I saw on another list that there was a new ios version 10.1.1 but with a different build number that was released today. This update was not an over the air update but can only be updated via ITunes. I opened up ITunes and sure enough what I read was correct. There is also no change log for this version. Anyone know what this is all about?

This seems odd I wouldn't trust it.

I think you should all google the new version of the update and see what it is all about. Usually iOS updates are signed by Apple, not any other company. If the update wasn't signed by Apple, it might be a spam or some kind of malware that I wouldn't install.

I don't like updating through ITunes but I'll do it only when it's absolutely necessary. I've never seen an update where u couldn't update over the air; I'll investigate.

Sarah, you're probably right but I'll wait to see if I can do it without ITunes. If I have to do it, I will. As inaccessible is ITunes is now, I have trouble doing most anything.

I saw that somebody had posted about this update on Twitter. However, when I went to the updates area on my phone, it said that my software was up-to-date. Therefore, in case this update is malicious, I'm not getting it until I have more information.

From what I've heard, this update fixes installation issues. It seems to be very minor. I won't bother connecting to iTunes and downloading 2 GB of data just to update my phone. I only use iTunes to do clean installs of the operating system when new major versions of iOS come out. Will this be included in the 10.2 update? If so, I'll get it along with everything else in 10.2 when that is released.

As I said in my previous post, the update would be malicious if it was signed by an unknown publisher. This update is signed by Apple. Apple usually checks the code before they release any software updates. Also, any iOS updates should have security features. There might be an article on http://9to5Mac.com about the iOS update. Maybe you should check that site to get more information.

If you already updated to 10.1, this patch is a single issue fix for a problem with unavailable/lost health data in the Health App etc that was caused by the previous update. It's so large (220MB) because it also includes all the more critical fixes for people upgrading from 10.0.

I'd contact Apple to double-check before installing. Im not saying anything's wrong, but it's better to be safe than sorry in my humble opinion. I'm not saying be super paranoid, but j'ust contact Apple's tech support. If it was truly them that released an update, they'd tell you yay or nay. Maybe give you a little emplanation as to exactly what this update if for.? Who knows. But like I said before, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Until reading this post, I hadn't heard about this update.

From what the Apple support rep told me, if you already have 10.1.1, you don't need to worry about this update. This build fixes installation issues for some devices that crashed upon installing the 10.1.1 update originally. If you already updated to 10.1.1, this update has no relevance. If you haven't updated to 10.1.1 yet, this is the version you will get and your device should not potentially crash upon installation. That's all this is.
P.S. This crash was definitely a real problem; I've already had to recover one fellow co-worker's iPhone because of it.
