Hi, for the last 2 years I have had my voiceover randomly stop talking and just make the sounds. The fix is to turn on and off the voiceover. I am currently using an iphone 8 with the latest ios 12.1 something as of today. Same issue. Apple has had me reset this phone and my past 6s and 7. No resolve. Does anyone know if they have ever soved this. Some friends I have have the same issue also. Thanks, Chris
update:
So I reset my phone as new. The issue returned today. I called apple, they are replacing my phone. When I get it setup I will post another update on whether or not it is resolved.

Yes, it is a really annoying bug.
This is a really annoying bug. It happens on my iPod touch fifth-generation running ios9.3.5 as well as my iPod touch six generation running iOS 12.0. So it has not been fixed since it started happening. Of course my iPod fifth GEN is jailbroken, so that may be a side effect of it. I think we should keep contacting Apple until they fix it. In the meantime, just do what you were saying in the forum. Turn off and back on VO
Did you...
Hello,
Did you set up your iPhone as new or did you restore from back up? I ask because you mentioned you had this problem on your previous device.
Here is what I would do.
Back up your device using iTunes.
Restore your device using iTunes and set it up as new.
Do not install any apps and test for a day or two to determine if the problem still occurs.
If the problem is still there, contact Apple. If the problem is no longer there, you can download and install each app. You can also restore from back up but you might also end up restoring the problem.
HTH and good luck.
I Had This Too
I had this problem too on my Mac for awhile, and it seems like the new internal file system resolved it for me at least. I think backing up frequently helps too. I personally have never used iTunes to back up my Mac or iPhone, but I ordered a Western Digital MyPassport external hard drive a couple years ago. I've not had this problem on my iPhone. I wonder if it's just one of those things that only affects people at random.
setting up as new
So I did not think of setting it up from new. When I got the 8 the store person refused to not let her setup my phone. She assummed I couldn't lol. Anyway I will try it that way. As far as installing apps I suppose I should get them through the app store after the phone is setup as new? Thansk Chris
Thanks I will do that
Thanks. I did restore it using iTunes and set it up as new but as soon as I had done that I started installing apps. I will try it for a day or two and not install apps. Hopefully it goes away
I've had VO only make sounds,
I've had VO only make sounds, but only within apps. It never seems to do that in the Apple apps. But like, if an app isn't accessible, VO will do that. Otherwise, I've never had VO randomly stop on the Home screen or anything.
when it stops
So to clarify when it doesn't talk. It is any app whether apple or third party doesn't matter. In fact after the reset and start as new phone I asked serie to read a message and responded and it then stopped talking. So I cycled voiceover on and off and immediately called apple. It then stopped talking so I could not hear the keyboard numbers to press the correct selections. Glad I knew where they were. The awesome apple rep said lets replace it. I just hope it resolves the issue. It happens around ten to twelve times a day and it is very frustrating. It happens when I am on the phone alot and I need to check to see if my calendar is open with my clients so I have to hang up and call back. I should get the new phone here soon so when I do I will follow up on this. Thanks for all the interest and help.
this happens to me when running IOS 12
I thought I was the only one that had this problem I have a new Iphone ITS, I don't remember if it happened on my 6S, but I got the new phone this last month, and it certainly has happened on it. I have to restart VO, but, it is very anoying to lose speach. this has even happened after the second Ios 12 updatea 12jα?
update with the new phone
Ok hear we go. received my replacement i phone 8. I set it up as new.. Within a couple of hours it stopped talking. No bluetooths connected, no 3rd party apps installled yet. I am shocked. So is Apple. They have sent a report to the engineers. So I reset the phone again. I did it from new. Again. This time I redownloaded all my apps. Connected my bluetooths. In the process of telling Serie to open an app so I don't have to constantly scroll it stops talking. Hmmmmmm..... is this a pattern? So I have been avidly playing with this thing alot. Serie is the number one problem when it stops talking. Command is irrelevant, it seems more so on opening any given app but it happens if I am dictating also. I believe the bug is in between serie and voiceover. I cannot help but wonder if the phone gets confused on whether Serie or voiceover should be speaking. This happens at least ten to twelvle times a day. Most frequent is I use Serie for texting, and to call people. Some where in the midst of that I touch the screen and it is just making voiceover noises. This is a real problem. I will definitly call apple again. I am certain I picked up a pattern. I hope this is helping any one out there. The best solution is for anyone else to also call Apple and tell them.. If I hear of a workaround or fix I will post again. Thanks
Chris
