Problems with Downcast crashing

Since the iOS 10.2 update I've been experiencing a problem with Downcast crashing.

I navigate to a podcast, double tap using VoiceOver on a podcast to play, and then I am brought back to my home screen.

When I re-open Downcast, Downcast says that it ran into a problem and asks if I want to send an error report.

Next time I try to start playing a podcast after sending the report, it often plays properly, but once in a while I have the same problem occur and have to try a second time.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks for posting this observation. I have only noticed this in the last week or so, but Downcast, which I use at least once a day on average, has been crashing pretty much every time I click on a podcast. After being dumped back to the Home Screen, I double-tap the Home button, close the Downcast app, and try again. It then seems to work. When I re-enter Downcast and it offers to send a crash report to the developer, I always give the OK. Again, thanks for sharing this news. Now, I know it is not something I misconfigured.

Yes I am having similar problems. Can anyone recommend another Ios podcast app? I am currently using Overcast, which is ok, but I do like some of the features of Downcast, like being able to finely customise individual podcasts.

I rarely have this app crash, and I certainly haven't noticed any odd behavior at any point in the last several months. However, I usually play episodes from the playlist screen, where I have all downloaded episodes appear in a single list. I don't usually play episodes from the podcast menu directly. Perhaps that is why I haven't encountered the issue.

Downcast used to receive regular updates, but that stopped about a year ago, and I suspect that the popularity of Overcast may have been a contributing factor. I would consider Overcast, except that I have some video podcasts, which Overcast does not support. I also have gotten used to the Downcast interface over the years and don't feel like adjusting to a new app interface unless I have to.

If you are not seeing the problem, I wonder what version of iOS you are using and if you are using VoiceOver.

I use VoiceOver and am running the latest iOS version 10.3.1 on an iPhone 6 and almost always see the problem whether I start a podcast from the podcast folder itself or from the Playlist containing all of my podcasts.

I am using the latest version of iOS, 10.3.1, with VoiceOver.

My device is an iPad Mini 4, so perhaps the fact that I am using an iPad instead of an iPhone may explain the difference. Either that or there's a setting that I have different from others which is preventing the issue.

I've also had this issue occurring several times in a day and have reported it to the app developer. I have noticed that when playing the podcasts from a playlist, the app doesn't seem to crash. It only happens when starting a podcast from the Podcast tab. One other glitch I've noticed too is when going to my playlist and starting to play the first episode, if I lock my phone and unlock it a while later, I find myself back at the home screen instead of being in Downcast. If I playback, lock the screen and then unlock it a minute later, it seems to be fine, but anymore then a few minutes, and I'm back to the homescreen.

I really hope that the developer is able to correct this as I do not want to change podcast apps, I've grown to love this one and would hate to have to change.

As an alternative why not consider the native podcast app, what can you say about the Usability of the app and how it differs from other podcast app

Yes, for many years I had used the native podcast app that comes with iOS. I was quite happy with it.

Several friends kept suggesting that I should try the Downcast app and that I would really enjoy it. Since I was happy with the native iOS podcast app, I resisted getting the Downcast app for about a year or so.

Finally, after my friends kept insisting that I should try the Downcast app I broke down and downloaded it.

The result? What an amazing app Downcast is! I really enjoy this app and it is much superior to the native iOS podcast app. Downcast not only lets you set up playlists, but makes it extremely easy to organize and deal with many, many podcast subscriptions at a time. The app is very configurable with many custom settings for each podcast subscription. Despite the amount of customization that is possible, the UI is extremely clean and intuitive to work with.

Overall Downcast is a great app except for this recent problem. I hope they can rec rectify it soon.

I have not experienced any issues either, in 10.2, or 10.3.1.
But you guys are correct, it does need an update. The developer has said he is still working on finishing it on Twitter.

I am also running iOS 10.3.1 on an iPhone 7 using VoiceOver and have not experienced this problem with Downcast. For those of you who are experiencing it, it sounds very annoying, so hope it gets resolved soon.

I like Downcast's customizable settings, and I am waiting and looking forward to the update. However, I also started to really like the Overcast interface.
