Alongside its release of iOS 8.4.1, Apple has today released OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 to the public.

According to Apple's support website, OS X 10.10.5 includes the following fixes and improvements:

The OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 update improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users. This update:

  • Improves compatibility with certain email servers when using Mail
  • Fixes an issue in Photos that prevented importing videos from GoPro cameras
  • Fixes an issue in QuickTime Player that prevented playback of Windows Media files

According to Mac Rumors, OS X 10.10.5 also contains a fix for a vulnerability which could allow malware to gain root-level access to a user's computer:

Today's update notably includes a fix for the DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE privilege escalation vulnerability that could allow malware to gain root access to a Mac. Earlier this month, a DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE exploit was found to be in use in the wild, so this is an update that all Mac users running Yosemite will want to install as soon as possible.

OS X 10.10.5 is available in the Updates tab of the Mac App Store.

Hi,

For some reason this update won't install for me. It downloads fine from the app store, prompts me to restart my computer, it then restarts and the setup assistant with "completing installation" comes up. This stays on the screen for about 5 minutes before asking for my password again then it logs in as normal.

After this, the update still shows on the app store, and it still says I'm on OS X 10.10.4 in about this Mac. I've tried downloading the update from Apple and installing from there but this didn't work either.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Did you try updating overnight? This is what I did just a few nights ago and it worked over here. I just let my system do its thing while I was in bed, and when I got up and checked the next morning I had 10.10.5 on here all ready to go. Other than that though, I don't know. This same thing happened to me when I tried to upgrade to El Capitan, but I might've forgotten to actually press the Install button or something. But I am noticing the improvement when sending messages in Mail with 10.10.5. I'm going to try upgrading again to El Capitan tonight or over the weekend.
