Other Comments

At this time of writing there has been a slew of ad blockers to try out for free and paid. At first I had love Purify and was my go to ad blocker. However, something has recently come along which I love better. So give the Adguard - Adblock and Privacy Protection for the Web a look at. It offers more in terms of what you like to block and plus it is free.

Remember that you will need to turn on Purify after you install it for the first time. To activate Purify you just need to the following steps:

1. Go to the Apple Settings
2. Go to the Safari button and double tap on that
3. Find the Content Blocker button and double tap on this
4. Now Enable Purify

This will now active Purify to work with your Safari.

NOTE: Be aware that some site may actually block you from seeing the site if it detects that you are blocking ads on their site. They do this because they
make money from those ads and feel they will lose money.

Happy Surfing!

How does this compare to Peace, the one you did a podcast on earlier? Thanks.

Hello sockhopsinger,

Sadly, the developer had a change of heart about the Peace app and it was removed permantely from the Apple AppStore. It is now forever gone and will never be coming back. Oddly, I have never seen anybody do this before where they had released it and got rave reviews to only retract in what he made.

So with that. I had tried the Purify bealong with Peace when I was testing the different blockers. This was a close second. Which in turn is the top choice for me. Although, there were some really good features with in Peace but this was the next best thing that was a better fit. It also has recieved really good ratings by many sources as being the best.

Ok. Why not make two versions of the app? One version for the iPod touch, and another for the iPhone? I wanted to get this and support the developer and unfortunately, it's not compatible.

By sockhopsinger on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

@themusicman08 did you update your iPod Touch to iOS9? I don't actually have an iPod, so I am only assuming this is possible. If not, there's your answer as I imagine this is probably only compatible with iOS9 since it is the first OS, to my knowledge, to support ad blocking software.

@AnonyMouse, that is a pity to hear about the Peace ad blocker. Very strange, as you said.

Just got it yesterday. So far works well.

By Ka Yat Li on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

I noticed that when I had Purify block fonts, Voiceover became sluggish. Blocking other things seem to be fine. They don't affect Voiceover.

By Mike Freeman on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

I haven't upgraded to iOS 9 yet but, nice as something like Purify might seem, I'd worry that since I don't know its algorithms for blocking things, I might be inadvertently missing something I'd like to see. I'm wary of *all* programs/apps that do my thinking for me and do not allow me to customize filtering.
Not saying anyone else is wrong; just wondering.

By sockhopsinger on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

My understanding is that you can make it so it doesn't block certain websites.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

Suggest for those who are concern check the podcast on purify.

Have apps for blocking ads in safari and web browsers, but is there anything similar that will block ads in apps as well?

By sockhopsinger on Monday, September 21, 2015 - 19:01

Due to the advent of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, Purify is currently reduced to $0.99. If you are on the fence or haven't gotten it yet, now is the time.

I'm just letting people know the sale for the app is expired. I'll still get the app though. I don't often go in to safari but the times I do I think this will help.

By KE7ZUM on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 - 19:01

I just tried again. I bought the app and think it was pulled. I got this.

There was a problem downloading “Purify Blocker: No Ads. No Tracking. Lightning-Fast Safari.”.
The URL “http://a1089.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Purple6/v4/19/78/da/1978da49-e558-fa56-c8d4-6ee2350cd1cc/pre-thinned2716257672427838310.lc.3871680027113764.VGPBYTEAXMOOU.signed.dpkg.ipa” could not be found on the server.
Then the ok button. Can someone else from the us confirm this? If so I just waisted $1.99.

That is odd. I can say for sure it is still available in the AppStore and the link above in the App Entry still works just fine as of today and in the States.

By KE7ZUM on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 - 19:01

Yeah that's the odd thing. It appears you can purchase it but it won't download. The sale also expired but I think I pointed that out. I mean can someone verify who has not bought the app yet if it can be downloaded? That's where the problem lays.. I would not know why the app dead links like that.

Update. I just contacted the developer, so we'll see if there are any fixes to this issue.

By KE7ZUM on Saturday, November 21, 2015 - 19:01

Here's the odd thing. The mac kept failing all day yesterday at the download with that error. The odd thign is this. I managed to download fine using ios. I cannot and will not try and explain that one but I now have it set up and enabled. We'll see if it makes my browsing experience faster in safari.
