Although I do not think I want to upgrade to an iPhone 7, I want the better audio experience that comes with the lightning earpods. Does someone know, if I buy the lightning earpods, will they work with my 6S? In fact, will the airpods work with my 6s? Thanks!

I'd like to know the answer to the question above myself. I really love the sound of these new airpod. But whether or not they work with the current iPhone is a mystery. I would honestly hope that they do!
I have asked Apple the same thing.
When, and if, I get a response, I will let everyone know. Personally, while it sounds good, I don't want wireless earbuds with only 5 hours at a charge. I sure will not pay $160 for them. The wired option, on the other hand, has possibilities.

I don't recall where I read it, but I read something that indicated the new earpods would work with older hardware, but they require iOS 10, so you'll have to wait for that to be released and the device will have to support it.
W1 Chip

Yeah, it’s confusing. I read they are suppose to have a W1 Chip thus they will no longer need to be paired like the BT headsets. I also read the battery life is about 20 hours. Beats will also be selling headset with the W1 chip from 150 to 300 USD>
The W1 chip is still Bluetooth so I suspect it will also work with older devices.

I always upgrade to the latest IOS anyway. I suspect what's going to happen is air pods won't work, but the lightning earpods will.

According to the Daily Tech News Show podcast, the 5 hours number is talk time. Playback is over 20 hours. Further, the new Air Pods are essentially blue tooth, with some added magic. They will work with any blue tooth device, but, work better and seamlessly with Apple stuff.

I'll be interested to see if any high quality lightning to 3.5 jack dongles come out. I would use one to improve the connection between my iPod 6 and my main listening stereo. A better DASC is usually a good thing.
The lightning ear pods would interest me if I liked ear pods. I prefer on or over the ear headphones.\

The 7 will come with this adapter so you can use your 3.5 mil stuff.

The Lightning will work
Acording to all reports I read so far the Lightning Earpods will work with older devices like the 6, 6s and iPads with Lightning connectors. Of course nobody knows for sure yet because nobody have them to try yet.
W1 still has lag
Based on below excerpt, latency in w1 chip is less than most Bluetooth, but latency /= 0 ms | /= Wired connection.
