New Mac user having trouble navigating Bookshare site

Hello, everyone.

I am trying to get to the New York Times best sellers link, on the Bookshare site, but I am unable to do so. If I press enter or VO-space on a link, I get the message that I am in a menu. At this point, I am totally stuck. VoiceOver says I am in a menu. I am to press VO-space on an item to select it or escape to get out of the menu. Pressing escape does nothing, Neither does pressing tab or VO-left or right arrow. I don’t want to choose any of the menu items. I thought this problem might be a VoiceOver bug, so I unloaded and reloaded VoiceOver. This action seemed to get me out of the so-called menu, but when I pressed on the New York Times link again, I was confronted with the same situation. I just keep going round and round like this. Is there a workaround for this? Thank you for your help in advance. Jane P.

If I get the notification that I'm in a menu when a page loads, I find that pressing vo-right will get me out of it. On the Bookshare NY Times best sellers page, I don't even have that problem, though. Still, try pressing vo-right before anything else and see if that helps.

Hello, Mehgcap.

I have tried VO-Right, and I just get a clunking sound. As soon as I heard VoiceOver say"help menu", I pressed VO-Right arrow, and I got the clunk sound. Thank you for the suggestion, though. I am using OS X 10 Yosemite version 10.10.5. If you think of anything else, please let me know.

Hello, Mehgcap and all.

I was running Yosemite at the time that I wrote my question about navigating Bookshare. I discovered that if I turned Voiceover off then on again or went to the menu bar and then back off it again, I was able to navigate away from the menu. So I decided that this must be some kind of bug. I have since upgraded to El Capitan and the problem has disappeared, so it was obviously some kind of bug. Just wanted to let everybody know, in case there is a new Mac user out there having the same problem. Thanks.

I had that bug on Mountain Lion and have only just upgraded to El Capitan, so far haven't experienced it. I too had to unload and reload VO to solve the problem. My problem wasn't on the bookshare site, I've never been on that site, but on linkedin though I'm sure there are other sites that would have triggered it.
