Threema. The Secure Messenger

Description of App

Threema is the world’s favorite secure messenger and keeps your data out of the hands of hackers, corporations and governments. Threema can be used completely anonymously, and offers a rich set of features.

HIGHEST ENCRYPTION STRENGTH
Threema encrypts ALL your communications END-TO-END including messages, group chats, media files and even status messages. You can rest assured that only the intended recipient can read your chats, and nobody else – not even us. Threema uses the trusted open source NaCl cryptography library for encryption. The encryption keys are generated and safely stored on user’s devices to prevent backdoor access or copies.

GUARANTEED PRIVACY
Threema is designed to generate as little data on servers as possible – this is a core part of our concept. Group memberships and contact lists are managed on your device only, and never stored on our servers. Messages are immediately deleted after they have been delivered. Local files are stored encrypted on your mobile phone or tablet. All this effectively prevents the collection and misuse of your personal information, including meta data.

COMPREHENSIVE FEATURES
Threema is not only an encrypted and private messenger but also versatile and feature-rich.

• write text and send voice messages
• share videos, pictures and locations
• send any type of file (pdf, animated gif, mp3, doc, zip, etc.)
• create groups
• conduct polls with the unique poll feature
• choose between a dark and a light theme
• quickly and silently reply with the unique agree/disagree feature
• verify the identity of a contact by scanning their personal QR code
• use Threema as anonymous instant messaging tool
• synchronize your contacts (optional)

FULL ANONYMITY
Each Threema user receives a random Threema ID for identification. A phone number or email address is not required to use Threema. This unique feature allows you to use Threema completely anonymously – no need to give up private information or to open an account.

TRUSTED CONTACTS
We let users confirm trusted contacts with a QR code or a key fingerprint to prevent man in the middle attacks.

INDEPENDENT COMPANY
We are a 100% independent and self-financed company in the heart of Switzerland with its own servers and in-house software development. Switzerland is a country with some of the most user friendly privacy laws in the world.

Other Comments

I really love the sound of this app. If you want to contact me let me know and I'll give you my threema ID. I also love the fact that only the admin of the group can add or remove people. The devs are responsive and there are updates every week so it seems. There are in app purchases but I don't know what they are yet.

This app is perfect! I think it's much better than Roger. AnonyMouse convinced me to buy Threema, and I am so glad I did! It's like apple messages combined with Roger and made this ultra awesome app! It's extremely secure, you can send and receive voice or text messages, you can be part of the groups that are created, and if you want to know more, just listen to the podcast because Thomas Domville explains everything. If you, like me, or morning the inevitable loss of Roger, Threema will definitely fill that void!

Just curious, if you backup your phone regularly, does that include the backing up of your threema ID?

Or do you actually have to use that backup button.

I would probably use it anyway, just to be sure, but it also doesn't hurt to ask.

I probably won't get this for a while, since I don't socialise that much, unless you can do public groups like roger use to do.

There would need to be a mute option for those times where you don't want to be disturbed, but I guess if you can mute a conversation, you could do the same for groups.

I just did a podcast on this app for my own podcast, I did not discuss back ups but yes you can back up your ID to iCloud. You can do groups like roger, except they are limited to 50 slots, I hope they will consider raising that number at some point unless there's an in app purchase for group owners. Public groups are not a good idea as we had people just add random people and it turned into a mess, so I like it this way better. You can also update files, in my podcast I compaird it to an accessilbe version of slack.

waht I didn't say is threema web will soon be able to be used on all platforms except you have to scan a QR code. I hate that as I can't do this, not well.

I wish threema would let me optionally sync my fb google and twitter friends I think it would be cool if you could imput that information if you wanted and if threema saw that on your profiles if you gave it access you could add those people to threema. the same way it does adding contacts.

Because this is a secure app, I don't think this will and should happen. What I would do is import yoru facebook friends into yoru contcts via their email addresses, you can actually do this I think, then go from there.

After listening to the podcast demonstration, I decided to purchase Threema. And I’ve been very happy with it so far! I give a big hats off to the developers for making it fully accessible. I’m also not a fan of the messaging apps that just work with your phone number, and I love how Threema isn’t like that. If anyone would like to add me, feel free to hit me up in a reply. And I’ll be happy to give you my ID.

I really love Threema, I've used it for years now, and I can say that I'm really impresed, especially by its accessibility, the developers seem to care, this app also has the features I need, it's packed with the most important things, but it's not overloaded. I strongly recommend Threema messenger for those who want a nice, and accessible app that's made for talking in a first place, and for privacy, not loaded with some stupid things like inaccessible graphics, games etc. at least it fulfils my needs, it's a simple, easy to use app. Just amazing!

Hi, can you choose your own message tone sound from a tone on your phone?
