By AppleVis, 26 September, 2017

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Just a week after the launch of iOS 11, Apple has today released iOS 11.0.1.

Apple's release notes for iOS 11.0.1 simply state that the update “includes bug fixes and improvements for your iPhone or iPad.”

At the time of posting, it is unknown as to whether any of these fixes address the bugs that iOS 11 introduced for blind and low vision users. We will update this post if we learn of any fixes. In the meantime, please let us know in the comments of any fixes, enhancements or regressions that you find in your own testing of this release.

iOS 11.0.1 is available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings > General > Software Update) or via iTunes on a Mac or PC.

Though other braille bugs still remain, it appears one can now type quickly without the display missing characters or disconnecting. The display still doesn't reconnect reliably when unlocking the phone, but at least you can type quickly now.

The notifications on locked screen are irratic. When it first comes up the date speaks, but you have to swipe down. However in RaiseTo Wake it will start with the notification. They might consider loosing the time indication and just stick with the notification if there is one. I did appreciate the old way that it did it. The phone is not my watch. The notifications are more important.

Hi All,

I can confirm using iOS 11.0.1 and iPhone 6s notifications are not working now on the lock screen. All that happens is VO announces the time. You have to scroll to read them. This was working fine in iOS 11.0.

On my iPhone 6s, I have not been able to trigger the springboard crash anymore. That one was really bothersome to me, so I’m glad that it seems to be fixed.

Yes. Notification is not working. Whenever I get a notification, it just tells me the time instead of what notification. Also deleting emails is different now. Instead of just using finger up to delete, you need to go to edit and select the email you want to delete and go to the button below to trash.

I am sorry to say that the issue of single finger double tapping on a mail message in the mail app still does not reliably produce the default action of activating/opening the mail message. The actions list still often remains stuck on the last action taken, but not reliably so.
At first I thought this had been fixed, but after working with it for a while and continued testing, it appears still broken.

I consider this a real disincentive to use the mail app on my iPhone 6 since I can't count on not accidentally deleting a message unless I check the state of the action list for each mail item before performing a single finger double tap.

Hope this can resolved soon or I'll have to use another app.

Confirmed - On my iPhone 6 notifications that come to the locked screen are not reliably spoken by VO when they arrive. Sometimes they are, but most times not. I don't know what the difference is.

At least the time is now being spoken if I hit the power button with the screen locked. That is nice because I like a quick way of checking the time.

Hell all!

I have a question about the QR. Code reader in ios. 11. My question is: Can the QR. Code reader identify products? I've been curious about it since its debut in 11.0. Thanks in advance and your help is much appreciated!

Hi! i installed the update for iOs 11.0.1, and my iPhone works better from iOs11. i am very recommand this.

I rely on Bluetooth streaming audio directly to my hearing aids, otherwise I cannot hear the audio clearly.

Since upgrading to iOS 11 and later to iOS 11.0.1, I’ve noticed there seems to be more of a time lag between touching the screen and hearing the audio.

I’ve been having other issues with my hearing aids though, so I cannot be certain this problem is entirely related to the iOS upgrade. Anyone else having difficulty with the longer lag time?

Hi all,

There does seem some very slight improvement on my iPhone 7, with typing Braille appearing to work better on Braille screen input than it did before for example, but the following still remain:

1. Siri male and female UK voices still become corrupt for no apparent reson causing Voiceover repeatedly to crash to the extent that it's difficult even to power off the phone. A restart will cause the Siri voice to be deleted and it must be downloaded again. This is a really serious bug in my opinion as I struggled even to get hte phone powered off and rebooted.

2. I thought that the old style Siri voices were still meant to be available. the UK ones are called Arthur and Martha. if this is the case, I can't see them and this has not changed with the update.

3. Voiceover will still say "pound sign ten" instead of "ten pounds". Similarly "ten pounds and fifty pence" is still said as "pound sign ten dot five zero". May not be the end of the world for those overseas but if you're dealing in pounds and pence all the time it becomes very anoying.

4. I still find the screen responsiveness when using the UK male and female Siri voices sluggish.

5. Not seen this mentioned elsewhere, but Daniel appears to say "and 4 4" rather than "plus 4 4" when reading telephone numbers. That doesn't happen with the Siri voices. This was the position prior to the update and hasn't changed.

6. I wouldn't go as far as saying that the Voiceover behaviour in the mail app puts me off using the app, but I would say that it is clunky and inconsistent. Perhaps a bit less clunky post-update, but only a bit. The inconsistencies remain.

Overall I'm guessing this update must have been concentrating on bugs other than accessibility ones. My Voiceover experience certainly doesn't differ markedly from that which i had prior to the update. I do wish they would fix the Siri corruption bug! I know I could use another voice and resolve the problem, but that does seem rather unsatisfactory.

Firstly, the iOS US English voices are Aaron and Nikki. second, you can still find them under settings, general, accessibility, voiceover, speech. They are there to be downloaded.
Finally, and most worrying, my problem now is that when selecting a group of messages in mail, when I hit trash, there goes the speech! Now unlike the voices crashing for no reason, when I exit mail, speech does resume. However, it is not letting me delete messages, and the mailboxes are growing fast! This is on an iPhone 8 plus.

While I still fully support Apple products and think that they are the best out there regarding accessibility, I wish they would spend more time on quality instead of rushing to churn out as many different devices as possible by pre-selected dates. In my mind, it would be far better to wait to release these things until more bugs are ironed out than making a big media hype of every new piece of hardware. Let the quality of the products do the talking. Just my thoughts.

I have an IPhone 8 plus and am not seeing your issue. I did do a fresh install though wonder if something was corrupted in a ICloud sync if you didn't set up as a new device?

By sockhopsinger on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

Not necessarily a bad idea. Maybe I'll redo the setup. Good suggestion. Thanks.

By Bingo Little on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

Yes I see that the US English voices are there. Sadly Arthur and martha, the UK English voices, are not. Maybe they're not meant to be, but I thought they were.

Iam not having problems reading notifications on the lock screen. In order for this to work properly, I had to go into Settings > Notifications and set Show Previews to "always". Then, this behaved as it did in iOS 10.

Cordially,

Curtis Chong

Notifications speak from the lock screen only when pressing the unlock button. Raise to wake only gives date.

Hi there. The French France Siri voices have also given me issues, same as those described above with the UK Siri voices. As was mentioned, even powering off the phone was very difficult after I attempted to select that voice from the rotor with French France as my second language. I'll wait to try these again until things improve. Overall I am enjoying iOS 11 and am pleased with what Apple has done with this release.

By sockhopsinger on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

Hmm, just a guess on my part, so it's probably wrong. But maybe your system language has to be set to UK for Arthur and Martha? That's the only reason I can think of, because now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing their names for download either. I'd be curious if some of our UK friends on here could tell us whether Arthur and Martha were present for them as download options.

The older Siri voices are gone with the wind except the US English Siri voices. The reason may be that all the other voices seems to be updated from the original speech data that was recorded for use in previous iOS Versions of Siri. The reason why we can still find the older American English Siri voices is because the female voice was recorded from a new voice talent, but not for the male voice. For this reason, compact Siri voices are mostly a thing of the past.

not sure if anyone else is getting this but I’ve noticed that when ever I read something using Safari the page will automatically refresh after an unknown amount of time with no warning. Not sure if it’s my S a O but has anyone else noticed it?

By David Lai on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

Nope, never seen anything like this. Well, maybe it's because I only read two major websites, Applevis and Wikipedia. :)

By Bingo Little on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

On the point about system language, my language is set to UK English. If the old voices are gone except US English, I wonder why it defaulted to Martha when first I performed the update? Very strange indeed. I have had no repeat of the corruption bug since last I wrote about it, but all the other stuff is still present.

By 780KixxFan on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 09:15

Does anyone know if the UK English (seemed to affect French France also) Siri voices are still corrupt when one attempts to use them with VoiceOver in iOS 11.0.3? Thanks!
