I was one of the users who had a chance to play with this at the Pixar event. The app was called "Disney movies" and it was in beta. It has not yet been released, and we only have the ability to activate audio description from the good dinosaur option. It had a whole list of all the Disney movies, including marvel properties and Star Wars, but that did not mean that all of them had audio description ready to be synced up with a movie or DVD. I think they are still figuring out a good way to work that in, plus there was a text field where you would input a code if you have a purchased DVD.
There will definitely be a major announcement once the app itself is released. Not yet
I haven't come across a Disney DVD released in the last several years that wasn't audio described. In fact, Disney is one of a couple of studios that I pretty much assume as a given that when I buy a DVD or Blu-ray from them, it'll have AD now - and thus far I've been right. What are some examples of titles you're buying that aren't audio described?
I saw a post somewhere on Twitter this evening about this app, and I'm curious to know more about it and it's features. I still don't know when it will be out for public.
I'll definitely update you as soon as I hear any news.
I bought last summer both cinderella (the new one) and inside out, and neither came with AD. I bought tangled and frozen and those did. i guess it's just a hit or miss. Let's see if the maleficent i bought will have ad.
That's so strange. I don't have either of those, but I was under the impression that all new Disney and Pixar releases were coming with audio description now. And I'm about 90% sure that my little brother's copy of Inside Out does have AD, but I will confirm that. May I ask how you're confirming that they don't have descriptive audio? Are you having someone sighted look in the menus for you?
I have been using a program on my computer that lets me look in on the individual audio streams of the dvd. the AD always shows up there, because it literally shows me the raw contents of what's on the dvd.
The only things i see are english, manderin, cantonese, portuguese, korean and Thai. Usually in that list would be english audio description or something to that effect.
Every Disney/Pixar film released from 2009 on words contains audio description, specifically the Blu-rays. My copy of inside out has audio description, as do all of the marvel superhero films, and any Disney animations released after 2009, such as big hero six, etc. I don't believe they are doing audio description for the diamond collection of all the original Disney animations, but that may change with the advent of this new app. Maleficent definitely has audio description as my friends brought it over and we watched it together. If nothing else, you definitely should be getting Blu-rays since they will always contain audio description.
I'm also curious to know where you're getting the movies. Not only do all new Disney releases come with AD, but I think conventionally their language tracks in addition to English would contain Spanish, among others. The list of audio tracks you included makes me think that you don't have the conventional commercially released Disney DVDs.
I live in the United States but I buy them in taiwan because they are only like $6 there (currency exchange rates for the win!) and my parents bring them for me because they live in taiwan but fly back and forth for work. i get all my blurays there because of that. it really keeps things cheap.
