with voiceover, I found a bug when recording some phrases and wanting to listen back to them. I donā€™t remember this before when I tried it in the iOS 17 beta cycle, but you have to wait a full second, maybe a little bit less after hearing the beep to start recording. During my most recent recording sessions, I would hear the beep and immediately start talking, so that parts of the phrases were cut off at the very beginning. I was already into recording number 100 something before I realize this, so I have to re-record them again when I get a chance.

Reacting to a message in messages doesnā€™t show any reactions. Was able to react with the laughing reaction, but there was no feedback as to what I was pressing

By Hannes on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

hi all i only have two voices available, that of my primary language, trying to access speech to add more crashes settings, has anyone experienced this?

By Ollie on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I can't find an always listen setting in my siri settings on iPad. There is siri when screen is locked, but I'd imagine that is something different as, though I might want it when the screen is off by pressing the button, say, I'd not want it on all the time when trying to interact with other devices. Maybe it's not in the beta yet?

By danno5 on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I know iPad is designed to mute Facetime calls if you close the case, so I'm just wondering if what your iPad is doing is now turning off the mic when you're closing the case.
As stated above, it could be due to the device going off when the screen is covered, or to stop it going mad with other devices, but I also know that the mute mic is a feature of iPad, so yes, your iPad may now be doing that?
Honestly, I could be completely wrong, it could as easily be a bug as it could a change, just thought I'd chuck in my suggestion.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Thanks everyone. Just to recap, this has nothing to do with the iPad being locked, or asleep, which I believe is a synonym. My iPad is wide awake and responds to keyboard interactions. There is a setting that will cause SIRI to always listen, and I've enabled it, and SIRI still doesn't respond when the case is closed. I have always kept my iPad in a case, so if SIRI had behaved this way in previous releases, I would've remembered that.

Anyhow, it's in Apple's hands now.

  1. Go to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Commands, Touch Gestures.
  2. Select three-finger single tap (for example).
  3. The Commands popup opens. This is a list of commands to assign to the gesture, organized by heading.
  4. Use the rotor to select heading.
  5. Repeatedly flick down with one finger.

Expected behavior: I should be able to flick through the headings of all ten command categories.

Observed behavior: The first flick down takes me to Interaction, and the second to Basic Navigation. The third flick down should take me to Text Navigation. Instead, VoiceOver reports, Heading Not Found.

Workaround: Four-finger single tap at the bottom of the screen, then flick up with one finger. This allows me to browse all category headings in reverse order. It should work the same starting at the top of the screen and flicking down, but it does not.

  1. Open Photos. VoiceOver focus lands on Toggle Sidebar Button.
  2. One-finger swipe right (or VO+Right Arrow with BT keyboard). Focus moves to Search, Profile, Photos, and (in my case) 14 Items.
  3. One-finger swipe right(or VO+Right Arrow) again.

Expected behavior: VoiceOver focus should move to the next item, presumably the first photo or video of my 14 items.

Observed behavior: VoiceOver focus jumps back to the first control, the Toggle Sidebar Button at the top.

The incorrect navigation behavior is intermittent, Navigating through the controls a second time will produce different results. There doesnā€™t seem to be a reliable or logical way to navigate through the controls.

  1. Open any app, such as Settings.
  2. Touch the top of the screen to place VoiceOver focus in the status bar. VoiceOver announces several available operations, including, ā€œSwipe up with three fingers to reveal the Control Center.ā€
  3. Perform three-finger swipe up gesture.

Expected result: Control Center should open.

Observed behavior: Control Center does not open. VoiceOver focus remains in the status bar.

Notes: While viewing the home page and focus in the status bar, three-finger swipe up works as expected and opens the control center. Furthermore, three-finger swipe down always opens the notification center, whether viewing the home page or an app.

The problem isn't limited to three-finger swipe down. With a BT keyboard, Option+Down Arrow also fails to open the control center in this same situation.

By Brian on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hey Paul,

For those of you beta testing with a newer iPhone model; does the single finger swipe down from the left or right edge of the screen to access the notification center and control center gestures still work as intended?

Just curious. :)

By Joshua on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Settings, control center and allow access to control center within apps

Make sure this is on

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hey Brian. I'm on a 2021 11-inch iPad Pro. If I drag down with one finger from the upper right corner, it works just the same as if I drag down with one finger from the top center. Namely, it opens the control center.

And, similar to my feedback report above (in which focus is in the status bar), this one-finger pull down gesture only opens control center while on a home page, not while using any app.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Thanks Joshua. Doh!

Still, While using an app, if I put VO focus in the status bar, VO should not tell me about a gesture to open control center that isn't going to work because I disallowed it in Settings. I updated the feedback report to include this.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hey Brian. I notice a slight difference between swipe down from top center versus swipe down from top corner.

Swipe down from top center lets me open control center at the second tone and notification center at the third.

Swipe down from top corner only opens control center at the second tone. There is no third tone, and continuing to swipe down after the second tone reverts back to acting like a normal finger drag.

Is this the behavior you're looking for?

By Joshua on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hi
I just tried swiping down from the left, middle and right top edges of the screen and every time it works as it should
Device is iPad 9 running iPadOS 18 beta 1

By Brian on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

So the brief time I owned an iPhone 15 Pro, I had the ability (in iOS 17.x) to swipe downward with one finger from the top left or top right edge of the screen. If I did this I would get a little haptic feedback, and upon letting go, would have access to the Notification Center.

Furthermore, if I did the same gesture, but went down slightly further, I would get more haptics, and upon releasing my finger, would have access to Control Center.

I was basically asking if this is working in iOS 18, but alas, I completely missed the part where you are on an iPad, and I have not touched an iPad since the Air 2. šŸ˜³

By Renita Rogers on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Is it just me, or is the journal app missing in the beta? I'm running it on an iPad 6gen. I've looked on all three pages of the home screen, including my app folders I created. Do i have to redownload it from the app store?

By Renita Rogers on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Wow, I could have sworn I opened the journal app on my iPad. Maybe I am a ll crazy, lol.

By Joshua on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I havenā€™t figgered out what causes this, I just reported it in feedback and said it happens when listening to music but I stoped the music and it still does it, moastly does it when listening to music

By Dennis Long on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I've noticed it. I've also had it stop and had to restart vo. I reported it. I suspect it will be fixed quickly.

By Joshua on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

We will see

Probly gonna be fixed for a bit then come back out of nowhere but like I said we will see

By Levi Gobin on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Ever since iOS 17, if Siri starts talking, then you talk over her, or a loud noise which the phone thinks as speech happens, she will stop talking and sometimes not show the results. There is now an option inside of settings, Accessibility, then Siri, which says: Require ā€œSiriā€ for Interruptions.
It is described like this:
When this is on, you have to say ā€œSiriā€ or ā€œHey Siriā€ to interrupt a Siri response.
This should make Siri only listen for back to back requests when her name is heard. This should hopefully fix a lot of issues with back to back requests.
Hope this helps.

Have the voiceover cutting out bug a lot on my iPhone, not as much on the iPad although it is still present.
At times, I've noticed that at the same time, voiceover cuts out, existing audio that is playing can also cut out, be it a podcast, video or music.
I'm sure that there is 100% a bug where VO cuts out, I'm not trying to say that doesn't exist for a second, because it does also happen when no media is playing.
My theory is that there is also a bug in the iOS audio framework that will need to be fixed too. But we'll see how it all goes as we progress through the beta cycle.

By TheBllindGuy07 on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Is also present in Sequoia as far as I know, like when typing very quickly voiceover voice will overlaps itself so I can hear 2 letters at the same time, or a slow decline in quality and usability of all audio signal until I restart VO. Is it that on ios?

By danno5 on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I have had it when typing on iOS. But I'm also getting it throughout the OS. It's not just with the keyboard.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

When rearranging either app icons or home pages, I'm not sure the icon or home page is being dropped in the right place.

To reproduce:
1. Flick up on an app icon and select edit.
2. Double tap the page indicator above the dock to rearrange home pages.
3. Flick up on your last home page and select it for dragging.
4. Flick up on your first home page and select drop after page 1.

Unless I'm mistaken, my last page is dropped before my first page, not after it. Though it's a little hard to know for certain, as the page numbering in iOS 18 is pretty wonky. It seems like the same problem appears with app icons, that if I drop my Settings icon after my Calendar icon, for example, I end up with Settings before my Calendar icon.

But, before I report this ... is anyone seeing similar behavior?

By Brian on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I've been waiting for this since the release of iOS 17. Glad to hear it is, or will be, in the public release of iOS 18. šŸ˜…

By Maciek W on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Yes, unfortunately I confirm the occurrence of this bug on my iPhone as well. This is really frustrating as I have grown to love these tapbacks. Also I'm only able to add a laughter reaction. I also reported this to Apple yesterday and hope it'll be fixed as soon as possible!

By Gar on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hi,
I'm not having this issue on my iPhone 15 Pro. If I swipe left or right from the home page, it identifies all three pages (widgets, page 1, page 2) correctly.
I tried to create a third page by moving an app there, and after doing so my phone still behaved as expected.

By Gar on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hi,
Using a one finger swipe down both in any app and on the home screen, as well as tapping the status bar and swiping up with three fingers in both cases, the control center invokes itself properly on my iPhone. I wonder if it's an iPadOS specific bug.

By Gar on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

I've tried to reproduce this and it seems to work normally for me. I was able to drag pages around into any order.
That said, I experienced the issue with apps not ending up where they're supposed to in iOS 17 very frequently, but haven't so far.

By Gar on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

When I enter the control center and double tap on bluetooth, iOS brings up a menu with several unlabeled buttons. None of them seem to do anything, as far as I can tell.
Can anyone confirm this?

By Falco on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 16:10

Hello,

In the first beta of iOS 18 running on my iPhone 13 I can't cycle between two keyboard layouts. Normally there is a button on the left side of the on-screen keyboard to choose between keyboards styles like azerty and qwerty.
Regards

By Gar on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

Hi all,
For those experiencing issues with choppy voiceover speech, I've found that restarting voiceover may not always clear the problem. However, apparently changing voices does. In my case, I switch from Alex to Eloquence Reed (US version) when speech starts to get choppy. After that, it clears up and starts working as normal. When it starts to happen again, I switch back to Alex.
I'm curious if this works for anyone else, and if it does, and you've reported the issue, I'd suggest amending it to your report.
Cheers

By DrummerGuy on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

I just turned VoiceOver off and on and that seems to solve the issue for a while. As soon as it happens again, I turn VoiceOver off and turned it back on and I'm good for some timeI just turned VoiceOver off and on and that seems to solve the issue for a while. As soon as it happens again, I turn VoiceOver off and turned it back on and I'm good for sometime. I hope this issue is solved in the next update.

By Ollie on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

Oddly not really getting the voiceover issue on my iPad. I've downgraded my phone for now as needed reliability and the voice going quiet at an inopertune moment is exactly what would have happened whilst I was on the move.

I wonder what differences there are between devices.

Fingers crossed for an update next week.

By danno5 on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

Hi Ollie,
Yeah, I'm not really seeing it on my iPad either, on the 15 pro max it is happening quite a bit more, but if I'm being completely honest, its the only bug I'm actually experienceing.
Oh look, speech died on me while typing, what perfect timeing haha

By Ollie on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

The other bug I was getting on my 15 pro was the inability to switch between brail screen input and the new brail screen commander, I think it's called. You have to use a three finger swipe. Again, this works fine on my iPad, but not on the phone. I've, of course, put the bug report in.

By Lielle ben simon on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

I had installed the beta on my iPhone 14 Pro.
Try to do flick left with 3 fingers.
VoiceOver say ā€œcommand modeā€, or ā€œBraille entry modeā€.
When Iā€™ve set my phone to Hebrew VoiceOver doesnā€™t worked and got stocked.
When Iā€™ve set to English itā€™s start as usual.

By David7o4g5 on Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 16:10

So what is interesting is that I noticed since Friday, June 14 VoiceOver on my iPhone XR, iPad seven, has been crashing a lot ever since I upgraded to the beta 18 number one.
Anywhere I go or anywhere I click on when VoiceOver is started to read a sentence or paragraph it was starting to automatically crash the more I keep pushing VoiceOver to that same line. It will keep crashing into eventually when it gets to the point it will reset to Samantha and I had to go all the way back to accessibility and select Samantha reselect the voice that I had turn off VoiceOver and then turn it back on.
And itā€™s been an issue for the past almost 9 days from now. Well not anymore since itā€™s already Monday so itā€™s been 10 days already since then.
Not to mention no when I click on send an abs or certain objects on certain section buttons on Settings or anywhere else that clicking performance would take a while to respond on like 17 and all the updates they look like automatically quickly however, in this case, it would just click slowly, and the swiping is very terrible and very unstable.
And to put a top of that even if I do swipe slow, Iā€™m trying to speed up a tiny bit then it was slow to get unstable how I donā€™t even know I could barely use the VoiceOver on my iPad, on the iPhone is not too bad.
But still is kind of not that good for me not to mention, or there was a bug that to the pronunciation or not really but the voice example for each Siri voices sounds a little bit stuttering all about a key similar to the situation that iPad nine got from iOS 17.1 was funny is that in the first time when I download it the better it showed the small file size of Siri but was more weird after certain amount of time they changed it back to 400 and 3 hundred MB, but whatā€™s funny is that the voice examples stills remains to that old small file size Siri, which is kind of weird as well, so no clue what will happen from here. Iā€™m just gonna wait and see when will iOS 18 DB one will bring.
And finally, I hoping they will bring back that will not really, but Iā€™m just hoping they will fix a Siri crashing when you ask for a request question or anything else like that, because, I like to read three web content search that Siri adjusted based on my questions, sometimes it will crash, and sometimes it doesnā€™t matter the time it will crash, so Iā€™m just hoping they will fix that because thatā€™s been an issue since 17.4 honestly since beta two.

This is beta 1 Macrumors says beta 2 will be out today.
