Thanks to all for your suggestions. When I press on the app to be deleted till it wabbles, no "X" appears.
When I select settings, General, there is no item entitled "usage" to press to get to the list of apps. What am I doing wrong? Very much appreciated.

I was able to delete the app once I turned off the 3D Touch. Many thanks for your suggestions. Merry Christmas to all.
