Hello. Personally, I like to close what I don't need. Especially having that autorefresh on, I know can drain the battery. I wish they'd come out with a single gesture to close everything at once. If they have this magical solution, I have not remembered it. Hope that helps.
You don't need to force quit apps that are in the background. Unless you have background app refresh enabled, those apps in the background go to sleep and launch quickly if you switch to them. https://techzillo.com/force-closing-apps-good-bad/
I always close the apps that I am not currently using. Do you have GPS apps on your phone? Fully charge your phone, open them, then use other apps, leaving the GPS apps running in the background for about 6 to 8 hours. Now, go to the home screen and check the battery status. Let us know how drained it is. Try doing the same test, but, this time, close the GPS apps after using them for a few minutes. Let us know your findings.
I close them. If I'm listening to an audiobook or magazine from Bard., I generally won't though. Because sometimes if I do it reverts back to the default setting. For example, if I'm reading a boxed set of audiobooks, and I have it set to go by chapter, if I close the app, it'll reset to go by book @ times. Not often but it happens. Or it'll go back a bit in the book.
I think it clears up resources. Or if I have updates then I don't close the app store when they're loading/installing.
But, I especially close them when I turn my ipad off. I think as a rule of thumb, I'd close your apps out. Unless there's a spicific reason not to, like when an update to an app is loading, or remember when you had to have Weather Gods open in the background when it first started? I say close them because they'll autorefresh if you have it toggled on, as I do.

I'd close them.

I tend to do so if I am not going to use them. Also when I turn my iPhone off, I do also.

I've always closed apps that I know i'm not gonna use for a while. It saves my battery.
