Anyone tried the New Instant Pot Smart Wifi?

I guess my subject says it all, really. Anyone tried this version of the instant pot, &, if so, is the app at all usable? Some of the reviews seem to indicate difficulties using the app w/Voiceover. Any thoughts welcome. I thought about buying this because it's the same price as the Duo right now.

I have one of these.

I have successfully used the app to pair the device without any sighted assistance, and regularly use it to assign various modes, set times, and preset it to start doing whatever I want at a specific time of day in order to have my food ready when I get home from work. Not going to lie, the app is kind of obnoxious, but it does work, you just have to try some different gestures sometimes and make sure that what you're tapping on is actually visible on the screen. Meaning, if you swipe to find something then double tap it, it may not click properly. I'd be happy to elaborate further if you have specific questions or problems.

Appreciate this feedback! I decided to buy it rather than the Duo because Amazon has the Smart Wifi for exactly the same price as the Duo, ie, the smart Wifi is $30 off. I figured I could just use it as a regular pot if the app didn't work, but you're saying it does (sorta). Even sighted folks complain about this 1 lol. Sounds like they need a new programming team at IP, &, from what I'm reading, a new technical support team as well lol. Like I said, even sighted folks complain vociferously about it. I might ask you to contact me privately if I need help, &/or just to share experiences & recipes. That might prove both instructive & fun for both of us. Thanks again, Froglet. Have a blessed week!

Hi,

Of course, when you get it, I'd be happy to talk more about using the app! As you mention, you can use the pot as well if the app is being a pain in the rear, as the buttons on the panel are raised. Since the display is very bright and large, you can use an app like Be My Eyes as well in order to read the screen as you program the pot until you get the hang of using the panel without any assistance.

I think you're going to love your Instant Pot. They are wonderful!

Have a great day!

sockhopsinger, even sighted folks are complaining bitterly about the app for this device. It really does sound like it needs a good overhauling. Froglet, I get my pot tomorrow. I really need it, because we had a fire last week, & I no longer have a stove to cook with. The insurance company's fighting me about coverage for it. So I'm really hoping I can get up to speed on the IP soon. I'm not a fan of the frozen processed crap that goes under the serious misnomer of food. It's a little scary starting out w/a new cooking device, especially when you don't have alternatives. Guess there's nothing like being thrown into the lake head first. Where did you get your recipes?

By Froglet on Saturday, February 23, 2019 - 15:43

I just look up my recipes on food blogs. The Instant Pot has developed such a following that there are tons of great recipes out there, and lots of people talking about it. My next goal is to make an Instant Pot cheesecake.

Really though, sometimes I don't use a recipe and just throw some meat in there with vegetables and turn the thing on high pressure for 30 minutes. It's pretty no-fail as long as your meat chunk isn't over 2lbs, in which case you'd want some more time on it. I don't mind occasionally subbing a processed item in for convenience after a long day, so sometimes I buy a simmer sauce that I can toss in with the meat/vegetables, then make rice on the side. It's pretty impossible for that to turn out badly.

About the app, I haven't written to the devs because it does work, even though technically it could be more friendly. Although really we all probably should. I saw somewhere that a VO user wrote to them requesting some improvements and they said that VO was a third-party app and that they didn't have to make the app compatible. Not too impressed with that kind of response.

Guess there's no accounting for stupid, is there, Froglet? The truth, actually, of course, is that theirs is the 3rd-party app--VO is built right into the Apple ecosystem. Ignorance is 1 thing--you can usually persuade folks who genuinely don't know. But stupid is when they don't know but nonetheless have already made up their mind. As I said, the reviews from normally sighted people both of this app & their support team are pretty abysmal. I guess the device must be good enough to overcome all that.

I'm not saying all processed food is evil. I'm just saying I don't want it to be a mainstay of my family's diet, & right now it's hard to do that w/o a stove. So I'm hoping the IP will help, & that I can get up to speed reasonably quickly.

Hello Instant Pot users. I have been following this forum because I have considered adding an Instant Pot to my own kitchen arsenal. While reading, I thought that it worth mentioning here that the AnyList app, by Purple Cover Inc., does have some instant pot recipes available through their web browser search feature which look really good.

In case you aren't familiar with the AnyList app... First it is a grocery list maker which can be shared with other AnyList users, which makes it nice if the wife sends the husband to the store. She can create the list, and he gets instant updates, even if she uses an iPhone and he uses an Android phone. Items that have been purchased are easily crossed off. Once a new item has been added to the list for the first time, if you click favorite, then it is available for future use without fully retyping it. If you purchase the same item in multiple stores, you can add the price and check it at another store to decide if peanut butter is cheaper at store A or store B. There are as many categories as you could want, some that are prepopulated and you can create your own or sort and modify the existing ones. You can even sort the categories depending on how each store has been laid out. For example, my Walmart puts the dairy case way in the back, which is where I start shopping so it is the top category.

Second, you can create a list for anything you can imagine. Some of mine include model numbers for appliances, a supplements list including brand, what is in the supplement, and how many taken per day. Also, I have created a check list for tracking my workouts, a wish list for those things that I can't afford right now but don't want to lose track of, and the possibilities are endless.

Third, there is a recipe manager in the app. You can find recipes, add them to your personal collections, and you can change the portions, i.e., if a recipe makes enough for four people but you are cooking for twelve, you can modify the whole recipe fast.

Fourth, there is also a meal planner in the app, which helps you to keep on track and organized. The AnyList team have made this app completely accessible for Voiceover users. There is a free and subscription model. The free version doesn't give you the meal planner or full access to the web browser to find recipes. The paid version gives all of that plus it keeps a complete copy of your lists and recipes in its secure database, which is very helpful if you change devices. You have the individual and family level for subscription choices. Neither option is that expensive, either. Personally, I don't know how I made it without this app. I think that it will assist any Instant Pot user to find and enjoy new recipes.

I was reading through all of these posts and really really need help with the app. I can't seem to activate anything in it. When i first paired my smart pot it was working fine with the app then I went back into the app to look at the functions and couldn't operate a darn thing! Also advice on a few things would be great IE when I use the slow cooker function how do i switch from low - normal - high? Lastly, how do I change the pressure level when i'm going to use the pressure cooking feature?

Hello,

I also bought the wifi instant pot but I still not use it because I want to hear a podcast how to use it. Are there any starter recipes I can try?

Regards

I just googled recipes for the instant pot and I haven't heard a podcast yet on how to use it. I used the app "be my eyes" to set it up and cook with it. I did email instant pot's support email address about the inaccessibility of the app.
