Accessibility Comments

AppleVis Editor's Note: the Usability Rating has been amended to reflect the comments that indicate the map may cause problems for VoiceOver users.

Original Comments: i was very impressed with the level of accessibility of this game. The only feature I had difficulty using was the map, and i did figure out a way to locate castles on it. As for upgrading buildings, there is a button at the top labeled "Castle Buildings", double tap that, and then you'll be presented with a list of buildings (e.g., wood store, library, quarry, tavern, etc). If you have enough resources to upgrade, then you can double tap the upgrade button next to each building. If not, the button will be dimmed. If you tap on the name of the building, you'll enter the dail view which will give you more info about what the building does, how much resources it will cost to upgrade, and other specific options according to that building (e.g., you'll be presented with a list of missions you can perform in tavern, or research you can do in the library). i'm just starting out, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to comment and i will do my best to answer them.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Hi Daz, The email address to contact the developer is info@xyrality.com. i contacted them with suggestions last week, and received an email back within a few days informing me that my suggestions had been passed onto the game designers. i, too, would like to ability to play through the web. Perhaps they could implement a simplified HTML version with little or no graphics. As for copying and pasting, use shift and your arrow keys to select, and command, or alt, C to copy, and command V to paste. i don't think you can cut or copy text that isn't in and edit field, though.

Hi everyone, Thanks Adrenalyne for posting about these games. I am always looking for new good text games to play. I started playing all 3 (celtic/crazy tribes and lords) last night and they are pretty addictive and similar. I personally prefer crazy tribes because of the post apocalypse setting. I wonder though, i just raided a free castle and the second time i did not get any supplies, i guess it needs time to refill, i found the map cumbersome if i wanted to look for other targets further away and i also wodner how this will work if you invade a castle. You then become the owner and you have to begin again with upgrading all of its buildings? If you have a few of those that would entail quite a bit of cumbersome map use. Also for raiding targets if ound it a bit difficult, is there then a way to get beck to the location on the map that your village or castle is located at? Within crazy tribes i updated my tavern to level 2 to get more missions. I need more soldiers but also knockers does anyone know what those are? I am impressed with the localization of the game serverwise and languagewise!

I like Crazy Tribes too, and I can't wait until they implement sound and music for the game.

Hi guys, I am so excited. I just entered an alliance in lords and knights. Well a few things we mihgt suggest to the dev: Not total reliance on the map to get things done in game: for example include a user search functionality where you can either enter a user name or id or filter users who are nearby, in the seem clan etc etc. This would then also work for sending messages, either utilize the general search or allow messages to be send to userid. Secondly allow to click on user links in forum posts or in attack reports etc so that you can directly attack or interact (send goods messages) with them from there and no need to use the map for htat. I would love to send things to the dev but i think it would be good if we coordinate this so that they get everything from one person in a constructive conscise way Greetings, Anouk

By anouk85 on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi guys, maybe we\ d better move this to the ios games forums? I am also looking forward to when they add sounds and music to crazy tribes. I have the music disabled in the other games but love the sfx. I wonder if they will be adding the daily missions to crazy and lords as well? I find that myd evelopment on lords is the slowest till now. I can only do one mission at tavern level 1. Have you guys also noticed this. Well, one question i know has been asked before but i just got invited (!) and joined an alliance but tey ask me to have their insignia in my profile. I have no idea how i can find their insignia and how i can change my profile however. Apparently even their clanname is unpronouncable to voiceover... Any help would be appreciated. Greetings, Anouk,

By anouk85 on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi again, a few more questions for the more experienced players. How do you get the precise coordinates of your village? I see some coordinates on the map but i would not be sure if that would be the ones of my village. Can i see them in my profile or select my village and copy them? I dont relish having to type them out so pasting htem would be greatly helpful. Also, has someone figured out how you can send someone a dm? And now a bit worried, but no question, i wonder how helpful you can be as a vo user to your clan. I have no ideahow i can find people who are not close to me on the map so sending help or defenses would not be that easy. Has anyone already got experience with this? Thanks! Greetings, Anouk,

By anouk85 on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi again, Sorry for posting so much but i thought that after you loose your newbie grace it would be essential for others to be able to see that you belong to an alliance. Am I wrong that they only can see this if you put it in the title? Vo wont speak the title of my alliance on the phone, so i thought i might copy the alliance link and paste it in a webbroser on my pc. But when i copy the link and paste it in mail this is what i get: +k://alliance?16929&7%20 This is for the lords and knights game on nl1 server. How can i read this link, if at all? Thanks, Greetings, Anouk,
I really think you should be the one to contact the developer. I think all your questions are valid, and I don't know the answer to any of them.
to copy an alliance or castle or report link: using touch screen: if you are in a castle then all you need to do is to find the option where it says copy castle or alliance link and double tap it. it will automatically put it on your clipboard. then go to the area and paste. to paste use the roter to find edit. then 1 finger flick i believe the term is until you hear the option paste. double tap this and your selected link will be pasted. to do this from within a message or forum post. move your finger to the desired link. double tap and hold until options pop up asking you whether you want to open the link or copy it. make your selection of choice in the normal way.
hi all, ok so i've just written to the developer. what i have written is below. if people want to send their own messages and add to what i have already written then go ahead. Greetings, Firstly I’d like to say just how much I am enjoying this game. It’s brilliant. I’m well and truly addicted to it. keep up the good work. I’m also a blind person so I use voiceover on apple devices to play this game and equally I would like to say thank you for including accessibility in with this game. It’s working well. It’s with accessibility in mind that I am writing to you. Well partly at any rate. I am wondering if there’s a way to make the map a little easier to use? Firstly, when you move the map around, voiceover tells you what coordinates you are focused on but there’s no actual way to read that information again once voiceover has spoken it. I don’t know if the invirmation is visible or not but assuming that it is, could it be made visible? Secondly, again sticking with the map, could we have the ability to for example, type in coordinates somewhere so a player could simply focus on a particular point without having to either tap on a link or scroll the map? Obviously keep those options there they are definitely useful it just adds a bit more usability to the map. I have also found out through my alliance that I’m in, there are buttons on the map that aren’t yet visible to voiceover. I think these buttons give more tactical information. Could these buttons be made visible to voiceover? Moving away from the map, could the browser version of the game be made accessible? I have tried playing the browser version and it is not playable currently by a blind person at all. please could this be changed? A non accessibility request to do with the map. as you know, you can play this game across multiple devices. Yet those multiple devices whilst logged into the same account, they don’t store for example, the last viewed point on the map. Could this be changed so it’s synchronised across devices? Some other non accessibility requests now. I’ve read somewhere that you are going to bring in new features into the game, will this include geographical features like rivers, sea, mountains that sort of thing? That would add quite a bit to the game certainly in terms of tactics. Also what about additional weapon types like cannans? I assume you’re going to keep this completely medieval so you won’t be including tech advances such as aircraft etc? whilst that sounds fun I think that would create a few problems. Many thanks for reading this and I do hope that my suggestions can be taken into consideration and some implemented. Many thanks.

By anouk85 on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi daz, copying a link is no problem. I have type2phone on my mac. But when i paste it in a mail message there is no real link so i cant view it online. Also, is it true that you can only look at the different clans once you have an invite, and thenyou can check the other ones throught he ranking list? It would be cool if you can look at the different clans even if you are not a member yet, but i have not found how i can do this, if at all possible. It would be nice if you could appl to a clan yourself. I am in a top 10 clan in crazy but not yet in aclan in lords or celtic. Greetings, Anouk,

By anouk85 on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi Guys, I just got a mesage from someone in lords who wants to invite me into his clan. He has not send an actual invite request. I do assume i can lookup the clan he belongs to if i pull up hiw profile though i still have to test that. It would be so much more convenient though if the username that sends you a msg would contain a link so that you could immediately go to the persons profile from the message contents instead of having to look it up in your own profile. Or, do you guys have better success with this/ Less typing on an iphone is always good. I will have to think about putting the suggestions in a logical conscice order and then i can mail the evelopers in a few days. Greetings, Anouk,

By Adrenalyn on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 17:45

Hi Anouk, If you double tap on the name of the player who sent you the message, you will be able to view his profile. From there, you can see what alliance he is in and can double tap on that to get more info. You don't get invites to alliances in the messages area, they show up on the aalliance tab.

Hi all, Either I have a really great alliance or all the alliances our like this, but I noticed that when a person asks for support to help them keep or take back Castles, everybody jumps on it.h I said to myself, why don't I ask for support of a different kind… So I wrote my alliance and ask them to try playing LordsKnights with voice over turned on, and Two write to the developer also I told them all the issues that I have. Now, I can't wait to see what they have to say. Meantime, I suggested everybody right to their alliance, asking the same kinds of things.
greetings, well am still loving this game. am part of fearless on austrailia 3. they are a good bunch of folks. but here's a question to all you voiceover users out there. basically i got castles in multiple places on the map. but my ultimate goal is to have castles between 2 points. i can visualise what i want in my mind but how to get to those places on the map. i haven't quite worked out which way is north south etc with the 3 finger swipes and also how the coordinates correspond to the directions. if anybody has figured this out then please let me know. also i knowe somewhere on the map that there is a button that voiceover can't see but i know it's there because it's been talked about, the button makes the map topagraphical. has anybody found a way of making this work? a lot of my alliance members favour using this method for various things.

This game is great. I've always wanted to play something like World of Warcraft, and i think this is as close to that as I've ever been. A few questions: Has anyone found shortcuts or easier ways to use the map? Also, I was just invited to a couple of alliances, and i'm wondering if any of you had any problems interacting with the group. I'm just worried I won't be able to find the people who need help protecting their castles, or that I won't respond as fast as others in the game. I've only been playing for one day, so maybe these concerns are completely unfounded, but any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.

By Andromache on Friday, February 21, 2014 - 17:45

Tried out the game but can't read the FAQ. Seems to not be in English. Would have thought that'd be fixed by now. It's not my kind of thing. There are some similar elements to Solara, but this leans more toward resource management, and I never enjoyed games like Oregon Trail, for example. Also, just making sure, but PVP is forced, isn't it? It's not like you can opt out, like with Solara? Also, it seems to be time-sensitive, and that's a lot of pressure on a blind person, IMO. But the music and sounds are great and the app is very accessible. The map is a pain, though. Scrolling is far too slow and tasks take too long. Solara's that way, too, but at least projects can be started immediately when you start building. It's not a queue system where it does one job at a time.

From what I could tell in Lords and Knights, you can tap your name and get a summary of the castles you own. You can highlight one and presumably administer it easily that way.
This game keeps crashing every few minutes, is anyone else experiencing the same thing? Or is it just me? Same thing with celtic tribes.

By CrazyEyez on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

It keeps crashing for me as well. Has anyone contacted the developer?

By Jen on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

These games are crashing for me too. I was under the impression it was just these apps, but the same thing has happened in a few others lately. So I'm beginning to believe it's an IOS bug, instead of something about these apps in particular.

By Nolly on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

It's not IOS but the app working together with the voice over system. You are fine if you don't use the left/right swipe gesture or the three finger vertical swipe (in certain screens) and slide around the screen, but a lot of the things you need to access are further down the page. It will happen when certain actions are being carried out and within certain tabs/links. It always happens when you recruit troops and enter the arsenal then try to swipe left or right, you have troops on the move or in a battle and try to swipe left or right while in the units tab,, you have troops recruiting and try to enter the market and swipe left or right, you enter the keep while while recruiting is active, so forth and so on. I think it has to do with an active counter that isn't upgrade related such as recruiting, troop movements etc.. I wouldn't really call this a minor issue but a major issue because attacking and defending are key components to the game and if you can't access it regularly, it is extremely hard to succeed. It's so bad that I have to plan accordingly when I want to recruit or send out troops, in fact there are times I give up completely for a time because the game is just unplayable due to constant crashing. The only reason I've stuck with it is it's something new for me, but I can see my limit approaching quickly in frustration with the crashing. The game itself is great but I wouldn't recommend this to a voice over user purely on it's instability.

By Snarfette on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

Can anybody tell me how to get silver, and do you need silver to fight an empty castle? The crashing of the app is very annoying though. Did anybody contact the developers yet on fixing that problem? Thanks for all the help.

By Snarfette on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

Also, does anybody know where I can find a tutorial on how to play this app? It's a bit confusing right now that I just started the game. Thanks again.

By Nolly on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

Silver is needed to capture a castle. Don't use your silver if you are just trying to attack to take resources from a free castle. It is obtained through the Keep via trade of Ore, Stone or wood. Upgrading the Keep gives you a higher silver and copper maximum as well as making the exchange rate better. Tutorials are scattered about the net, but finding one that explains how to get started is rare. I will try to list a few starter notes. Resources should be your first thing to upgrade, making sure to keep the maximum capacity (Store) upgraded in par with the production to maximize what you recieve while you sleep. For example if you sleep for 10 hours and your production is 45 per hour, you will want a maximum capacity of at least 4,500 just to ensure that nothing is wasted. The Library has things to increase attack and defense, increase resource production as well as creating necessary components to recruit troops, but it progressively gets very expensive to upgrade the library itself, so be mindful. The Farm upgrades basically increase how many people you have available which is needed to upgrade everything or recruit troops. If you don't upgrade this enough you will find yourself stuck with resources but the inability to upgrade since you will be waiting on the next farm upgrade to gain subjects to be of use. Fortifications is self explanitory and increases the defense of your defending units. The keep is used to trade resources for copper (Used for spying) and silver (Used for capturing castles). Upgrading this will increase exchange rates and maximum values of your coffers. The Arsenal is self explanitory as well, this is where you recruit troops to either attack, defend or do missions in the Tavern. Upgrading the Arsenal reduces the amount of time needed to recruit each new recruit. The Market is where you can exchange resources for other resources, but the exchange rate at first is horrible and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Upgrading this gains you the ability to gain Ox carts (used to transport resources/silver)as well as improving the exchange rate. The Tavern is where you can send your troops out to gain extra resources. What missions are available increase by upgrading the Tavern itself. Each mission has requirements such as a certain number of troops, certain types of troops and/or resources to carry the mission out successfully. You are immune to attack or attacking other players for two weeks when you start, so this is why I recommend upgrading resources first, then work your way on to the rest, making sure to avoid things that won't be used till later. You can also send out troops to attack a free castle to procure resources, how long it takes depends on how fast your troops can move as well as the distance from your castle. To check this click on the troop to get a description of their attack, defense, carrying capacity as well as movement speed. There is much more to learn but most of it is hands on experience. There are a few guides but I can't really recommend any of the ones I found. Unfortunately there are accessibility issues with this app that I don't ever see being addressed, the most major is the crashing issue which I stated in an earlier post. I now discovered that the crash also extends to the forums when you join an alliance. This one is totally random but just as annoying and very, very frequent. I would go as far to say the forums are almost totally inaccessible to us, or at least it is to me. I'm dreading the first time I get attacked because I fear I won't be able to get into the units pane without it crashing. If and when this happens I will most likely throw in the towel, which is a shame as for the most part I like this game itself. The opinions are of course my own and should only be taken as such. Try out the game as you will never know if you will like or dislike something just by reading one persons experience.

I tried sending out troops to a free castle twice now, and I cant determine whether I succeeded in raiding it or not. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a step by step on how to raid a free castle, and how can I check whether I did it or not. Is there a way to find out what items I acquired from my raid. I'm saying raid, but the button says attack, are those the same thing? Thank you very much for your post above, and thanks for your help in advance.

By Nolly on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:45

Yes there is a way to check but due to crashing issues you will have to be very patient. I don't believe you can fail raiding (attacking) a freecastle, or at least I haven't yet. First send off your troops to a free castle. I think you only need to send as many as the maximum they can raid, which is around 80 of each resource as far as I can tell because 80 of each is the maximum I have ever gained from a single raid even when my troops could carry much more. The time that is necessary is displayed before you deploy your troops, so make a mental note of this. The time needed to make a full circle is double the time needed plus the time needed to fight the battle. You can check the movements of your troops as well as the time remaining under the units button/tab, but this is where it gets tricky, or least it does for me. After a list of your defending troops is current troop movements and/or missions. When your troops are returning you can click on the moving troop and somewhere near the bottom will list what all your soldiers are carrying back from the raid. The castle works similarly to your own and resources need time to stock up, so if you attack the same castle too soon the rewards will be less. The tricky part of course is the game constantly and religiously crasheing when I try to click on the units pane when I have troops on the move. Perhaps you will have better luck, but this is the only way I've have been able to see what my troops took from other castles. There are other things you need to know when attacking another castle. The type of troop you send out will affect how long it will take to arrive and return from your target. Those on horseback can make the trip much faster than those on foot. The castles you can observe in the map view are not all those around you. To broaden your view you must turn off voice over and pinch (inward) the screen then turn voice over back on. This zooms out and will have a much greater viewing surface. Picture a large chess board where swiping left and right will move around but when you come to an edge it will go to the first or last castle of the row above or below, depending on if you swiped left or right. Think of how Jaws reads a screen and you will get the idea. I've edited this to note there is a crash work around as well as another way to check what your troops were able to gain from an attack. Go to messages > Reports . There you will find reports on everything you have done that is of importance, including spy reports.

By Nolly on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

The crash work around now longer works. Tried contacting the developer but it is so ridiculously hard to get in contact with anyone I gave up.

By Snarfette on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

Hello, can anybody tell me how to upgrade to the long bow? I studied on the library once, and now I can't study again. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

By Snarfette on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

A couple more questions, can somebody tell me how to get more subjects? I'm running out very quickly lol. Also, when I raided a castle and looked at the transport report to see how many resources I acquired, it said I got 70 oars, but when I looked at the summary of my resources it only said I had 55. Where did the rest of my oars go? I did not upgrade or traded anything in between checking the two lists. Another question, cis there a way you can see what's in a castle before you choose to raid it? Can somebody help?

By Jen on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

The way to acquire more subjects is to upgrade your farm. Subjects are automatically added to your castle every time the farm is upgraded. Gaining more subjects may also help you at the library, because researches require subjects. So it's possible that the reason you can't study is just because you don't have enough subjects. If that isn't the reason, you just may not have enough resources to study whatever it is that you're trying to study. Just keep upgrading buildings, recruiting troops, and eventually you'll have enough resources. As for raiding castles, a good indicator of how many resources are in each one is the number of points it has. The high point values indicate a castle with a lot more resources, but that also means it's a castle that is likely to be much more strongly defended.

By Snarfette on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

Thanks Jen for the help. Is that the only way you can gain subjects? I believe I am on World USA 6, is there any blind alliances that might want a novice as a member?

By Nolly on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

You can check the resources of a free castle by sending a spy. Once it returns you can read the report if it was successful in it's mission. It takes some time but this is a way to see what is available before attacking a free castle. I've found an alliance on U.S. 6 that is fine with my blindness. They are really helpful, but The only issue is I can't read the alliance forums because it constantly crashes and I am struggling because the crashing is extremely bad when trying to send resources to my second castle. If it wasn't for the crashing we would have no problem. Anyone found a solution yet? I thought I had found one but it was only temporary and crashes just as much as it did before, if not more since I took another castle.
Upgrading the farm is the only way to gain more subjects, but you gain a lot of them for each upgrade.
The latest update to the app said that all the VoiceOver crashes were fixed. I've played since then, and had no crashes at all. This update just happened Monday or Tuesday, so it's very new, but it should fix all the problems.

By Snarfette on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

Yes, I also think the update fixed the crashing issue because I I haven't crashed since the update. What is the name of the blind alliance and how can I join them please? Thanks again.

By Nolly on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

The alliance isn't an alliance run by blind people but are aware of my condition and are perfectly okay with it. The alliance I am currently in is Resolution (Training alliance) and I believe the main one is Resolute. What is your X/Y location? The update did indeed fix the crashing issues. I've been stress testing the app and so far no crashes. I nearly did cartwheels when I saw that voice over crashes was fixed in the update notes.

Hello, I'm trying to get the flaming arrows. It says that it requires a weapon smith to get it, but I can't seem to find the button to get it. I have all the resources needed to get it, and I've read the description for it. I've tap on everything possible to try and find the button to no avail. This is happening to several items as well like the swordsSmith and others. Can anybody point me to the direction I need to be in? Thanks in advance to all the help I can get.

update. my nick name is my game center name marrie125 if you want to find me on there.

Take care and will let you know how I get on.

In reply to by Nolly

How do you search for alliances? I'm quite new to this game and have only had it for 1 day. I wish I could name my castle a lot better then marrie125 but ah well this works and works quite well. My nick name is marrie if you want to try and find me. I don't really know where to find myself on the map as that part is not yet totally accessible and it is to me very confusing.

Take care to all.

By Jen on Monday, April 21, 2014 - 17:45

If you go into the keep, you can rename your castle to anything you want. There's an edit box at the bottom of the page, and you just type in the castle name, and hit "done." That's all there is to it. Normally, you won't have to search for alliances. A lot of the big ones will invite you when they see new players on the map. I can't remember how to search for alliances, but maybe someone else can tell you how to do that.

Ah I'll just have to wait. I'm still protected for 13 more days or there a bouts so I'm jus spending time upgrading and trying to max out my resources so they will better serve me.

Btw if you want to find my castle it's the same name as in solara, that being the castle of power. Not sure of the case but yeah.

Oh, one more question I tried to read the faq on the help page just to see what I could learn so I would not bug the site that much, except it looks like it's in a different language. is there an english page some ware I can read, This is under the profile tab I believe.

Thanks to all who have given very good tips. the game just rocks. I know I have already said that, but I can't quit saying it.

I am not sure I understand the last post answering my question. It seems to me that the last post is suggesting that I have to level up my library to get the things I am wanting to do. I do not understand this because I have all the resources necessary and for example flaming arrows button is not dimmed, I just can not find a button to aquire them. Also to get swordsman I have to have a swordsmith. Again the button is not dimmed and I have the resources needed but can not find a button to aquire it. If you have to be a certain level to aquire things, is there a list somewhere that I might be able to get? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for the reply. The top left button on my screen says Castle building display list view. After double tapping on that button, I went to check if I can find the button to upgrade for the flaming arrows. Under the flaming arrows, it says that it requires a weapon smith. I have all the resources needed to get the weapon smith, but there is no button to acquire it. What am I doing wrong? Can somebody show me a step by step instructions please. This game looks very fun to play, but it's frustrating when you can't play it properly. Please help, I'm about to give up on this game.

Actually for me I find the graphical view wesier to navigate as the list view keeps refreshing and the app slows to a crawl. The app acts much faster this way in the graphical view, go figure. lol!
