Nearby explorer uses on board maps to do just about everything. If you are in the US or Canada that will work

Nearby explorer is great! Also plays very nice with listening to music or doing other things while driving or walking. I highly like it and recommend it!

If you're really trying to find an actual mailbox, GPS won't get you all that close. In my area, average accuracy is 33 feet in any direction.
The compass app on the phone is good for keeping a straight line. That's what I use most.
Ariadne GPS has both a compass and the ability to add a "favorite" and track your approach to it. It's affordable.
"Over There" allows you to add a "sign" and it tells you when you're pointed at it and how far away it is. Free.
Navigon uses onboard maps for city travel. Overkill for finding your box or even the post office. Mainly for turn-by-turn directions, vehicular or pedestrian.

I agree with the previous poster. GPS will not work for finding mail boxes, even if you're accuracy is great. Do you live in a house? Apartment? whatever the case may be, if it's a house, most boxes are found at the end of the driveway facing the street if you are in a city.
