My VoiceOver voice suddenly switched from Daniel enhanced to Daniel default and I can't change it back?

This has happened in the past but I am extremely confused. My phone was on, and I was using it and it suddenly switched. I am very confused, and I would really like to change the voice back as it's my favourite one.

Can someone explain this, has it happened to anyone else? And is there a fix?

Which iOS vversion are you using? you didn't mention that, and with Apple's new way of changing and re-downloading voices we'd need to know so we can give you the right directions. in iOS 10 it's a bit different than iOS 9.

I was using a standard voice on iOS 10.0.2 and the phone switched to the enhanced voice.

I do not like the enhanced voice so I tried to select the standard one, nothing happened. It kept the same enhanced voice regardlless of the button selected between the two voices. The only thing I did that switched back to thhe standard voice was deleting the enhanced one, whichh I did not download to begin with so it downloaded by itself without nobody asking for the download.

So I have to ask...why do people not like the enhanced voices? To me, all the compact voices sound, well, compact. Squishy. Not fully formed. Fuzzy. The enhanced voices are more full, ritch, and more human. I guess some people just prefer their screenreader voices to be more, well, synthetic, and that's ok. no right or wrong answer, but it is interesting how some people prefer compact, and others need to have enhanced or it drives them bananas. I prefer the enhanced myself, probably because that's what I started out with when I first got an iDevice.

I'm on iOS 10.0 sorry I forgot that.

I had the same problem, with the same voice on the same iOS version. The only way I could get it to work was to delete the Daniel enhanced voice, temporarily switch to a different voice and then redownload Daniel and switch back.

I love the enhanced voices, the default ones just make me go bananas like you say. Good news, I've managed to get the voice back woo!!

To me enhanced seems to be better at normal speeds and compact seems to sound better at faster speeds. My normal speed is set to 100 so I like the compact voice better. This is just me though.

The enhanced voices are extremely bugged in terms of pronounce for Brazilian portuguese. They also sound very worse when at fast rates and I am ** proudly * a JAWS long time user so I am used to very fast rate voices because I need to keep productive so for me the standard voices are better faster and have less pronounce bugs ... so this is why I am using it.

Hi, Well, everyones got their own style of screen reading, and as @tunehead mentioned, everyones got their own styles of their prefered screen reading voice. For me, I use fred as my default voice. he sounds cool, and he is easy to understand. What I love about fred is that he can actually say SHHH and PSST sounds very well. When I tested the public beta and tryed out fred, I felt excited that he is now on iOS, now, I use him as my default voice for the mac and for iOS with the default rate for the mac at 40% and for iOS it's at 50% (default rate). The only thing I wish iOS would have is the funny voices such as Bad News, Ralf, princess, etc (probably not, as apple doesn't have enough room to fit extra voices). overall, I'm a happy camper.

I definitly Like the enhanced voices they sound human, and are really expressive. the compact ones sound like tunehead stated squished and nazel to my ears.

Tunehead's description on the compact voices or default are exactly how I would describe the enhanced voices; I only use the Samantha voice. It makes me wonder if there is something fishy going on. On my phone, the Samantha enhanced has a very fuzzy background sound when she speaks, a little like a radio that is tuned a little off or a bad recording. The default is very clear and human-like. I've checked and I am definitely using Samantha default.

Anyway, I'm just thankful we are able to choose between the voices we like, instead of only having a single voice for VO.

Fred isn't bad, but he's a bit on the quiet side, even when you crank up the volume, this includes the voiceover volume from the rotor.

Hmmm, just noticed my phone has the Daniel enhanced voice, and he does sound a lot better than the default Daniel. I guess it's just the enhanced Samantha that is fuzzy sounding.

Fred reminds me a little of the computer voices from back in the 80s. I agree, he is a little low in the volume.

agreed! Fred isn't that bad, and I have the volume set to 100% and it sounds grate.

I tried every voice. For the 1st few months I had my ipad mini 4, i used Samantha enhanced. She was ok but had some quirks of her own like sometimes going from loud to soft as well as some pronunciations. I didn't know there were different voices to choose from! After I got ios 10 & had been using it for a while I finally gave into temptation & strated playing around with the voices. Needless to say, I downloaded pretty much all of them. The ones I was torn between I kept. Finally, I decided that I would give Ava a try. I tried jhe default 1st & wasn't very happy. I tried the enhanced & picked that immediately & decided to give her a trial run for a few days. Needless to say, I now use Ava enhanced as my regular voice. I still keep Samantha on there just in caie I need to switch back if there is any issues. My parents crack on Ava all the time! She suonds more human & less robotic than some of the other voices I've heard using TTS. over the years. The only caveat I have with Ava is how much space she takes up. But you win some you lose some! I'm kind of used to robotic voices such as in JAWS., But I wish that they were more human because there've been times where I just cannot make out what there saying despite my eferts. It drives me up the wall!

Daniel default sounds pretty human to me. Daniel enhanced however, sounds like someone with a sore throat. To me, it sounds like he could use a nice throat clearing.

Hello,
you should restart your phone first, then it will turn out that the enhanced voice is not downloaded. So, download it again, and it will no longer cause problems.
The same problem happened to me on iOS 10.0.1 and the reason was because Voiceover came across some text in another language, and the voice of that language was default, and the English Voice Daniel enhanced, switched to default right away. After downloading the enhanced voice again, the problem didn't occur anymore.

I'm from Hong Kong and using Cantonese (Chinese Hong Kong).
The same problem occurs on my iPhone SE with iOS 10.0.2. I should adequately say that the problem occurs every 2 days!
All I need to do is that I have to "delete" my selected premium voice and download it via wi-fi every time.
It's very very very very annoying!!!
It's extremely disappointed to see that accessibility is obviously getting worse after passing of Steve Jobs.

Recently, the enhanced bersion switched to the default on a couple of occasions since installing iOS 10.0.2 on my iPhone 6S though not a problem as I simply redownloaded Daniel enhanced.

Another bug perhaps?

I restarted the phone to download the premium one at my first time. But as mentioned, that was only the first time...
