Swiping gestures are not working.

Hi all:

I own an iPhone 5s and I'm using the latest version of iOS. I am no longer able to archive or delete email messages, messages from Facebook Messenger or anything else by swiping up or down. These gestures now take me to the previous or next element on my screen. I corrected this problem once before by performing a soft reset of my phone. However, that didn't work this time. How can I correct this problem? I would rather not do a complete reset of my phone because I don't want to have to reenter my contacts and reinstall all my apps. Any help you guys could give would be much appreciated.
