Speech Central: Book Aloud

Category

Description of App

This edition of text to speech app is specially crafted for schools to make learning more productive and accessible, helping everyone to find his way to better grades and greater knowledge.

With 11 supported text file formats, you can import any material to be read aloud - supported document types are: PDF* (imported in an intelligent way so that repetitive text in headers and footers is skipped), Microsoft Word (.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), OpenOffice/LibreOffice (.odt, .odp), .html, .txt, supported ebook formats are .epub, DAISY and .fb2 and emails in .eml format. All those formats will work only if a document has no DRM (PDF files with passwords can be imported).

The app can also import the content of web pages with a special care to limit this access only to the safe content by receiving only the pages shared from Safari.

The app is tested to be accessible with VoiceOver by legally blind users. It can be used as an assistive technology and helper for people with visual impairments and disabilities like dyslexia (dyslexia friendly font is included in the app), and it contains many settings specially crafted for those purposes. Bookshare, an accessible online library is integrated into the app.

To pass the exams successfully requires more than just reading - annotation and search are necessary. Annotation tools are there to mark the document as favorite, bookmark an important paragraph in it or add a comment. Old texts are kept in the Archive which supports powerful search and filtering features and keeps it available offline.

When used with stock iPhone headphones, the app offers unmatched accessibility and productivity. Those headphones can invoke multiple commands with their buttons, and functions of those commands can be customized to navigate and annotate the text efficiently without touching the screen.

Latest iOS features including iOS 11 new look, drag and drop, 3D Touch, Spotlight Search and Dynamic Type are fully supported. The app can be used with any of 27 languages that have text-to-speech support on iOS, and all major languages are supported for the full automatic recognition.

*PDF is available only on iOS 11.

Hello,

This app sounds similar to Voice Dream reader but with one difference. It has the ability to remove all headers from PDF files, which should render the reading experience very smooth. I would be interested in your observations if you have used either this app or its predecessor called Speech Central. Also, it would be helpful to hear from you if you have used both Speech Central and Voice Dream Reader.

Another question pertains to the voices available in Speech Central. Voice Dream Reader allows for in-app purchases of numerous other voices, and I would like to know whether Speech Central has this feature as well. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Rajesh,

VoiceDream Reader is targeting a slightly different audience, and it is slightly more customisable than Speech Central. You can still purchase Speech Central, if you wish to have the full experience, e.g. book and article reading, RSS feed support, importing articles from the web, etc. The School Reader version does not have those features, and it is targeting a younger audience.

Speech Central does not include additional voices.

Hope this helps!
