Accessibility Comments

VoiceOver does not read any elements of the screen other than video controls and text edit fields. You cannot go through the initial setup process without sighted assistance. I went as far as the tuning of my Uke and discovered that I could enter my login details which I created on the website and control the videos that came up. I also discovered that the chromatic tuner, unlike so many out there gives you both visual and audible feedback when your instrument is in tune.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads no page elements.

Button Labeling

No buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

Some parts of the app are accessible with VoiceOver, but not enough to make it usable.

Other Comments

This app, while initially free does have a premium subscription service which will, apparently, give you more songs etc. I had heard so many good things about this app when i started to learn the Ukulele at the end of November but sadly it's just not accessible at all other than the things I have mentioned above. Also, I am from the UK so the link here will probably take you to the UK store but it's available in other countries too such as the States. I have contacted support today with a very lengthy email pointing out the parts of the app that work well and how making it accessible would greatly benefit blind musicians. I also plan to get on their facebook community and their twitter feed and do exactly the same. I will let you know how I get on.

My friends who are cited use this app and they love it and have learned a lot, I wish it was accessible with voiceover, there’s a lot of instruments I want to learn. I am going to contact the developer on Twitter I will let you know if I hear anything, did they respond to your email?

Hi. That's brilliant. I think we need to put some real pressure on these guys and get them to do something about this app and the more of us that contact them regarding the accessibility issues, the more weight it will carry i suspect. I haven't had a response as yet but this may be due to the fact that it was the weekend when I initially emailed. I am also not sure where about in the world the developers are. The videos I have listened to were done by an Australian man but I think I saw that they were from Finland so who knows? A piece of advice, if you do contact them and you decide to do it via their website, use your iDevice. I really struggled with this on a windows pc and found it much easier using my iPhone with Safari. Keep us posted as to whether you get a response and i will do the same.
