Original iPhone Earphones shot!

Almost a year into using the headphones that came with my iPhone 5S. Initially I started facing some strange issues with the sound volume on them. For example if I received a message on the what app. the volume would be suddenly turned up to full. Sometimes the music volume although turned up to 100% sounds like the music is coming from under a matress. Turning VoiceOver and restarting it sometimes fixes this.

Today, these headphones are absolutely of no use. The volume on them is so low. I tried everything from having the ear buds cleaned with a tooth pick, cotton swab dipped in aftershave etc. I also cleaned the headphone jack and the pin expecting some results but in vain. Now I am using some headphone with no music or call control features. The music sounds as loud as it should.

Anybody else experience this strange behaviour with the volume on their iPhone 5S with IOS 9?

Those earphones usually last about a year, maybe a little more or less depending on how often you use them and how rough you are with them. Even if you take good care of headphones, most of the time, after a while, they'll just short out. You just need to buy some new earpods. They can be found at WalMart and other stores that sell things like that. A replacement pair is about $30 in the US. The volume problem you were describing is tied to voiceover, I've noticed it keeps your sound ducked sometimes, like it just gets stuck that way. You just have to turn VoiceOver off and back on to fix that one.

If you have definitely had them for under a year, you can take them back to Apple and they will replace them. I have had to do this several times.
