A short self intro and a question about software update

iOS and iPadOS

Hi all, I'm David Lai, a fully blind person from China and I'm now using an iPhone SE with the language set to English. I've been reading contents on the Applevis site for some time now, and I enjoy everything on here. Thanks for making my learning curve to the iPhone shorter and more enjoyable!
I have a question, and I hope you guys don't mind me asking. I've heard that iOS 10 will be out soon, and I wonder, can my iPhone SE support the system? If so, here's my next question. do you suggest running Software Update on the phone or use iTunes to update on the computer? Also, should I make my device go into DFU mode in order to update to the new iOS when using iTunes? I have a PC running Windows, just so you know.
Many thanks for answering!

Hi. Welcome! Over the air updates are what I normally use. iTunes gives you speech during the update process though. The Se and all the iPhone 5 models can support iOS 10. All the new phones can run 10 on them, like I said anything from the 5 to the new 7 can run iOS 10. Theres no need to use DFU mode to update the phone. Thats only if something screws up the software. The easiest is to go into general under settings, select the software update and go from there.
Hah and good luck.

Hi. Just to add to what's already been said, I always use over-the-air updates, you will see some people on here and on other internet sites referring to it simply as OTA. Anyways, please keep in mind that if you update over-the-air, your iPhone will go silent for a time, possibly anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, so please please do not be alarmed if your phone goes silent. You haven't broken it and nothing is wrong. the best advice I have is to go make yourself a snack or something while the install happens and just walk away from your phone for a few. You'll know the installation is complete when VoiceOver comes back up again. You may encounter a language screen, The phone displays the word "hello" in many different languages, and the best way that I know of is to keep swiping back and forth until you hear hello, followed by the phrase, slide to set up, or something similar, this may have changed in iOS 10. When you hear, slide to set up, this actually means that you would double-tap on that element there, and you can just follow the prompts through the setup screens. If you're really lucky you won't have to deal with that, though. Some iOS updates don't present this hello screen. Either way, I really hope this helps you're update experience!

Thanks, Justin, for your reply! I'm happy that I don't need to hunt for a 6 or 6S! Thanks for assuring me on that!
Then, allow me another two questions:
1. I've heard from friends that the system might slow the device down because of files supposedly "damaged" during the update process. I guess they ment "file fragments"? Does what they say hold water?
2. Since I've only used the iPhone for five months, and have got accustomed to iOS 9.X, I feel a bit nervous about the changes in the upcoming 10. Are there some things I may need to get used to in the new system? I hope I can still know my way around in the new iOS!
That's all. Thank you very much!

Hi, glad to help! Just to answer your question about file fragments I've never heard of that, so I wouldn't even worry about that. As for learning the new iOS it is very similar, just remember to keep VoiceOver hints turned on and you'll be just fine.

If you are worried about damaged files, consider reading this article before updating. It explains how to remove "other" data from iOS devices: http://www.imore.com/how-find-and-remove-other-files-iphone-and-ipad You should be able to navigate the new interface using voiceover in iOS 10. You can also ask a sighted person for more assistance. Hope this helps.
