iOS 18 Beta Comprehensive Bugs/Accessibility Issues Thread

Apple Beta Releases

So with the developer beta of iOS 18 now out, I thought I would start this topic yet again, to create, one, centralized place to discuss bugs and accessibility issues with iOS 18.
I would encourage those who are able to test on their devices to try and recreate issues reported here, to report issues of their own, as well as to file reports about issues they're able to reproduce to supplement the reports of others in the community.
With that said, I will post an issue I've located in the comment below and we'll go from there.

Options

Your Feedback is Important to Improving Accessibility on Apple platforms

Don't assume that Apple is aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference - submitting bug reports directly to the company helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. Your report may provide crucial information. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority they give to fixing the bug.

If you're using a beta version, use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you're using a public release, follow the instructions on this page.

FB13822529 (Voiceover can't properly swipe to notifications within the notification centre from the activity ring widget)
When swiping right in the notification centre from the activity widget, I am unable to get to my list of notifications. Meanwhile, if I swipe left from the first notification in the list, I'm able to get to the widget without issue. My notification centre displays the time at the top, and the activity ring below it. To reproduce, enable voiceover, then swipe down from the top of the screen to the notification centre. Tap the time, and swipe right. You will move to the activity ring. From there, swipe right again. While voiceover should move without issue to the first notification in the list, it makes the bong sound indicating it can't go any further.

FB13822914 (The back button is not recognized by voiceover when one is in the primary voice selection screen)
TL:DR: When navigating through the list of voiceover voices in settings, voiceover fails to see the back button to return to the previous screen. With voiceover enabled: Step 1: Open the settings app. Step 2: Navigate to voiceover>voices>select primary voice. Step 3: Touch the top left corner to bring voiceover focus to where the back button should be. Expected result: Voiceover should identify the back button and speak it out as such. Actual result: Voiceover only identifies and reads the header at the top of the screen. Swiping left or right, and using a four finger single tap at the botton of the screen and swiping left, fails to locate the back button.

I realize this is not a solution necessarily, but what about the scrub gesture? Does that at least work here?

By Gar on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Brian,
The scrub gesture does work in this scenario, fortunately.

By Devin on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Just a heads up, the microsoft Seeing-AI app no longer automatically detects text after updating to iOS 18, I've restored the phone, reinstalled the app and no luck. The light meter works so it obviously still has camera app permissions but some bug has been introduced.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I use my iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard. Rather than pick up the iPad to unlock with face ID, I normally just enter the passcode via the keyboard. The bug is that you must disable quick nav first. Never had to do that with iPadOS 17.

I have not submitted this to Apple yet. Too busy with everything going on today.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Yeah... I couldn't figure that one out either. How is it supposed to work? Are you supposed to just be able to drag the icon to any row/collun on the screen, whereas before it had to either go in a folder, or snap right to the direct right of the last icon, unless of corse the column was full, at which point it would force to the far left of the next row underneath?

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Note by the way: I, too, have enough vision to see and manually drag the icons around. Granted, it's a pain in the posterior to do, but I can if I must, but even still, I can't get it to work without Voiceover either.

By Kushal Solanki on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I do love the new voiceover tutorial I think Apple needed to introduce this a while back but good on them for introducing the tutorial now.

By lukemartin on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Everytime I click a volume button a black overlay pops out until i release

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Maybe I'm confused, but I thought it was supposed to bring up some sort of a visual on the screen showing what the volume was doing. Hasn't it always done that? I apologize if I'm misunderstanding.

By Joshua on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Vo stops speaking randomly

By Kushal Solanki on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Wondering if this is a bug or not.
So Whenever I try to change the roter language or as it is called voices as soon as I change it it defaults back to the actions roter.
This is particularly happening on the home screen.
Is this normal behaviour or is this a bug?

By Joshua on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

This is normal but you can turn it off if you dont like it

Vo settings>roter>change roter with item

By Gar on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I was able to get this to work no problem. All I had to do was double tap and hold on an app icon. I was placed into edit mode and as I drag my finger around the screen, voiceover announces the row/column I'm in. This allows me to drop an icon anywhere, which I did by placing the Developer app in the last row/column available. Exploring by touch, I was able to confirm the app went where I wanted to.

By Gar on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I haven't experienced this, even if I don't move focus to another item.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

You know, I also saw that bug where Voiceover would just all of a sudden quit working. Not sure if this is an Eloquence thing, or if the other user is using another voice than that, but yeah, I thought maybe my phone was just doing something weird, but I guess not after all if you can reproduce it. I had to actually tripple click my side button to turn Voiceover off, then back on to get it back. Not really per sé a dealbreaker, but definitely really annoying.

By Karok on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

what new voices are available, and are there bugs with them? i assume they are Ai voices?

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

They said under the what's new section, that I think it was lithuanian that was now supported? Don't quote me on this. I don't have it up in front of me. I dono if that's just for braille, or a new voice as well. But that's all I'm aware of.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

So, while this is still not a dealbreaker for me, it's definitely incredibly annoying at best!

I have reported this through the Feedback app, but here's the deal.

So, let's say you're on a screen, and maybe you're focused on an item, oh, I dunno, 40 or 50 items scrolled down, so needless to say, quite a ways down the page/screen. Now, you double tap on that item. You then find that it wasn't after all where you wanted to go. So, you either hit the back button, or you do the 2 finger scrub motion to go back a screen, either/or.

Voiceover is consistently 100 percent of the time with no exception jumping me all the damn way back to the very top of the blasted screen rather than doing like before by remembering my last focused item, and returning my focus to it instead. I therefore lose my place, and if I'm again say, 50 items down the screen, you can only imagine how annoying this would be! If you can, then try it, and you'll find out otherwise real? fast! Trust me!

If yall also can reproduce this, would you do me a favor and also report it on your ends?

Thanks.

By danno5 on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I've noticed a bug where you can't always edit shortcuts, an example I'd provide you with is when editing the shortcuts at the bottom of the lock screen, ie torch/camera, I tried to swap it out for something else, voiceover reads all of the options, with about 85% focus accuracy before jumping a little bit. But when you attempt to add an option, voiceover will respond to the double tap, it just stays in that menu still presenting the same options as before.

By Joshua on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

With the control center try long pressing the thing you want to add, this works for me on my iPad

By danno5 on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Tried that on the phone yesterday. I'll give it a shot on the iPad in a little while and report back later, I'll also try it on the phone as well, you know beta software, its very on and off.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I wonder how this new things works where apparently the control center is supposed to have things like your Smarthome items in one category, your connectivity in another, etcetera, and supposedly, if I understood correctly, you're supposed to be able to then swype somehow to move between the different category groups. If I flick though with 3 fingers or even just double tap and hold then slide my finger left or right, nothing really seems to be happening aside such jiggling the control center a little back and forth, but of corse when letting go of the screen with your finger, the screen boings itself back in to place without really doing much of anything.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

So, I dunno if this is a Pocketcast thing, or if this is something kuhscrewidy with iOS 18, but just a bit ago when listening to a podcast in Pocketcast with my bluetooth headset, which BTW, are not Airpods, they're actually really high end Sonies, but anyway, when I hit the volume up or down buttons on the headset itself, I found that while it worked, if I got to fast/vigarous with the buttons, the podcast would just all of a sudden pause itself. The headset didn't disconnect. That much was fine. It just paused. Totally wicked strange! It doesn't seem to be doing this if no headset is connected, nor does it seem to be doing it when connected if I use the actual volume buttons on the phone itself. So yeah, it's kind of odd. Just thought I'd throw it out there though.

By Gar on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I'm having this issue with Alex. I'm also experiencing clipped speech with Alex, similar to what happened with Eloquence last year. I haven't reported this as it seems to be working fine for now, and I'm trying to see if I can figure out what actually causes the issue.

By danno5 on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I've noticed that when typing quite fast with BSI, VO can suddenly go silent and give up with any speech or typing feedback at all, sometimes it says random things, sometimes nothing. As soon as you move VO out of the text field, it seems fine again, but you do need to restart VO to get feedback in a text field when typing again.

By Ipadman on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

This is a bug which has been present since iOS 16, so I didn’t have much hope that it would be fixed, and it isn’t.
When on the lock screen, while playing an audio file, if you swipe up with one finger on the track slider, you can only move forward or back a couple of seconds rather than a percentage of the file as you could iOS 15.
This was particularly useful for longer audio files. You could easily swipe to where you needed to be and much more accurate than the double tap, Holden drag method and it was confirmed by Apple that it is a bug.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

In my case, it doesn't have to be in a text field nor with BSI. It seems to just randomly do it on my end regardless. Mind you, this is on the 13 Pro Max. I did put the beta on my 15 Pro Max for a bit, maybe for an hour or so, but once I saw that the AI features weren't available yet even over there, I went into DFU, and rolled back, and as for my other post, no. It didn't delete my Esim, thank God.

By Dennis Long on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

This has been reported. If you expect no bugs in a beta you will be terribly disappointed.

By glassheart on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Dennis, sorry if I misunderstand the tone of your post, but we never said we expected it to be bug free; in fact, quite the oppisit.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I keep my iPad in a case with the lid closed, and use it 100% with a Bluetooth keyboard and VoiceOver playing on the speakers. I would think this would not be out of the ordinary for most blind users.

SIRI doesn't respond when the case is closed. Neither "Hey SIRI" nor holding down the sleep wake switch. This worked fine in iPad OS 17.

By TheBllindGuy07 on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Thanks for re bringing this. This is why I still keep my ipod touch 7 with me on ios 15.

By Gar on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

With an iPhone 15 Pro, using an external keyboard I have had no problems with this. I'm able to enter my passcode on the keyboard regardless of if quicknav is on or off.

By ming on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I am afraid to get the first beta. because I just have 1 IPhone...
but, just want to know that.
does it have any new voices or features for voice over?

By Dennis Long on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I do this every year. That being said I do have a lot of beta testing experience. I was an alpha tester for the old Talks for symbian phones. AKA the Nokia phones. If you are going to put it on your main device expect bugs and be willing to deal with them. If I were you I would wait til beta 2 or beta 3. Like I said I do it to catch and report bugs as quick as possible to help all users. Hope this helps.

By Lielle ben simon on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

I installed ios 18 the first beta and I can't open Text Field with dubble tap on that.
Even when Braille Display connected.

By Dennis Long on Sunday, June 9, 2024 - 09:46

Not enough information given.
1 what model of phone?
2 what model of display?
3 Where specifically is this happening?
Example:
In the messages I attempt to tap on the edit box and nothing happens.
I am not able to reproduce this just based on the limited info I have. I'm using an orbit writer which shows as an orbit 20.

By Falco on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Hello,

A question for the beta users of iOS 18. Is it possible to check what Belgian dutch voices are available and can also give the size of the installation files in MB?

Thanks!

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

All people who do videos about iOS in youtube always tell people that do not install the beta in a main device. You do it at your own risk. I will wait for it to be beta 3 or 4. Appreciate those who do beta testing for doing so. Nice job.

By Gar on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Hi,
The only two voices available for that region are Ellen and Ellen enhanced (49.3 MB)

By Ollie on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Regarding siri not working with screen locked, it might be worth toggling the feature off in siri settings, restarting, and then turning it back on. Sometimes there's a tangle in the upgrade path with permissions.

I've not got any pressing travel arrangements over the next week so going to put it on my iPhone 15 pro. I've taken a backup and will revert before I head up country next Wednesday.

Thanks for this list of bugs so far. An aside, I was already having issues with voiceover stopping speaking on IOS 17.5.1 so I think it's more likely a continuing bug rather than a new one. That's with Alex though did seem to be related to using BSI, so we'll have to see.

On iPad it's all running pretty flawlessly so far. There are a few design decisions that might need work, the ability to assign voiceover controls to the BSI command input, but voice is stable, apps are running fine. I'm actually quite impressed. Some years it's been unusable. Obviously a lot of work put into accessibility this year on IOS... shame mac is still a dump fire.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Interesting that you don't see the issue with the iPhone 15 Pro, but I have it with the iPad Pro 3rd gen. Well, Apple has my sysdiagnose, so they can sort it out.

By PaulMartz on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Ollie, whether the device is locked or not is irrelevant. SIRI doesn't respond when my iPad case is closed. Toggling the setting for "always listen for SIRI" has no effect, and I noted that in the Feedback report.

By Ollie on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 09:46

Are you sure it responded before? I know if I lie my iPhone face down it doesn't respond by design, I wonder if the closed case is the same deal. I've got a few apple devices and it's kinda annoying when they all kick off. I think the assumption is that if the case is closed you're not using the device., and the always listening only works when the case is open or the screen is on.
