Accessibility Comments

AppleVis Editor's Note: the Usability Rating has been amended to reflect the comments that indicate the map may cause problems for VoiceOver users.

Original Comments: i was very impressed with the level of accessibility of this game. The only feature I had difficulty using was the map, and i did figure out a way to locate castles on it. As for upgrading buildings, there is a button at the top labeled "Castle Buildings", double tap that, and then you'll be presented with a list of buildings (e.g., wood store, library, quarry, tavern, etc). If you have enough resources to upgrade, then you can double tap the upgrade button next to each building. If not, the button will be dimmed. If you tap on the name of the building, you'll enter the dail view which will give you more info about what the building does, how much resources it will cost to upgrade, and other specific options according to that building (e.g., you'll be presented with a list of missions you can perform in tavern, or research you can do in the library). i'm just starting out, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to comment and i will do my best to answer them.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

greetings, this game looks rather good. is there a way of firstly knowing how long a particular task has left? secondly, what about the map? how can you tell the distants between you and the target? thirdly, i've been trying to work out the faq but it's not in english. any ideas on this?
If you double tap on the profile tab and then go into game options, you can set notifications and you'll be notified when tasks such as building upgrades are complete. But, you can also check the status of building upgrades in the castle buildings view. If there's no "buildings in progress" heading, then all your upgrades are completed. As far as missions and battles, you can check the progress of missions in the tavern, but you'll also receive a report which you can access in the messages tab. I thought the FAQ was in English, but for some reason, VO is reading it using the Portugese voice. Maybe it really is in Portugese. i can always write to the developer and ask them to fix this. i am going to anyway just to let them know how impressed I am with the accessibility of this game, and I hope they don't break anything. As for castles and distance, i'm honestly not sure, but when you tap on a castle, either yours or someone else's, you can copy the castle link, which will paste the coordinates of the castle to your clipboard. I would advise all new members to join an alliance, as they can offer protection, send you resources, and give you advice.

I've been playing with this app, and so far it seems mostly accessible. However, I can't seem to get my lumberjack upgraded. I did the wood overtime in the tavern, and when I click the upgrade, it plays a sound that seems to indicate construction, but it has still said upgrade level 1 for a while now. What am I missing?

Hey Tangela, Here's what I found on the support site about building cues. ****** All building upgrades, researches and unit recruitments in a castle are sorted in a queue and finished one after another. Every single task added to a queue will be started after all previous tasks are finished. The time displayed in the queue is to be understood as the time until the task is finished, not as the actual time the task takes to finish. In every castle there are three different queues: One for troops and carts, one for building upgrades and one for researches. While the single tasks can't be aborted and can't be moved up and down in the queue, it is advised to start the tasks in the desired order. ******** When you tried to upgrade, did you notice the resources required for that upgrade had been deducted? I just tried to upgrade one of my buildings, heard the sound, but then received a server error so I had to do it again. If the resources weren't deducted for the upgrade, perhaps it didn't go through for some reason.

i love this game. although i haven't figured out the market and the keep yet so if anybody has and can tell me how they work exactly i'd be greatful. i know what they do i just haven't figured out how they work.
The thing with upgrading the lumberjack is, I can find the lumberjacking tap. But I'm not seeing is the hammer icon I'm supposed to tap. So yes, I get the sound alright, but there's no hammer to tap at least not that I can see.
hi ken, no click on castle buildings. then look at the various buildings. there will be an upgrade button next to each building. if the button is dimmed then you don't have the resources to upgrade it.
As usually happens to me, I found this out about two or three minutes after I posted my comment. I'm in my first mission right now. Also, I looked at the FAQ. It was in English, and voiceover didn't have any problem reading it with the right voice. I wonder what's going on with that. Finally, I heard some people say that the map is not accessible. I haven't had any problems, and I can find the castles that are around mine

By Nicolai Svendsen on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

This is why I like Xyrality. Just with Celtic Tribes, their newest game, Lords and Knights works. I wonder if their Crazy Tribes game also works well. I've also found them very responsive when it comes to accessibility, and they even highlight VoiceOver improvements but not necessarily specifics. You can really pass a lot of time with these games, and the realtime aspect of games like these makes it easy to get reset if you don't pay attention! :D
Hi Daz, if you tap on the button that says market, you'll be taken to the detailed view where there's an explanation of what the market does, and it'll show how many resources you need to upgrade to the next level. You'll also hear animal sounds. If you keep swiping past all this, you'll be able to trade resources for other resources. So say you've got a ton of wood but not much ore, you can trade wood for ore. You'll need to use soldiers and/or carts depending on how much the transport will bring back, and it does take a few hours to get your resources. The keep is where you exchange resources for silver or copper. you can also buy gold coins here, though you have to pay real money for those, and it isn't necessary to use them in the game. Starting out, the exchange rate for silver is ridiculous (90 wood = 1 silver), so if you upgrade the keep, the exchange rate will lower. Silver is used when you want to attack other castles. Copper is used when you want to spy on other castles. Hth

i started playing Celtic Tribes last night, and since i knew what i was doing this time around, I didn't squander my resources trying to figure out how to upgrade buildings. So i'm in much better shape over there. lol i know you can play the Xyrality games on the web, too. i haven't tried to do this, though, and i wonder if it's accessible? Also, i'm not sure how to send players messages, unless I have the coordinates to their castle and find them that way. i'd link up with those of you who are playing. :)

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

ok so whoever can contact the app developers needs to get in contact with them because there are specific icons that you can use for the map which you need in order to use it properly. but a related map question, how can you explore the area? you can see so much on the map by doing 3 finger swiping but beyond that it just says x amount of fields. any way to expand your knowledge of that area?

I have made an alliance specifically for blind people. Let's unite and show everyone how we play our games when they are accessible! l+k://alliance?18758&52 How to use this link is beyond me, but as far as I know there's only one other alliance formed at the moment anyway.
Hello everybody, it looks like the Celtic tribe game has a huge accessibility flaw. There's no way to see where to place artifacts. Since patterns are essential, we need to see those sockets.
when using the map for example, you can copy a castle link, paste it into a message or alliance forum and if you double tap that link it will take you straight there. but as for finding a player a specific player i don't know. if you can post your specific coords then we can find each other. the map is a few hundred thousand fields large so you wouldn't want to be swiping around all day to look for stuff.

In reply to by daz

Which icons? i haven't had any trouble accessing castles on the map. I've raded a few free castles in my area for supplies.
Cool, i have no idea how to find it. lol But I'm about to try to play the game on the web, and that might be a bit easier. There are lots of alliances forms...well, ok, 9 that i know of. Most are marked with symbolsm so if yousee a player or castle with symbols around their name (e.g., my castle's name says "tidal wave, crescent-shaped moon FunnyFarm Crescent-shaped moon, tidal wave". These markings are used to tell other players that a player or castle belongs to an alliance, though if you tap on the name and get a detailed view, you'll find that out anyway. :)
I didn't have any trouble inserting the artifact into the slot when I did the tutorial on Celtic Tribes. I'm not sure I remember how I did it though. I could always go and clear the slot and try again. There only seems to be one slot available right now to put an artifact in for me.

well this is what i'm told by the people in the alliance i'm in currantly. a helpful bunch actually. they're teaching me a whole lot. you can 3 finger swipe around to move you to other places on the map. but i also know there's icons that vo can't see at least this is what am led to believe.

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by Adrenalyn

yeah how do you do that? i mean is there a keyboard thing you can use to put graphics round? for example mine is double swords and skulls but am having real difficulty pasting them in. they're good with that but i'd like to do it anyway if i could for obvious reasons.
You have at least four artifacts, and Darleese four slots to put them in. I know because I turned off voice over and poked around until I found them. On my artifacts are in use right now. The problem is, sister not in any kind of pattern, I can't get any magical bonuses on them.

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

not by my choice i tried to be clever and the site messed it up completely. so my new name on there is lord lord asriel and i can be found at x16633 y16278. so find me on the map and invite me to your alliance.
OMG, trying to find you on the map was a very daunting task. i'm very far away from you. I'm going to contact the dev through the app store, since that's the only way I know how, and suggest that: 1. they make the map more usable with voiceover, and 2. they make it easier for players to contact one another. i should be able to put you name into the message system and send you a message, at least. None of this gallavanting around the map.
No, Daz, I haven't found you. i was just 3-finger scrolling but that moves the map pretty slowly, and sometimes i end up at coordinates way off base. *sigh* if there's an easier way, I don't know of it. My coordinates are 15986,16221&42 As for putting the symboms around your name, i use the emogy keyboard on the iPhone. It has all kinds of cool symbols and emoticons. if you don't have it, you have to go to settings>general>keyboards and download it.

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

greetings, well under my new name i've managed to find my old alliance again. i downloaded the imagy keyboard but it hasn't got the simbles that they use for their uniform as it were. what's the easiest way to cut copy and paste? is there a way of doing it using the apple keybord? if so then could someone tell me how this can be achieved?

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

so i decided to give it a go just to see how it worked. well certainly with wineyes on a windows pc it's not accessible what so ever. so am wondering if it's worth while contacting the developers asking them to make the web version more accessible? or has this already been done?
Hi Daz, I don't own an apple keyboard, but i'm pretty sure the commands would be the same as on the mac. So you would press shift+left or right arrows to select, and command C to copy. Command V will paste. Hope this works. :) Oh, I just thought of something else. What world are you playing on? I didn't even come close to finding you, but if we're playing on two different servers, we'd never find one another. i'm on UK3.
i have the emogy keyboard. It's divided into different categories, people, object, nature, and then there's around 10 different screens of emogies you can pick from each one. I'm having lots of fun with it. I've had it for a while but haven't really used it much until i started playing this game.
So Daz, You said you were in a helpful alliance. Which one? This whole coordinates system is too slow even wit VoiceOver turned off and swiping the map. I even zoomed as far out as I could and now have lots of castles showing up but can't tell whose is where and so on. I was willing to try since people hunting would be just as slow as hanging out waiting for wood but I can't even figure out my own coordinates... Of well...
ok firstly how do you zoom in and out i had no idea you could do that. secondly as coords, when you move the map around with vo the coords that you're focusing on are spoken automatically. the alliance i'm a member of is called new world order. ken you do realise that you can double tap on a castle? in there you can see who owns it, if they are part of an alliance, if they are in newbie protection etc.

By Ken Downey on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by daz

First of all, consume out, you turn off voice over and pinch your fingers together like when you select text. Just imagine that you're squeezing the map… That's the best way to describe it. To zoom back in, just spread the map out by putting your fingers on the screen close together and moving away from each other. As far as court Metsko, I'm not sure. When they do the three finger swipe, I guess Something like 16,000, 15,000… But when I look at the castle, it says something like 255, 265… A bit confusing. Will you ask New World order to give me an invite?
hi ken, who are you in lords and nights? are you on austrailia 3 server? that's where we are.

By brandon armstrong on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by daz

hi all, I have twoquestions. first, how can i invite players to an alliance, and second, how can i join an alliance if someone invites me? I can't see an invite to join an alliance even though someone sent me one.
hi brandan, what you do is this. if you have been invited to an alliance, click on the alliance tab along the bottom. as well as giving you the option of making your own alliance you will also see the alliance you've been invited to join. so click on accept invitation. as for sending people invites, if you are in an alliance you need to have invite rights. if you don't have invite rights then you can't send invites.
the problem with alliances is that when your in the page for the alliance you have created, if you want to do anything like edit or view the rights, voiceover doesn't change when double tapping this. it just says things like selected rights, or selected deplomoisy.
it does the same thing when you for example copy a castle link to the clipboard but it does do it. so bring someone into the alliance and play with the settings and see if they are affected.

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

so has anybody else had experiences with their own alliance? what have you found. the developers seem to put access there for vo users so if it's not accessible for some reason has anybody who has had trouble with alliances contacted the developers?

By Adrenalyn on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by daz

I haven't created my own alliance yet. I want to get some more experience before I attempt that. Besides, I like my alliance, they're a group of fun and helpful people. :) If you go to your profile and double tap on the rankings button, you can search for players. But I think you can only find the players who are on the same server as you, because I tried looking for you, Daz, and now i know you and I are on different servers. Anyway, if anyone is on the UK3 server and wants to look me up, I'm Ezria. Likewise, in Celtic Tribes on USA1 i'm Aphria (a p h r i a).

By falcon wings on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

I have been playing this for a while now, although I messed up a bit by not using my silver properly while attacking oweing to me not knowing what I was doing. and I even quitte the tutorial when I didn't want to. =( besides those things, I have been enjoying it a lot,and I am on the uk3 server for anyone that wants to look me up. silver is dam hard to get,though.... so far everything works, only those castle links provided at places doesn't. like in a message, for example. I wonder if I can restart? oh and if anyone who is able to read the faq because I am not able to,could you paste the dam thing here or if too big email me or something? yes, I did choose AU english in the language rowter while reading it. the questions seem to be in english, but the answers aren't. 1. You can click on links to players, castles etc in messages by touch exploring the screen till you have the link under your finger. Then double tap and hold to get the option to open it. 2. If you explore the map by 3finger flicks the map often needs a bit of time for loading. So if you get a result like 6 fields or so you could go back to the previous map screen, click on a random castle, use the scroub gesture to close this page and go to the desired map screen again. For me this almost works. I play this game since April on German server 9 and I love it. It is 99,9% accessible and the usability is great. The only thing I havn't tried yet are the functions if you have certain rights in an alliance. Currently I have 10 castles and I am a member of a top ten alliance. Be carefully, this game can be very addictive. :-)

By daz on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by Per

ah, i was wondering about the 3 fields etc. so it's a case of giving the game time to load then? for silver i think you need 1000 silver to take over any given castle whether it's a free one or player owned.

By Adrenalyn on Monday, June 24, 2013 - 04:15

In reply to by Per

Thanks for the tips, Per. I'll send another email to the developer and let them know player, alliance and castle links do work. I was finding them on the screen, and then turning vo off and tapping on the link.

hi again all, am wanting to contact the developers of this game to request a few things to do with accessibility. most notably the ability to play this game through a browser should you wish to. not that i mind playing on the iPad or iPhone but there are times when am on my pc and i'd prefer to play it on the pc. in addition, i know you can do things with the map that can show you your allies and enemies near to you but these abilities aren't yet accessible with voiceover. so i wish to contact the developers with regards to this. or if anybody else has, have you had any posative responses from them? please feed back here. many thanks all.
