Force alex on older devices

iOS and iPadOS

Hi all, I am extremely new to this forum. That's because I am extremely new at using an IPhone 4s as well though I got it a year ago :). Since alex is only available in new devices like iphone5 and above, I am wondering if there is a way to installing alex in older devices such as IPhone 4s? By jail breaking, perhaps? Thanks for any answers.

The reason Alex isn't on the older devices is because the processing power wouldn't coap.

Before I got my phone I was still using an iPod touch 4th gen and from time to time, the voices would get choppy, even when using a compact voice.

even on the 5 and 5c, alex isn't available. it's only on the 5s and up.

Yeah. It's because the 5C is a glorified iPhone 5. iPhone 5 hardware, etc. The 5S has the 64bit CPU. Alex will make the 4S and 5 probably break and have a processor melt down, lol! Just thought i'd put some humor in this.

Since the iPhone 5s and above is a 64 bit processor and the iPhone 4s and below are not you cannot force Alex to be on anything..

There's a package on Cydia that enables this. A search for VoiceOver in the standard reps would probably find it, I'm not jailbroken at the mo so can't be more specific I'm afraid. I'm not sure on the technical details of how they got it working on 32- bit processors etc, but I did give it a go a while back on an iPhone 5, and was underwhelmed. In terms of speed it was a lot more usable than I was expecting, but on my device at least, Alex had a lot of weird inflection and in the first half an hour or so of testing I came across numerous things that he just wouldn't read. So although it's possible, I wouldn't recommend it. Probably worth pointing out that I've used Alex on the devices Apple intended him to be on since then, and the experience was quite different.

Alex is available on devices that have the 64-bit processors which were a rather serious jump in performance. The reason that most likely no one will be able to bring it over is pretty simple, Alex is using a completely different synthesiser, called MacinTalk, while everything else, including siri uses Nuance Vocaliser. While you can bring over other Vocaliser voices on jailbroken devices simply by overwriting the data for existing ones, if you wanted to bring Alex over not only you'd have to bring the voice data, but you would also need the compiled binary of the MacinTalk synthesiser itself compiled for the 32-bit ARM architecture and that's something you can't do without having access to the sourcecode.

I wanted to give Alex a try to see if I like that voice better than Samantha. He wasn't an option on my 5S either.

This si because I believe the iPad mini 2 is a 64 bit architecture hence Alex is on their. people, learn this stuff. It's not really that hard. 64 bit means being able to run more complex apps and stuff. On the 32 bit you are very much limited.

Hi all,
I'm playing with a jailbroken iPhone and wanted to see what tweaks were available for Voiceover. Someone mentioned the one that enables Alex on older devices, but searching for "Voiceover" in the sources doesn't find it. Can someone give me the specific name? Do I need to add another source?
Thanks!
