For it's newness, I think this app is well worth the price. As the developers have stated, there are still bugs and things that I hope they improve mainly the amount of time it takes for fleksy to load. To me, it's inexcusable for an app to take over a minute to load if it is in your app list available for switching. I know that IOS puts some apps in memory in suspension mode, but if you don't open up the Fleksy app for several hours and have opened other apps before you want to launch Fleksy, you have to wait for the app to load. This is pretty counterproductive especially if you want to dash off a quick text after you've been multitasking with three or four other applications. As I said though, I'm sure things will improve and I look forward to Fleksy's future.

I don't agree with moving the comments regarding pricing to another forum. This has given us some useful discussion points, namely, why are the blind being robbed yet again.. Telling people to "stop whining" and "get over it" isn't helpful or useful, it is offensive in the extreme quite frankly. The app is overpriced for what it is, end of story. It is a glorified t9 system that doesn't work properly, has a terrible TTS and clunky interface design, is overly sensitive to taps, has a terrible start up time and should never have been released in it's current state. Of course, yet again, the blindness hype machine brings this app to godlike status. To expect people to pay £10 in the UK is completely insane. I understand that it is a specialist app, but I am also getting rather tired of being taxed because I can't see, having to be grateful to every single indy developer that decides to solve issues that aren't there such as typing on a touchscreen with a glorified autocorrect system that is flaky at best. To be fair, I think, I understand what the developer is trying to do. I suspect that braille input would perhaps have been a better way to go, but if those who are using it are getting on with it, the expression a fool and his money are soon parted. Yes, that also includes me in this case. To finish, although I have come across harsh here, somebody has to be reasonable. There is only so much taxing of disability we should put up with. We spend a disproportionate amount of funds on technology and accessible devices and this app is one such trying to prove the rule that the blind will buy whatever is thrown at them. Either way, i'll certainly not be buying from these developers again. I hope the updates come thick and fast to improve it, but we've heard this all before. Basically, Fleksy is yet again, another blindness specific app that is overpriced and in my view at least, under delivers. I'm certainly never buying a specialist app for the visually impaired at Fleksy's price ever again, not unless it is uniformly proven to be worth it.

I didn't say this discussion shouldn't have happened, but I think this entry is not a good place for it to have happened. This is the app description page and not a forum to discuss whether the blind are ripped of by developers of blindness apps. Anyone looking for technical info on how well the app actually performs will have to wade through all these opinions on pricing, which makes finding the info you want more time consuming than necessary.

It would be quite difficult to prune posts now, as it would break up the discussion that has taken place and the result could be quite disjointed.

Of course, many posts talk about both the functionality of the app and its pricing.

Some might argue that it is impossible to discuss the merits of Fleksy without reference to its price.

However, for those who are keen to discuss the pricing in general of apps that are specifically for blind users, Michael has recently posted a blog on this very topic. You all might want to share your views there.

I'd like to hear about your typing technique on the Iphone using this ap. Thumbs, typing each letter by touching with one finger, both hands? I use my pointer finger currently without the ap. I'm just interested to know how others type so quickly as I've heard on the podcasts.

I type faster than ever on my IPhone 4S with Fleksy. Can't wait for further updates. Most of the negative comments are from those who apparently haven't even read the description of the app or they wouldn't be making statements about not being able to send, texts, emails or tweets from the app itself. Read before you bash please!

I can't speak for anyone else who's commented on this obviously, but seems like it'd be worth posting to clarify why emailing directly from Fleksy doesn't get used much here. Unless I'm missing something, you can only use the in-built email form to create new messages. Of course I'm happy that the developers have added that functionality, but in my case, the vast majority of emails I send from my iPhone are replies that can't wait until I'm back at a computer. There isn't a way so far as I can tell to reply to messages that are already in your inbox or some other folder, so you can't quote the message that you're replying too, and unless you're extremely careful with the subject field, your mails won't be correctly grouped by thread either. Aside from that, the app adds a "Typed using Fleksy" sig to every email, which is a big turn off for me and seemed most unusual for a paid app. The sig can't be disabled at the moment, although when I wrote to the developers and asked for that option to be added, I got a quick and friendly reply assuring me that it had been added to their list of things to do. Texting from within the app seems more likely in my case, but aside from checking that it works, I haven't yet had to send an SMS lengthy enough to make the trade off of loading time and locating the person in my contacts worth it. That's not intended as a bash point, it's simply about productivity which, after all, is the name of the game for this app. If your mileage varies then that's great news!

Having said that, I've just noticed that when I wrote to the Fleksy team, the chap who replied was quoting previous emails perfectly and he was also rocking the "Typed with Fleksy" signiture too. I guess that means that either I'm dumb and this can already be done, or it's an upcoming feature. Either way, it's good news.

This app has sure generated some discussion. I've got Fleksy myself, and quite enjoy it. However, I do find it a little time consuming to switch from app to app to enter text, etc, but I'm willing to put in the extra effort, because I think about technology several years ago, and how different it was. I really don't have any complaints. Whether this will be a revolutionary product or not is yet to be seen. I believe it has a lot of potential, and I'm interested to see how this app wil evolve over time as the iOS system evolves.

What's New in Version 1.1 Welcome to a new release of Fleksy - with many very exciting changes following feedback from our users. Here's what's new: Fleksy is now free to try! The free version will not allow you to use the text, but will give everyone the full Fleksy typing experience. If you have already purchased the full version previously, you will automatically be upgraded to the full version. You no longer have to switch VoiceOver off to type. Please note, you have to first tap once anywhere on the screen before typing, in order to activate the keyboard. This is the way Direct Touch works. When you launch Fleksy, it is now already in typing mode. You can use the keyboard area to type. To bring up the Fleksy menu, press and hold at the top of the screen, above the keyboard area. We have re-ordered the app menus based on popular feedback. You can now remove words from the dictionary. You remove words the same way you add them: type them in manual entry mode, and then, after swiping right, swipe up to remove from the dictionary. I've been trying this out for the past day or so and I like it overall especially how easy the input system is. I can use the iphone one handed and type a message if I wanted to like the old Nokia phones. Just some feedback re some improvements I'd like to see: Adding a word manually to the dictionary seems a bit flakey at times though. I have to touch and hold a screen twice sometimes before it will start reading the letters and I can then start moving my finger around the keyboard. It also seems to sometimes insert the wrong characters when it shouldn't be doing for example I may put my finger on the letter S and then move it to where A should be but it still inserts S. I have to try multiple times before I input the right word.

I bought Fleksy a few months ago and was very impressed; the recent upgrade is even better. I got up to reading the first 31 comments and gave up; the amount of whingers is quite sad; not to mention the people who asked questions that were already answered in the comments; These people will talk down about the app when they don't even know how to use it. The ability to be able to send texts directly from the app really impressed me, not to mention having the option to copy it to the clipboard for any other app. -- Well done guys; I can get messages out heaps faster as I'm not a quick typer on the phone without speed dots I admit.

I'd had the trial version for around two weeks or so, and I finally decided to upgrade. One feature I'd like to see is the apostrophe move to the basic punctuation list. The apostrophe-s is there, but not just the plain apostrophe. It would make writing words such as how've a lot easier. Fleksy seems to have a lot of trouble with that one. Other than that, I'm liking the app a lot. Thanks, Shersey

You will have to add that particular example to the Fleksy dictionary. It's not technically a proper conjunction. I say it all the time but have never written it so I Googled it just to make sure. I added it to the dictionary and it picks it up great every time! What's funny is that it is in the IOS dictionary.

Every time I've tried, however, I get the sound you get when there is no more text to delete. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, as I've added other words to the dictionary. I write the word manually, being sure to include the apostrophe, then swipe right. Fleksy then tries to correct my word. Then I swipe up and get that sound. I'm pretty sure that this happens--but I don't have my phone in front of me to be exactly correct. I'll post back later, as my phone is currently being used as an audiobook player for my fiance who's sleeping. Thanks, Shersey

When sending a text message using Fleksy, why does it add the words reply and then my phone number at the end of the message? It is a bit confusing for the person recieveing the message.

Hello Neo,

This is intended functionality and a setting you can adjust. We call them Reply links and are useful when communicating often with other Fleksy users.

Navigate to Settings and then Fleksy. There are two fields that read "Your email address" and "Your phone number". You can populate these fields with your info, and from your description, I understand you already have done so.

When you do this, Fleksy will add that short link at the bottom of your emails and SMS messages. When the recipient of your message is also a Fleksy user, they can click the link from within their Messages app to initiate Fleksy and reply to you.

You can remove the links by deleting your info from those two fields, and leaving them empty. They are very convenient if you have Fleksy friends, though. We know because we use them all the time when communicating with each other here at Fleksy HQ.

Oh i wish i had more Fleksy friends so i could try clicking on the reply and wear my number is to see how it would work. I have some friends that I told them about fleksy but unfortunately they don't really like putting there number there because they don't think it's convenient. Now that I've read that I really want to try out with someone.

I use fleksy whenever I have to right something long. When I simply jot down a text message, I don't fire up fleksy. Two of my sighted friends like Fleksy too, and with the new option to turn off speech, I will definitely request they try it out.

Thanks for the clarification to do with reply links. I was thinking the phone number and email fields in the settings menu were so fleksy could add your contact details to its dictionary.

This involves you typing the word manually, then flicking right. Fleksy will repeat what you've written, then you flick up. This will add the word to the dictionary. Note: If you have already added a word, manually writing it, then flicking right then up will remove the word from Fleksy's dictionary. In that case, just flick down, then up again to readd the word. The feature I would like to see is a "replace this with this" type of thing, wherein you can type words with apostrophes, such as how've. You would basically type howve, then Fleksy would correct it to how've. I'm not quite sure how you could accomplish this, but it would be nice. Either that or add the apostrophe to the basic punctuation list. Other than that, Fleksy is a great app! Thanks, Shersey

Currently, Fleksy does not learn from user habits. That said, we are constantly evovling our algorithms and this may change in the near future.

Agree about the apostrophe being added to the punctuation list. I do find using the keyboard to manually enter a word quite tricky sometimes and v slow. It doesn't seem as sensative as the in built IOS keyboard.

To type an apostrophe, you'll need to type it manually. It's located above the letter U. You'll find the colon symbol, and simply flick down till you get to the apostrophe. HTH

I encountered some quirky behavior the first time that I ran version 1.3 - after typing I tapped on the top part of the screen to access the menu. This was duly displayed, but behaved as if VoiceOver was not enabled.

Toggling VoiceOver off and then back on again via a triple-click of the Home button got things back working as you expect them to be.

The app now seems to be working correctly, even after several restarts of the phone and closing via the App Switcher.

Very odd, and I only mention it here in case anybody else encounters the same thing.

I believe this is a bug with either fleksy or IOS, I wrote to them about it and they say they are looking at it, but they think it might be an issue with IOS that only apple can fix.

Only I usually just copy text from Fleksy or send it to my favorites. Either way, the keyboard popping up after selecting either of these options from the menu happens occasionally. If it is an issue on Apple's end, I hope they get things resolved. :) Thanks, Shersey

I've had the same problem which annoyed me and now I wish that was the only problem I was having. Today I noticed that the entire app would freeze when I would touch the top of the screen to try and get a menu. My whole phone has been jerky and slow since iOS 6 but I didn't notice it after a few days but now that Fleksy is being effected drastically I'm really upset. It was not useable today, even after restarting the app. I reset my phone last night but I don't see how that would have anything to do with it. I'm beginning to think I need to restore the phone. Other apps being broken I can live with but not Fleksy, how dare the stupid iOS update mess with Fleksy haha. I hope no one else starts to experience it this bad. I've got an iPhone 4. Oh yeah, I was in touch with the developers and heard the same iOS being the problem. I don't doubt they'd be fixing it if they could. They should get developers of the year.

Like I said earlier, I do sometimes have the issue of the keyboard popping back up, but I don't think I've ever had the app respond slowly, even with iOS 6. At least, not while typing. The one thing I will mention is that Fleksy now says something about "Message service." when directly texting someone from within the app. I don't know what this is, but it does make texting slower. I'm not sure what it's doing, but it takes a couple more seconds for Fleksy to respond now when texting. So maybe I am experienceing slowness, after all! Lol. Anyhow, nothing about a "Message service" ever came up before, so I do think it's someting Apple implimented. It's either called "Message service" or "Message view" or something. Which reminds me, I sent a text using Vokul today, and I had to press send even after telling Vokul I wanted to send the message. Maybe the two things are related. Annoying, Apple. Thanks, Shersey

That reminds me of two other things that happened yesterday, after it locked up, I heard no VO so hit the home key and then went back to Fleksy. It had called up an export dictionary email. What??? And then another time it ended up in instructions. I have no idea what's going on. I think my phone has gremlins and I must restore.

Before you restore, try going into Fleksy, turninv Voiceover off and back on and see if that fixes your problem.

I've tried that and everything else I can think of as well as tips from the Fleksy folks. Doing the restore now. The whole phone is buggy, not just fleksy. But Fleksy being so badly effected is the final straw.

I think restoring is a good idea, especially since you mentioned that your phone has been buggy overall. The only real annoying thing that I have noticed with iOS 6 (and it might not be iOS 6), is that whenever I return to the home screen, VoiceOver will sometimes take a while to respond to touches/flicks on the screen. It's like while the phone is receiving input, VoiceOver doesn't register that it is, and then after I've touched/flicked a few times, the phone catches up with itself and VoiceOver starts spitting back voice/sounds to say what I've done when it wasn't responding. I hope that makes sense. I try to have no more than 3-4 apps running at a time, and this didn't happen in iOS 5. That's what makes me think it's iOS 6. By the way, I'm using an iPhone 4 here. Anyhow, getting back to Fleksy. I think a restore is a good idea, Ro. Hope things go better for you after restoring. Thanks, Shersey

Good afternoon everyone and the Fleksy team. First of all I just want to say that using this amazing app has really enhanced my typing on the iPhone. I know that we don't have it built into ios yet but I'm quite happy copying and pasting text from it to other applications. My questions are as followed.. There is just one command I'm not getting and that's the menu command for Facebook twitter etc. What I am doing is placing two fingers on the screen when I'm finished typing. However, I don't know if it's a bug or not at times when I do the menu command, it doesn't work and I them end up adding some more text which I them have to delete and try again. Sometimes it will work but at others I have to repeat the procedure. I have also tried giving it a few seconds and I'm not sure is this works or not. So the question is how can I do the menu command correctly is I'm not doing it right?. The second question is there a mailing list at all for this app?. I look forward to hearing from everyone. Hi to all and to the Fleksy team too. I got an iphone 5 for christmas and installed and downloaded, installed and brought this app and I must say that it has really inhanced my typing on the iPhone! Quite honestly, I use it all the time and I understand that it isn't directly hooked into Apple's IOS but maybe one day. At any rate, I really enjoy using the copy/paste feature plus the ability to post to FB Twitter etc. I have just two questions that I would like to know the answers too if they can be answered 1. This relates to bringing up the menu for FB Twitter etc. I don't know if its me that I'm not performing the gesture right or its a bug but when I perform this gesture, I find that it doesn't always bring up the menu. I will end up typing a few more letters and then I have to go back and delete them and try again. Sometimes I will have to do this twice before the menu comes up. The way I am doing the gesture is I put two fingers on the screen my index and middle fingers of my left hand and hold them there until I hear the sound. I try to aim at the middle of the screen or slightly higher but still in the middle. I hope this makes sence and please let me know if I am doing the gesture right. 2. The second question is simply is there a mailing list for Fleksy at all. Where one can subscribe and ask/answer questions. If anyone could help me out then that would be truely grateful. Can't say about the mailing list, but when you are typing and want to access the Fleksy menus, you tap with one finger on the top half of the screen and hold until you hear feedback.

For the first question, if you just use only your one index finger and hold, the menu should pop up. For your second question, Flexy can be followed by on Twitter.

Hello to everyone and too the Fleksy team. One thing I discovered which was by accident was that when you find the period located to the top left of the additional symbols, when I arrowed down I noticed it said .com enchanted, I continued flicking down and noticed others e.g. .net I don't know if this has been left out or if its because Fleksy was created in another country but in this list I didn't see .co.uk because I live in the UK, I would like to request that this be added in a Fleksy update. It would save time typing this in manually and I'm sure others will agree be a welcome addition to the growing list of website endings. Thank you for reading and I look forward to your feedback.
