Reading problem with voice over

Hi all,

So I am reading an eBook in my IPhone 4s IOS 9.1 using IBooks. And I noticed something annoying. Please consider this sentence character by character. Note I am using US english sirie male voice.

So I'm going in alone?

The only thing worthwhile here is the question mark in the end, and we expect our screen reader to read this with a tone getting a little higher as if asking a question like a normal human would. Voice over does it well and good. However, say a character is speaking in the book and the sentence is rapped inside double quotes.

“So I'm going in alone?” Jack said.

In my laptop, JAWS read it right. However voice over read it like:

“So I'm going in alone.” Jack said.

With sentences structured like this, it's really hard to know if the character is asking a question or just makeing a statement without an intonation to make it a question. Voice over seems to ignore the question mark if there is another character after it which can be extremely annoying if the question mark is followed by a double quote.

To those reading eBooks, how do you get around this? Is there a fix?

This is an interesting one indeed. I in fact see this too, but haven't really given it much thought till you said something. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who can try Alex if it happens with that voice too.
