Beware. I just updated to the latest version of YouTube and once you open up a video, there appears to be no way to get out of the playback screen. Previously there was a minimize video option near the top of the screen but it seems to be gone now.

Update. Several workarounds have since been discovered and shared below

At first I thought it was just a random glitch but after checking the app on both my iPad and iPhone and trying multiple videos, I to have noticed that the option to close the video has also disappeared. I just simply stopped using the app for now until YouTube smartens up and fixes the issue. If anyone else is having this issue, please pass along your feedback to YouTube and let them know so they can fix it.

OK, can I just say for a start that saying an app is practicaly useless because you can't do something isn't helpful. You just said that you could get out of the screen by closing and reopening the app, it's a royal pain I agree, and I would like this problem fixed and soon, but some of us have Youtube channels which have to be run, whatever the Youtube update is like, and it can be done.

The thing I wanted to say is, if you're adding videos to playlists it just got more difficult, the add to button is not conveniently situated where it used to be next to the collapse video button, you have to swipe right past everything and it's right at the end. The other annoying thing is once you've added a video to a list it gives me this "See list" dialogue, and unless I see the list and then click the back button there's no way I can see of getting out of it. Adding a video to my playlist for whatever used to take about thirty seconds. Now I'm wrestling with it for a while before it gets done, but it gets done. Hope there's an update soon, that's for sure!

Well, bafflingly, I just went back into the app and the minimize option now seems to have reappeared. I tested this bug out on several videos before posting my original comment just to be sure the issue could be reliably recreated, but now I guess I'll upgrade the bug to intermittent. I'd still avoid this latest update for now though until we can be certain it is resolved

You just have to double tap and hold on the video at the top of the screen and swipe down to minimize the video into the bottom right corner. It just puts the video into picture in picture mode and the video keeps playing. to kill the picture in picture video, double tap and hold the video in the bottom right corner and swipe it to the left. Hope this helps until they put the collapse video button back.

I find I've to watch an entire video before the callapse button appears for me. I'm also having the same crash problem when trying to play a video from a playlist on a channel etc. I can play a video for the most recent list of videos for a channel. I've been having the crash problem for the last two updates of the app. I'm staying positive that the problems will be fixed!

At first, I also noticed that the collapse video button was gone, but it seems to have come back after the last couple of days. I haven't attempted to add a video to a list, but will try it when the next update comes out.

The disappearing collapse video button is an on and off thing for me, it happens on some videos but not others. As someone said, a workaround for now is to double-tap and hold on the video player and drag your finger down. Just beware that unlike the collapse button this will keep the video playing, so if you don't want that make sure to press pause first.

Also, someone mentioned crashing on "saved videos". I can reproduce that one. If you have videos in your watch later queue and try to get to them via the more tab, the app just crashes.

Just figured out how to regain access to the button for minimizing the player. Simply navigate away from the YouTube app by pressing your home button, then switch back to YouTube using the app switcher. This allows you to now minimize the current video. Still not ideal but at least its another temporary solution to add to the list of workarounds folks have been submitting here. Let's all make sure we report this and the saved videos bug to Google. We may want to start a new thread for that issue since it doesn't sound like it is related to the one in this thread. I'll make the subject of this thread more specific as well

I can just open and close the app after playing a video and the minimize button is there. Then each video I watch afterwards has the minumize button.

Try this. From the video player at the top, Flicking to the right ones and double tap to pause the video. Then flick right until the first number that shows the time and double tap on it. The Collapse Button will surely appear. Hope it helps.

I switched to full screen then back and the collapse video button came back.

Update:
I just opened the app to check and the collapse button is gone again. My workaround didn't work this time.

I have the same problem that YouTube app closes to the apps switcher when I try to play from a playlist. Even just moving focus to the list causes the crash.
I've sent lots of bug reports and they never write back.

I will try all temporary solutions to see which one works best.

Has anyone tried the latest version yet?
The current version in the App Store is 12.29 not sure if I should upgrade. Thanks for you're advice ☺️
