I am a parent with vision loss and I use some apps to help me with things around the house like tap tap see. Just wondering about other useful apps that visually impaired parents might find helpful.
Hi! In relations to having small kids, Baby monitor 3G is a great app! It let's you monitor your baby while sleeping, either by sound or video. It will let you hear your baby crying when he/she has waken up. It wasn't accessible a year ago, but I have emailed a bit back and forth with the developer to make it accessible, and now I can say that this app works great with VO!
You will need a spear phone or iPad though to set up the app on to monitor the child where it's sleeping.

What are you trying to do? How old are the kids? I ask because I am not sure if you are looking for apps to help you, your kids or both.
If you have little ones, you can get Green Eggs and Ham from the app store and let them go through it. If they’re a little older, they can do something more interactive like Life of a Wizard or Choice of a Robot. IF they have an IOS device and you want to control access, you can use Our Pack.
If you want to help them with their reading homework, you can try KNFB reader. As long as it’s typed and not hand written, you should get good results. You can also try Seeing Goggles. This app is kind of useful as it sometimes recognizes famous landmarks. If you’re in the US, you can also sign up for BARD and download books your kids are reading so you have an idea of what it is they’re reading and discuss it with them.

I started prototyping an app that would let you go through all the text in a kids book, page by page with VO. It worked pretty well (using it with a bluetooth earbud), had a few kinks, but I'm not sure it would be something generally useful to others. Have others struggled with the same frustration? If I were to go forward with the app, I would probably create an online database where users could submit childrens' books transcriptions and let the user scan a book barcode to bring up the transcription if available.
Aside from that issue, are there other visually impaired parent apps you wish existed?
