A small problem in settings.

There is a accessibility issue in the app's settings, under the privacy settings and twitter and facebook connectivity settings. let's take for example the twitter and facebook connectivity settings: There is a list where are items to select and unselect. they define what messages are posted to twitter and/or facebook. unfortunately, simply double tapping the row doesn't do the thing. The trick is that there is a checkbox in the beginning of the row, wich is recognized only if dragging your finger around the screen. I contacted @4sqSupport on twitter, and I hope they'll fix this issue in later update. the same issue is in the privacy settings. Otherwise this app is fully accessible. I tested it on iPhone 4, iOs 5.1

Auto Check-In

Has anyone tried any of the auto check-in apps like the Checkmate for Foursquare?

Yowsers! All new layout. Still work out of the box. Not as friendly as it was in earlier version. The Profile tab is now a complete shamble. Sigh! Just disappointed as each version of Four Square comes out the more and more it becomes inaccessible. What's New in Version 5.0 Say hello to the all new foursquare! Don't stress!

Give them a week. They understand that things are broken. Here is a tweet from someone who works there. "@beerman1991 Hey we are aware that we broke a bunch of accessibility stuff, started the fixes a couple days ago, watch for 5.1 next wk or so." Then he said that "We have set up a dedicated email for feedback on this stuff if you want to report specific issues: accessibility@foursquare.com"

two questions?

Hi. I don't see the accessibility of this going into the tubes, simply because the developers are aware of it, i'm also not one to just say it's not accessible on the first try. My only questions are these, when you open the app, right beside the global checkinbutton, is another unlabeled button. If that were labeled then it would help. My other question is, when you check in, what's the Icon Lock button for? Just curious as I enjoy posting where I am on FB and the like. I really enjoy this site and hope to submit valuable content that others may benefit from.

Developers are aware

Well, it is certainly nice to hear that the developers are aware of the issues and not only that but are working on it! That is a first but great news! Yes, I suppose you can say it isn't for say inaccessible but the Profile tab is rather daunting to look at to fix. To some this may be to much work to fix up and for others that really want to take the plunge in fixing it up can do that as well. If it weren't for the IOS 5 capability to rename those button I would say that it would be consider unfriendly for a portion of this app. However, I still feel in what I have listed above for listing of it is still doable if you are willing to put up with it. For now, I will need to clean it up and hope to see the next version much better as they claim to be doing. We shall see.

question on making your own checkin points?

hi all. i can't see how to for example, checkin at my house or anything like that. in other words, create my own checkin points. any ideas as to how to do this?

Version 5.2.3

For the most part it is pretty accessible with the exception of one unlabeled button on the friends tab. The Check In is still at the top right but if you select the top left and flick to the right it will go pass the check in button. Wierdly enough you have to flick left to get to the check in button. Just a bit worried in the Updates says to watch for new Visually new things to come. Yikes! I hope this will not break it on the next update? ;) What's New in Version 5.2.3 A bunch of updates await you! Look out for design tweaks to make things prettier, bug fixes to make things faster, and ice cream to make summer better. (Search for some in Explore!)

Verstion 5.2.4

There are good and bad news with this release. The good news is that they have made the Check In much easier. The bad news is that they have moved your Facebook, Twitter, and I blieve the Tumbler to the top right side of your Check In screen. All three buttons are not labeled. The top one is Facebook below this is the Twitter and below that is Tumbler. I'm not certain if it is the Tumbler because I don't use this feature at all. Anyhow, you can't tell if they are on or off. So you will need to double tap on each of these button to turn them on and do it again to turn them off. This options allow you to share your Four Square Check In for other Social Networking services. By defaul, they are on. So if you know you are not getting your Twitter Tweet of your Check In then make sure you have logged in to Twitter first in your Settings page Account area. If so, then just double tap the second button. This should now turn this option on. So it is workable but not very friendly. :( What's New in Version 5.2.4 With this update we've made it easier to share (or not share!) your check-ins to Facebook and Twitter by moving the options up to the top of the screen. We've also continued to make a bunch of design and under-the-hood improvements to keep foursquare fast and intuitive. Take it for a spin!

Now has fixed the accessibility problems in the Check In area! However, there is one unlabel button with in the Explore tab. Overall, they are back on the roll of the app being very accessible! The sad area is the Explore Tab

I absolutely love Foursquare. From an accessibility point of view, I keep experiencing some Voiceover misbehaviour especially in the highly praised Explore tab. Apart from an unlabelled button being announced from time to time, Voiceover also happens to "skip" within the recommended venues, which makes browsing it somewhat unpleasant. Still, I'm glad they keep working on accessibility problems and fixing whatever they can.

This is a new update and I have not seen any sort of accessibility issues with it. So the coast is clear! ;)

version 5.4.1 released on january 11

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. version 5.4.1 was released late Friday night. I'm still seing issues with the number of points earned after a check in. I wonder if it's possible that they moved that information to another part of the app and people just haven't found it yet? I've only had the app for like 3 days so I'm just learning it. Anyways the update is out so grab it if you like.

Twitter sign up from Iphone not working

HI guys: Last night I downloaded and installed 4square and ran into a little problem I'd like to address: In signing in to Twitter either from the Twitter icon on the Check In area, or within Settings Facebook and Twitter, I had to do this from the Pc; from the IPhone I'd double tap Twitter and nothing would happen!

Finding the number of points earned

In version 4.1, I was able to find the number of points earned from my last check in by backing out of the menus as far as I could go and then flicking to the button that read the last place I had checked in. When I went into that area, I was able to see that I was still mayor of my house, my leader board stats and the number of points from that check in. I am not convinced this is the only place where those points show up, as there appear to be some places in the app which VoiceOver does not read at all. I will keep playing and report if I find anything significant.

Version 5.4.2

A minor update was released today. Not certain but it does appear that when you check in to places now that you no longer get your points update. It just says You are now checked in or you are still currently the mayor and etc. So I don't think it is a bug but more of a new feature by Foursquare. I have seen some people reported this as a bug where I don't think that is the case. Please correct me on this if you think otherwise?

What's New in Version 5.4.3

With this update, we're improving check-in notification settings to help you keep up with the people you care most about. Head to your settings from the profile tab to try them out!

✓ Choose "ALWAYS" for close friends and family you always want to keep up with. You'll get notifications for all their check-ins, no matter where they are in the world.

✓ Choose "NEARBY" for friends you'd like to hear about from time to time. We'll only notify you when they're close by.

✓ Choose "OFF" for those acquaintances you don't really want updates from. And that bike messenger friend who checks in at every spot on his route.

Version 6.0

An intersting update. Definetly a major overhaul in what we had before. The UI is isn't as clean and simple as it once was. With some learning of where things went. You shouldn't have to much of a hard time. There are some unlabel buttons and several areas that I can hear a click but nothing is spoken.

I like the fact you can see the recommendations. For example, when I checked my Foursquare it was about lunch time. So it recommended some lunch places that I thought I be interested in. I do like that feature.

Overall, it's different. Don't particularly like the update myself but that is my first thought on this release. What about you?

Version 6.2.2

What's New in Version 6.2.2 Less tapping, more exploring! Save time while you're out with friends with the new option to check them in (only with their permission, of course!). Plus with new filters in Explore, you can do searches to suit your every need. Looking for a cheap, friend-approved lunch spot that you haven't tried yet? Or maybe you want to sort your coffee recommendations by distance. Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, then filter by options like "price," "specials," "distance," "haven't been," or "open now" to find the perfect place.

Non-Visually Adding Places?

Is there an accessible / non-visual way on either the Foursquare web site or the app to add places? When I tried doing so via the Foursquare web site, it made me have to place my location precisely on a visual map instead of simply entering in the street address and being done with it.

Add your Location

Hello Misty,

Well, you can from the FourSquare App itself. Though, it isn't as easy as it use to be. So hopeing that somebody would have an easier alternative.

First you must be at the location that you want to add:
1) Open the FourSquare App
2) Double tap on the CheckIn button located at the bottom center of the screen
3) Towards the top is the Search Location
4) Double tap and do any kind of search so in this example I just used zzzz and then Search
5) Scroll down until you find the Add This Place button
6) Double tap on the Add This Place
7) Now give it a name, Select the Category, and an address if you want
8) Double tap on the Add button at the top right hand corner
9) Boom. Now you have added a new location

Sharing to Social Media

When I check into a place, it seems that my checkins are no longer posting to Facebook. On the checkin screen, I click "Facebook" and it says it's selected but yet it still says that Facebook sharing is turned off. This confuses me. Still further, I check my Facebook and it doesn't post even though I selected "Facebook"? Is this happening to anyone else in the latest version. If so, is there a workaround or has this feature now become inaccessible with VoiceOver?

The same thing happens to me

The same thing happens to me butt using twitter instead of facebook. The twitter and Facebook switches are no longer switches for VoiceOver, but I don't know if it is possible to activate/deactivate them.

It was funny to know how many people were at the same place, now with swarm this only can be done with friends.

Accessibility going downhill again

I find using Foursquare more and more difficult using VoiceOver. Browsing through a search result list is a pain - it kicks the VoiceOver focus out of the list all the time and the list doesn‘t scroll along while being browsed with VO. The same happens with the tips for a selected venue.
When searching, it is not clear to me anymore in how large an area Foursquare actually searches. If only it would have a number like 2 miles around current location or similar.
I liked Foursquare for all its precious tips around the world. But at the moment, using it really sucks...
