Version Of macOS App Was Tested On

OS X 10.10.3

Accessibility Comments

I've tested many of these music streaming services and Deezer is the only one which offers such an accessible mac app. Moreover, they have made notable efforts to make it VoiceOver-friendly upon request. It's a native OS X app and not one of these apps which app which only features an embedded web view (except for the "hear this" tab). Everything is displayed in convenient table views you can interact with if you so desire to get more detailed informations and controls. It's as simple to use a selecting a song in a list and pressing enter on it and you can hear the title / artist of the currently playing song using VO+F2, as this info is conveniently displayed in the window title bar. The space key works to pause / resume a song and you can control the volume within the app using a hotkey. You'll just have to add a hotkey to go to the previous and next song using your OS X system preferences. The app also features contextual menus and a menu bar where available hotkeys are indicated. Tip: Playlists and albums behave as tree views. Use your right arrow key to open an album or playlist, use your left arrow key to close them. You can interact with table views to access more controls in certain areas or to know the type of the selected content.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

If we except some strangely labeled controls and some difficulties to access friends playlists, the iOS app is also totally accessible. Having said that, the Deezer's website itself is quite difficult to use. Deezer is available in more than 180 countries, their catalog is rich and the tech support, at least for the mac app is reactive, as far as I can tell.

As this app is not referenced in the Mac App Store, I've put its direct download link in the Mac App Store URL field.

Finally, if you enjoy singing, Kenya, who has developed the fantastic and fully accessible Singer Song Reader mac app which allows you to search for lyrics, has also made it compatible with Deezer's mac app. You can thus play a song in Deezer to see its lyrics instantly displayed in SSR and you can read them using a convenient, easy-to-read text box. With his kind permission, I've put a link to the "SSR for Deezer" version in its directory entry, as it's still a test one for the time being.

Deezer is so much more VO-friendly after all. Editing playlists is a good example. Deezer is much easier compared to Spotify. One big potential of Spotify would be its massive official lyrics powered by MusixMatch but it requires tens of steps to reach the lyrics window and the focus moves away every time the song changes. I am amazed by Deezer's accessibility.

I notice that in the description, there's no mention of how much a membership to this service would cost. Seems like that'd be useful, no?

Hi,

You're right. But the cost may depend on your country and currency. That's why I've preferred adding a link to the website in the description to discover by yourself. Here in France, I pay 9,90 euros per month.

Ah I gotcha. Yeah, I don't know why they didn't put the cost in the description.

I'm so glad other people use this app. I was only thinking the other day wow it's so accessible and people need to know about it. i'm in the UK and don't pay anything, I can't listen to music offline, and when listening to flow I can only skip a few tracks, I think it's up to 5 before you have to wait a while. The best though in my opinion is that there are know adverts. I think this is a fantastic service especially as it is for free. I think it's 9.99 if you want the paid version but I haven't found a use for it so don't quote me there.
