lire: RSS Reader

Category

Description of App

Love RSS feeds? So do we!!

RSS feeds are a great way to follow updates on your favorite website. However, some sites set up their feeds to only show a portion of each entry, you know, to get you to click through to their actual website. We find that really annoying, and we're sure you do too.

Which is why, unlike other RSS feed readers, that either push you into a browser (in-app or otherwise), or depend on third party text parsing services and require you to be online to fetch the full text of one article at a time (which makes it no different from having to click/tap through to a website), in lire, you get your favorite RSS feeds as they should've been. You don't need to click through to any website (though, you do still have the option to, if you really wanted). It takes your favorite partial feeds, does it's magic, and converts them in to full feeds, so you don't have to click/tap on those annoying 'Read more' or 'Continue reading' links.

Once they're cached, you don't even need to be connected to read your full-text feeds.

Use as a standalone feed reader,

or,

sync with any of the several services: Feedly, Feedbin, FeedHQ, The Old Reader, Inoreader, BazQux Reader, Newsblur, Feed Wrangler.

Other Comments

This is my favourite app for managing feeds. First of all, you can read the articles also offline, because the app retrieves all full text of a feed. this is the most comfortable service I know about this kind of app. Second, it run as a standalone app, managing feeds without need of third party app. Anyway, from version 2.0 it supports Feedly and many other third party services. If necessary, you can convert the article in ebook format, or share also with evernote, and obviously with main social networks and services. Anyway, when you read an article, you have only the text, because the app has cached it, so no images, no ads or links, just all the complete article.
And finally, if there is a difficult feed to parse and text is not available, you can use Mercury service that process text and formats it well for you.

Hi all, wondering if someone knows the answer to this,
I have one rss feed added to lira, what I want is to get notifications whenever the feed is updated like you get push notifications with emails and other apps.
I have the background app refresh enable in lire for the feed and background app refresh on in settings.
However despite this lire never seems to refresh unless I actually launch the app.
any ideas? I am running this on a 6s plus running ios 9.1.
I also have it set to enable notifications for lira under notification settings.

So far, I'm liking this app better than BWRSS and Newsify.

I'm thinking about purchasing this app. Does it still work with iOS 10? It hasn't been updated in over a year.

Hey Chris,

Yes, it still works just fine under iOS 10. As the matter of fact the developer is currently working on a new major release. So hope to see this soon.

Hello, yes Lire is still working and don't worry, 3.0 is almost ready.

I use Lire everyday, but as from last week, whenever I launch Lire, I'm always presented with an error message: no API found. As a result of this, I've switched to 'Newsify'.

Hello,

How do I view my list of articles grouped by feed? I imported an OPML file with my feeds from Vienna on my Mac. However, I just get this extremely long list of articles that is called all articles. I'd rather have them grouped by the feed name and then drill down to view the individual entries per feed. How do I do this? While I'm talking about feeds, it seems like the list of all articles is sorted from oldest to newest even though I checked the option in the settings to show newest first. What am I missing. Aside from these issues, I love this app. However, if I can't figure it out, this will be pretty much useless with all these entries scattered around.

Try to look for subscriptions in the app main screen .. there you go and do have fun!

By Chris on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 - 21:05

I figured out the feed issue. There is an item in the main screen called subscriptions. I passed it because I thought it was a heading of text. NOw I feel like an idiot. heh!

As expected, this major update takes accessibility quite seriously as well as offering a wide range of enhancements everywhere.

Is anybody else encountering problems with lire 3 not automatically refreshing feeds in the background?

I have tried everything that I can think of - toggling all of the relevant app and iOS settings; hard restarting my phone; killing the app in the App Switcher; deleting and reinstalling the app - but still have to manually refresh feeds nearly every time that I go to the app.

There is so much that I like about this app, but this problem is driving me somewhat crazy … and possibly back to Feeddler.

By alex wallis on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 - 21:05

Hi, I have a question about refreshing feeds, basically I want when lire refreshes a feed in the background automatically to be notified when this happens, I understand that this is possible.
However what I would like to know is if I disable caching of text and images does this effectively mean that I won't get notifications when the background app refresh fetches new content? basically I have no interest in storing articles for any length of time its mostly to know when new things are posted to the feed that is important, I also always have an internet connection available so offline reading isn't important to me.
Of course if I need text caching to be on for notifications of background app refresh to work then I will turn it back on.
also, I assume that starring an article means that it won't be purged after a day if I have read it which is what I now have set so that anything I read is automatically deleted after a day.

I read lots of Dreamwidth blogs which require me to login before displaying the RSS feed. Has anyone done this successfully?

By lelia on Friday, February 24, 2017 - 21:05

With this new update, when I try adding subscriptions it gets me to either Google or being. How do I add subscription now? Thank you

Why I can't subscribe to applevis using Lire. It does not give an article automatically

By Xandross on Monday, July 24, 2017 - 21:05

Using version 3.0.18 of the app, can someone please tell me the correct way to search for feeds?

At the moment, when I do any kind of search be it URL or specific words, all I get is the Google and Bing results, nothing else.

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but can't for the life of me work out what it is! Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hi all.
Could someone with latest experience with lire and feeddler rss reader pro 2 tell us how they compare? I need to buy an rss reader but I’m torn between the two. I don’t care about the price.
Who is the winner? Lire full text rss or feeddler rss reader pro 2?
Cheers.)

Hi, I can't really say anything about Feedler Pro as I never used it, but I myself do use Lire and love it.

Hi! I bought the app. today hoping to get notifications as well. It was the reason why I bought the app. I am in the same situation as you. Did you ever get them working? If so, what did you or anybody reading this do? I realize this post is a couple years old but it's worth a shot. Maybe I will get a answer from somebody.

By KE8UPE on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 - 21:05

Hi,
I previously bought lire, & loved it!
It doesn’t make sense to me, why the new version, would be a separate app. However, I am seriously thinking of purchasing it.
For those who have already bought the new version, what do you think of it? How does it compare to the previous version?
Is it worth the cost?

After updating my iPhone 7 to iOs 14.5 I can not download full text for any articles. Every attempt ends with a timeout error and a message saying unable to download full text.

This worked fine before updating to iOs 14.5 and has not worked afterwards, including several hard closes of Lire and rebooting my iPhone.

Is anyone else able to download full text with iOs 14.5 and Lire?
