How does the upgrade process work now? not carrier specific

Hi all. I don't know if this should have gone into where i've put it, or Hardware, apologies if I didn't put this right. Anyway my question is straight forward: How does the upgrade process work now, if you do not, want the pay so much each month, added to what your bill is already. I don't own the account, even if I did, i don't care for the new policy of upgrading every year, paying off the balance to start over. So is it still possible to buy a phone at a reduced price? i'm talking newest model, six S plus or seven or whatever, I'm unwilling to settle for the crumb tossed to me as the five s or something would be. Note: if I buy it at a discount expect me to use it for as long as I can before again upgrading. Thanks for any help. I'm on Verizon so of course customers with them would be beneficial for me to hear fro, but also considering what AT&T would want as I had them before leaving. I'll be moving so the practices I know about, when I go and configure the new setup, I'll want to know what the vultures will try to attack me with their pitches. ;)

/actually I upgrade every two years. But you can also upgrade through apple paying about the same price you would from your carrier. What I do is pay more then that so my payments are cut in half. I'm with tMobile and as soon as my phone is paid off sometime this year, my bill will go down to $60 instead of $80. I do pay more then that though as I want to get my phone paid off.. I'm sure apple can let you do that, or you can buy it outright and charge it. I cannot do that so am paying off tmobial's bank.

have you considered trade your old iOS device?
most of the carriers now include apple offer iOS devices at full price, pay all or monthly payments until the balance remains to $0 but it will be own devices.
Another option is such renting or leasing the devices but after a year your are able to upgrade a new one but have to return the device.
or just simple trading for some credit

This is actually the way we do it in the USA. I've always traded in or sold my device when switching carriers. I like to sell my devices if possible I often get more from someone then the carriers. I got $110 for a 3 year old iphone 5. Other people including my carrier were only offering $50.

I just went through the upgrade process less than a month ago. Because I was already a subscriber to Verizon, they grand-fathered me in and I wasn't forced to do the popular pay for your phone on a monthly basis thing. It's my understanding that, should someone switch over from another carrier, they are forcing the pay for your phone by the month option, only. I bought an iPhone 6S 128 GB and was given $76.00 trade in for my iPhone 5 64 GB phone. Personally, I dislike the whole pay for the phone on a monthly basis thing and I'm glad they allowed me to pay up front.

Most carriers in the US for some reason do not reduce your monthly payments despite phones being paid off. Anyone know of what possible reason to explain this?
