Apple Beta Releases

hello to all running the iOS 10 public beta,
at the risk of violating my NDA, I won't discuss any info that apple did not make public, unless I am allowed to do so by Applevis. first off, their is a new pronouncation dictionary in VoiceOver. theirs new predictive audocorrection features, Siri is a hole lot better, and there is lots of new things like Siri being openned up to developers, and iMessage apps, and that also being open to developers.. what do you all think of the new developments in iOS? also, in the notes before posting, it says to not post any information about beta software. I reasently read on the Applevis blog, that this policy has changed? can you provide examples of what we can freely discuss about the beta, and what we cannot?

Your Feedback is Important to Improving Accessibility on Apple platforms

Don't assume that Apple is aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference - submitting bug reports directly to the company helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. Your report may provide crucial information. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority they give to fixing the bug.

If you're using a beta version, use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you're using a public release, follow the instructions on this page.

it would be helpful for all of us, esspecially running the iOS 10 public beta if you can clarify and give examples of where we can go with iOS 10 beta discusssion and where we can't? this is my first post on the Apple Vis forum, so if I am doing something wrong, please tell me.

By Daniel Angus M… on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

thank you, the AppleVis Editorial Team for clarifying beta testing, and what we can duscuss or not. I just don't want to violate the NDA, or have others do so because of me. Thank you, I appreciate the prompd response.

So far I'm loving the iOS 10 public beta. One thing I can't figure out in message is digital touch. I think it may be accessible with VO, but i haven't messed with it a lot.

I would like to try the beta, but the last one I tried messed up my phone royally. It's my only device. I suppose I could backup in ITunes and restore. I do have a backup that's a few weeks old. Comments are appreciated. I'm not sure how to get the beta but I will search it.

By HarmonicaPlayer on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

that sucks that the ipod fifth gen can't do the beta but iPhone 5 can:P what a bummer:( :(

By Piotr Machacz on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

The iPod 5's hardware isn't in the same class as the iPhone 5. iPod 5 has specifications comparable to iPhone 4s or the original iPad mini and neither of those devices are getting iOS 10.

I've been running the beta for a while now and have to say it's a very good update, even before apps take advantage of the new Siri and VOIP api's. THere's a lot of good stuff for VoiceOver users as well.

You can sign up for the apple beta software program at http://beta.apple.com. If you would like to downgrade back to iOS 9, there are some instructions on how to do that within the website. First, you have to click on the link that says "unenroll." Then follow the instructions on how to downgrade back to iOS 9.

I am running the iOS 10 beta on an old iPad Air, but I am keeping iOS 9 on my newer iPad Mini 4. As much as I am liking the new features, this beta is definitely not stable enough for use on a primary device.

My advice is that, if you have more than one device and want to try out the beta, go ahead and install it on whichever device you use less often, so that if things go wrong you will not be too inconvenienced. Whichever device is your daily driver should not be upgraded until the software comes out of beta in September. If you only have one iOS device, I strongly recommend staying out of the beta program, because going back to an earlier version of iOS is a hassle, even if you follow Apple's advice and make an archived backup before upgrading.

I am not sure I understand the new guidelines. If the only thing we can share is, how good the betas are, or how bad they are this is of no use when testing and reportingbugs to Apple. If we can share bugs before just sending them off through feedback we would make the VO feedback in the beta much better for Apple.

I was looking on the Apple beta page, and it mentions doing an iTunes backup, and then archiving it. I was able to make a backup of iTunes on my pc, remember folks I'm running Windows 10 here. I was able to back up my iDevices, but there does not seem to be an archive backup option. So, if I were to eventually try the public beta, what are Windows users to do in this case? If something goes wrong do we just restore from an iTunes or iCloud backup? I'm pretty good about backups, so that's not a problem. However, apple specificly mentions archiving a backup, so I'll need a bit of clarification on that before I proceed. Thanks!

Hi,
I read on one of the blog posts about a new accessibility feature in iOS 10 that allows the user to root voiceover through one device and the rest of the sounds such as music or media through another device. Am I understanding this correctly? If so, how can I enable this feature? I'm running the latest apple iOS 10 beta on a 128 gb iPhone 6, and I have a bose color sound link bluetooth speaker. So if I understand correctly, I should be able to root voiceover to play through the phone's internal speaker and have music play through the sound link. I think it's operator error on my part, but I'm not seeing any settings like this under sounds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is within the topic for Applevis.
Thanks in advance,
Moop

I decided to try the beta on an old 16 gig iPhone 5. However, the home button only works when it feels like it. This is not due to the beta. I am getting no responses from Siri. I do have "hey Siri" turned on. How responsive are other testers finding Siri? It works perfectly on my iPhone 6 that is still running firmware 9.3.2.

By Lielle ben simon on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

Siri works grate on my iPhone 6 16 gb, ios 10 publick beta 1

By Callum Stoneman on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

So far, the beta is great. I haven't had time to play around with all the features yet, but VO and the whole operating system seems pretty stable to me to say it's beta software. I also love that you can get more voices now.

One thing I'm really having trouble with though is submitting feedback through the feedback assistant. I've made sure everything on the feedback form is filled out but it just stays in my outbox either saying uploading or upload failed, tap to retry. One piece of feedback I submitted this morning says uploading every time I check feedback, which would mean it's been uploading constantly for the last hour! Now I know feedback assistant gathers some log files as well, but I highly doubt they're that big. My wifi connection is fine and everything else works great, apart from this. Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

I have an iPhone 6s P and an iPad Air. Although I didn't try iOS 10 beta on my device, I like the new iMessage very much.Messages has other visual enhancements, including rich links and in-line video and Apple Music playback, as well as bubble effects, full-screen effects, handwritten messages, Digital Touch interactive greeting cards, Tap Back for quickly responding to a text, and Invisible Ink that you can swipe away to reveal a message or photo.

By dvdmth on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

To the one who asked about VoiceOver audio routing in iOS 10, that feature is not part of the current beta. Remember that not all features announced by Apple are included in the beta, since they may not be done yet.

I am loving the IOS 10 Beta. Works great on my end.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

How the iOS beta works with Bluetooth headset?

By Siobhan on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

Hi all. iMessage on the older 9.3 operating system is slow to start if at all, when raise to listen is enabled. Is this problem at all fixed in IOS 10? Thanks.

By Brian Giles on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I love the beta for the most part, but can anyone offer basic tips on how to report things to Apple with the feedback assistant that's included? I've noticed some odd quirks which I probably can't get into here, but I can't reproduce them consistantly. iPhone SE 64 gig here...

By Piotr Machacz on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

The way I report bugs to Apple is the way that most bug tracker forms ask for them. This certainly isn't the only way, but here's an example (this is not an actual iOS 10 bug) Let's say double-tapping just stopped working for you. When you go to file the feedback, you obviously want to select that the bug is related to VoiceOver, and in the summary you explain the bug in one sentence (Double-tapping is not working). In the detailed description I split my report up into 3 basic sections:

  • Steps to reproduce: You outline where to go and what to do to cause the bug to happen.. In the double-tapping example you might say "Turn on VoiceOver, focus any element that can be activated like a button, and tap the screen twice with 1 finger."
  • Expected result: Explain what's supposed to happen IE "VoiceOver should cause the focused control to be activated"
  • Actual result: What happens instead "VoiceOver stays quiet and doesn't activate the control"

Below those if I have additional information that might be important, I outline it. In this case, if you have the hardware you should test if the bug effects just the screen or also keyboard and braille display commands to double-tap something, and write down your findings.

HTH

No offense, friends, but just saying, "it works great" doesn't tell us anything about your experience with VO on iOS 10. For those of us with only one device and not running the beta, may I ask that you be more specific? What about it is great? Are there any apps or features that are more accessible than before? How responsive is VO? What new things can VO do? Thanks kindly, fellow AppleVizzers

By Daniel Angus M… on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

so, to submit bugs to apple, use the feedback app and select compose or new problem report. then fill out the information, and submit. you have to do lots of navagation, as the feedback app and VoiceOver are not so polished, as one would expect.

By Troy on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

From what I've heard ios10 will free up more space for those of us who are running 16 gig phones. I haven't tried it to know as my secondary device is a 5th gen ipod

By Raul on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I see many people using the public betas. I hope they file every bug they find. I'm planing to try it myself but I have only one iOS device, not quite sure.

By Raul on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

For those who don't know how to archive a backup, on the beta web site there is a link that explains how to do it. HOwever the process is quite simple.
You can only do this on a Mac computer according to apple's site.
Connect your device, from itunes select your device and make a backup on your computer, not iCloud. Then go to iTunes preferences and find the devices tab. There you'll find a list of your backups, find the one you want and open the contextual menu, VO+Shift+M and select archive.
That's it, that backup cannot be modified.

If we get any more specific about the good things or the problems/issues/whatever, we get "polite reminders" of posting guidelines--not so subtle messages to be quiet about it.

So.... I didn't read directions and only have ios backups in icloud. I guess I can't revert to 9?

By Raul on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I think you can but with no backup to restore from, you need to restore as new device.

By Ken Downey on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I'm wanting to revert as well, and also have data in the cloud but not on iTunes. Really wishing I hadn't "upgraded," but if there's one thing I am, it's patient. I'll stick with 10, even though some apps are not working at all and others not as expected. Hopefuly things will work out all right in the end.

By Chris on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

Hello,

If you want to go back to iOS 9, you have to put your device in DFU mode. With the device connected to iTunes on your computer, press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds. After about 10 seconds, release the power/wake/sleep button and keep holding down home until a dialogue box appears stating that your device must be restored. From iTunes, choose restore. That should download the file and install 9 cleanly onto your device. Unless you have an archived backup or one in iCloud, you will have to set your device up as new.

By Toonhead on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I'll be honest...I don't want to have to do all that just to restore my device. I guess i'm getting lazy in my older years, lolol!

By david s on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

Hello,

Don't forget to unenroll your device from the beta site should you decide to go back to 9. Otherwise, your device will still be registered as beta.

HTH and good luck.

By Troy on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

I notice when the beta installed I didn't have to go through that annoying hello setup screen! Here's hoping apple got rid of it or something.

By Igna Triay on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

This Beta is great. I especially like all the new voices added to the iOS devices, and the feature that you can delete apps that you don't need for example stocks in my case. Just a question. In the WWDC, it said that in iOS 10 photos could be described. However, is there a setting for this? I mean, I took a photo with the camera app, and it's not describing the photo. Also, how do you activate the raise to view feature in the iOS 10 beta?

By Igna Triay on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

Is any of you experiencing this bug where if you stand over and app with voiceover, after one or two seconds, voiceover says actions available? Is this even a bug? If not, how do I turn it off, because it is somewhat annoying.

By Raul on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

That is not a bug, it's a new feature. There are actions available, just swipe up or down to see them.

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Sunday, July 24, 2016 - 23:59

he's correct. that is indeed a new feature they've added to voiceover.

By SoundSchemer on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 - 23:59

I'm running iOS 10 beta, and I'm not seeing the enhanced quality of ANY OF THE SIRI VOICES. Hmm. I wonder why. I've done a complete clean about 4 times, and still no luck. However, the pronunciation dictionary is pretty cool. Instead of vo saying iOS, I made mine say "Windows" and for the back button, I've made it say "Minimize data screan" hahaha.

By Fiona on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 - 23:59

I will not update my iPhone 6s + to iOS 10 until the public version is released for at least one week. I am still running iOS 9.3.1, and I've seen too many people reported kinds of issues and bugs when downloading new iOS.
