Hi all. As some of you know by now I finally got that first iPhone for which I had been patiently waiting since a little before Christmas. Well on Saturday morning, the day before Easter, my father asked me during breakfast if I wanted to go to one of the AT&T stores in our area to look at iPhones. I agreed to do this, so we finished breakfast and I got my things together, and he got his things together. Then we drove to the store and were immediately greeted by a friendly employee. We told him exactly what we were after, so he motioned for us to come with him and take a look. I ended up settling on an iPhone 7, and they immediately set up Siri and VoiceOver. Then they showed me some of the phone's basic functions, and they had me feel different iPhone cases and choose one. I have thus far made a few phone calls via Siri from the phone, and I'm very impressed with it. The audio quality is fantastic, and I had absolutely no trouble with Siri. Earlier today I attempted to send myself an iMessage from the Mac, and it came through on my iPhone and VoiceOver read it out. Face Time also seems to work well on there. I did some gestures, and they went well. I'm going for some more in-depth training at Second Sense here in Chicago, and am waiting to hear back about when exactly I can go in. But so far so good. I like my iPhone, and of course can't thank Apple enough for their ongoing hard work and dedication to universal access. I got iOS 11.0, but I think the phone updated this morning to 11.3 . Stay tuned as I'll probably become a regular poster in the iOS forum(s) on here. My first training at Second Sense is tomorrow, and I'm very excited. I've figured out some more things using the Siri interface, and no doubt will start learning more tomorrow. This is very cool though.
Update 26 April of the current year: I'm now on an iPhone 14 and loving it. Life with no home button took a bit of getting used to, but I'm now used to it and it's no problem at all. I now know why Apple made this move, and think I'd have perhaps done the same thing. I've gotten used to toggling on/off VoiceOver using the power button, as well as the other stuff that was done with the home button. I've yet to learn Face ID, so I've de-activated it for now.

new iphone
Hello Ekaj,
Congrats on your new iPhone! I know that you are going to love it. Looking forward to your posts. Enjoy!
Best.
It's addictive
Apple eko system is addictive: the more you have, the more you want. Indeed, this is the best invention since Louis Braille alphabet and by no means Apple has revolutionarised life of the blind.
Welcome to the iPhone
Hi Ekaj, welcome to the iPhone. I am glad to hear that you are orientating yourself on using it. I find that having a smart phone, more specifically an iPhone, is becoming more and more a "swiss army knife" type of tool. Although I have recently delved into the Mac world myself, I find myself using my iPhone pretty much to do absolutely everything. It's a great tool to have and one of my greatest tools to have in my toolbelt, well after my guide dog that is.
Good luck!
Enjoy your new phone!
Ekaj:
There is always so much helpful information on this site too. Check out all the Beginner's Guide stuff and the "Getting started with your new iPhone" information. Maybe you've already read these. And like Blinken223 has said, These phones are the next best thing to, in my case, to a German Shepherd guide! Feel free to post questions on this site. Everyone is so helpful! Best to you!
iPhone Only Second Place To My Guide Dog
My iPhone has truly revolutionized my life. When I got my first guide dog some 37 years ago, (shiver shiver), that was a life changing event for me. When I first got my iPhone back in 2010, my life has also never been the same since. As with other posters above, I do just about everything on my iPhone now. This site has introduced me to so many new apps and has many helpful people available for any questions you may have. The more you use your iPhone the faster the learning curve will go away and you simply enfold all it's capabilities into your life without thinking about it.
Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life.
Totally Agree
I completely agree. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 14, and am finding it very nice. Some people in my area perhaps don't understand just how much I can do with this hand-held gem and how much it has helped me, namely my personal assistant. He's very good but a bit old-school. I was told in the weeks leading up to getting my first iOS device, that I would love it, and that is exactly how I feel about it. The scope of what these things can do for us is amazing, and it's only getting better. Sure there might be bugs here and there, but nobody and nothing is perfect.
