Is the ability to record and share video accessible on this app? Also, is easily editing video (as you can do on Vine) accessible?

By Misty Dawn on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 - 04:13

Also, has anyone else beside the app reviewer used this app recently? If you have, what do you think about the accessibility ofthis app?

Hi Misty.
From my experience with Instagram, posting pictures and comments on them work pretty well with VoiceOver. However, I haven't tested out recording a video to see if it's accessible with it or not. Since I'm totally blind, I usually have someone with sight help me with doing the filming part of whatever I want to share wit the world.
Hope this helps. :)

Hello.
I tried to play a video on Instagram yesterday, but I couldn't find a "Play" button to double-tap on. Then I was told you have to touch the video in order for it to play, which most likely means you would have to see where the video is in order to do that.
Does anyone know whether or not if there's a solution to do this with VoiceOver? Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I've found that, if I really want to play a video, I can go into the post, turn off VO by pressing the home button 3 times, tap a few times near the middle of the screen, and turn VO back on. Usually then the video will start playing. It's a weird and multi-step work around, so it's not really worth doing unless you really want to watch the video.

Hello,
Infact you have to turn off VoiceOver also to scroll pages,
after couple of posts you will reach to the end of the feed.
Hopefully they will fix accessibility issues with this app, though it was very accessible.
best regards.

@BRie96 Thanks for the comment. Most of the videos I see on Instagram are ones this DJ I'm a big fan of posts on his page. And I'd love to check them out. Or some of my friends I follow post videos sometimes.
I sent a report to Instagram and told them how it would be greatly appreciated if they made playing videos accessible with VoiceOver. So hopefully, they'll put that on their list of things to do when working on the next update.

I've reported several accessibility bugs with the app, however, I'm mainly received responses saying that Facebook's accessibility team is working with them on those. None of the ones I've reported recently have been fixed as of yet though. Hopefully bug fixes come in soon.

Hi Fawaz. As I said in my reply to Brie96, I contacted the developers of Instagram via the "Report a problem" section and recommended for them to make playing videos accessible with VoiceOver. I explained to them how using VoiceOver is different on an iPhone than when someone with sight uses it, in terms of the gestures.
In the case of the problem you ran into, I would suggest doing what I did, which is contacting them on their website about it. The more accessibility issues they get contacted about, the better. And hopefully, they'll be fixed. :)

Hello DJH20:
you can also email facebook accessibility team so you can just explain the problems you're facing and don't have to explain much since they're aware of accessibility things.
i've emailed them long time ago once and they were so friendly. the problem with instegram that they fix lots of stuffs then they break it again any next update so quickly.
anyway, lets report and wait the results.
best regards.

Hi Fawaz. Thanks for the comment about emailing Facebook's accessibility team. I'll do that and let them know what accessibility issues I've ran into when using Instagram. Could you give me their email address? I can't seem to find it on their website.
Thanks.

In the latest version of Instagram, it is possible to play videos with voiceover.
When you are scrolling through your main feed and you hear voiceover say "Video by at whatever username" if you double tap that the video will play. To pause or stop the video double tap it again.
The only accessibility issue I am experiencing with Instagram is when you take a photo when you go to caption it and you try to type the caption voiceover doesn't give you feedback on what letters you have typed. It also doesn't let you read what you have typed in the caption back to you in order to edit what you have typed.
How would I go about contacting Instagram to let them know about this?
I can't seem to figure out how to send them feedback.
Thanks!

Hi @Kerri. Yes, I was very glad to see that playing videos is now accessible. And unfortunately, yes, I am also experiencing the same issue you are when it comes to writing a caption about a photo or video. The only thing I can suggest at the moment, is just writing a caption and posting it. And if you made a mistake, go to the more options button, and scroll until you hear voice over say, "edit." If you double tap on there, you'll be able to edit the caption that you wrote. But of course, I would definitely recommend contacting the folks at Instagram about this, so they can get this fixed in the next version. The way I gave feedback on the was via the "Report a problem" section. If you go to their website, there should be a "Contact us" link that you can go to. And from there, you should be able to submit your feedback request. Hope this helps. :)

I'm glad to see you can play vids, but what about posting them? thanks.

Hi Teresa. To post a video, you scroll on the screen until you hear VoiceOver say "Open camera tab." Double tap on there, and toward the bottom of that section, there's a video button. Double tap on it, and then double tap on the record button. And you should be able to start recording your video. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell which camera is being used, such as the front or back. But I believe the back camera is usually set by default. However, if you double tap on the switch camera button, it should switch to the front. After that, you double tap on the next button once you're happy with your video. And then you should be able to write the caption about it. Then, double tap on the okay button when you're done writing your caption, and then double tap on the share button. After that, your video should be posted to your profile. I hope this helps, and feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

In the past several versions, I've noticed the following accessibility issues. When scrolling through your feed, unlike in previous versions where you'd read all the captions and you could easily flick to the left or right to go to the previous or next post, VoiceOver doesn't do that anymore. It'll basically just read one photo or video, and then take you back to the main tabs on the screen. Like "Main feed, explore, open camera," etc. It also doesn't read the caption anymore, it just keeps saying, "Photo" or "Video by," and then whoever posted it. When doing an Instagram live video, it'll sometimes kick me out of my stream and bring me to Instagram direct randomly when I tried to have VoiceOver tell me things like who's joining my video and the comments that come through. Last but not least, when I want to check my Instagram inbox for any new messages, when double tapping on the Messages button, nothing happens. After reporting these issues in the report a problem suction to the developers, I was hoping that they would take note of them and fix them in the next update. But unfortunately, they still haven't been fixed. I don't know if anyone else has experienced these issues, but it would be nice if there was an actual accessibility email address to contact them at. Because the only way I could find to contact them was through the report a problem section.

Perhaps like some, I originally tried using the app and when I found it inaccessible, I deleted it and forgot. After some time, especially after seeing posts of friends following me on Instagram, I figured what the hell and gave it another shot.

Now the app is not completely accessible but it is much better then when I first tried it.

Now my question is this, when viewing your news feed, VoiceOver reads the photo/video, who took it and followed by four buttons which are labelled. My question is this, is there a way to have VoiceOver say the name of the person instead of their username? Half the time when viewing my feed, I am never certain, by the username alone, who it may be. If we had the option to change a setting so the full name was read by VoiceOver in the feed, then it would make it easier to know who the hell it is.

Thanks!
