This app was recently rated as one of the best apps of 2016 on a podcast that I follow.
There isn’t anything about the app on here; whilst Google shows that the developer has made some positive noises in the past about improving VoiceOver support, but not if this actually happened.
As it’s a paid app, I didn’t want to throw down my $5 only to find it wasted on something I can’t use (yes, I know that you can supposedly get a refund from Apple, but I would rather know in advance as my past experience of seeking a refund wasn’t particularly positive).

Can be used, but is not really accessible

Thought I'd share my experience. I did download Airmail for iPhone a couple days ago, having read that they just received an "Apple Design Award".
The German version of Apple's Media Information about this year's award sounded as if Airmail would be fully accessible*.
Sadly, this does not seem to be the case.
Yes, setting up email accounts and browsing the Inbox does work.
But all the customizable actions (like custom Swipe Actions) are not available when VoiceOver is running.
There are also quite a number of unlabeled buttons. they either make email messages disappear into the Trash, into an Archive folder, or the buttons don't do anything at all. Or let's say: Nothing I could perceive so far.
Furthermore, the not so new VoiceOver features (like Custom Rotor Actions, which would be a great replacement for the Custom Swipes) are not implemented at all.
Thus, I must conclude that from my experience, I am far better off staying with the built in Mail app. But I certainly do hope Airmail gets more accessible.

The German text starts with "Dieser vollständig zugängliche E-Mail Clieent", which translates to "This fully accessible email client...".

Nope, no change
Things are just the same with Airmail as they always were from an accessibility point of view.
I‘ve pretty much given up on it and read my mail using the native IOS app again.
