Hello all. I just recently joined AppleVis because I will soon be getting an iPhone 8, and I may, no, probably will, have a lot of questions once I start using it. I've never really used an iPhone before, except maybe one time when I got to mess around with one for a few minutes just to see if I could type on a touch screen. Other than that, the only Apple product I have is an iPod Shuffle I bought in 2011, with the round ring of buttons.
Anyway, I have started doing some online research because I want to know how to set everything up when I get it. I was always told I'd need sighted assistance with starting VoiceOver for the first time, but after that I could use it just fine, as long as VoiceOver stayed on. But I read somewhere recently, I don't know if it was on this site or not, that VO could be started with Siri, and then the setup for the phone could continue from there. Is this possible? I thought you had to do some kind of setup process with Siri too. Or does Siri just work the first time you press the Home button, straight out of the box?

iOs setup
After you first power on your iPhone, press the home button three times rapidly to turn on Voiceover and start the setup process. The home button on an iPhone 8 is actually a haptic touch area shaped like a physical button, so it might be a good idea to put one hand under the phone when you press it so you can confirm you're pressing it hard enough.
Later in the setup, you'll be prompted to train Siri to recognize your voice, and you are also given the option to change the amount of pressure required to press the home button.

Thanks!
Wow, that's cool! Thanks. I forgot about tripple-click home.
Good luck with your new iPhone. :-)
Enjoy your new iPhone, my friend. :-) You will be able to use voiceover as soon as you power on your iPhone. :-)
Good luck with your new phone
Hi Musicjunky,
This is a wonderful site for learning your new iPhone. Feel free to ask questions. Everyone here is always so helpful! And there's lots of podcasts you'll enjoy too. Welcome!
Hi,
Hi,
Just triple click the home button once the phone has turned on. There's no need for Siri. I set up an iPhone SE all the way without it.
Sincerely,
Maddy
Thanks again!
Thanks everyone for all the replies. It'll still be a few weeks before I get the phone, but I'm already so excited about it! :) I've wanted an iPhone for a long time, and now I'm finally getting one. I can't wait to send a text to my sister! :)
