Hi, my name is Codee and I live in the Netherlands.

I have been following AppleVis for a while on Twitter and finally found time to register here. Due to Congenital Rubella Syndrome, I have only 5% vision. This is reduced from 10% in the last 3 years. So now I need to learn more things about the blind world, such as using VoiceOver.

I like challenges and I set myself the ones that are most difficult for a blind person to take on. I like making photos and shooting and editing videos for youtube. I have been editing for 10 yrs and dont plan on letting blindness make me stop.

I currently have an iPhone and iPad. In the future I hope to get a Mac, which will help me take on the video editing challenge.

I love technology and social media, so I think I will feel quite at home on this forum.

Greetings from the Netherlands

Hi

That works for me as I'm only an hour behind you. I'm in Scotland! Trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be Lol

Hi Bryan.

Our skype sessions are going to be interesting. I am originally Welsh. Lived in England most of my life and now speak fluent Dutch so I speak English with a Dutch accent and you probably have an epic scotish accent. Lol Cant wait. And the one hour time difference makes both our lives easier.

Hello Codee and welcome to AppleVis. I have been on here for a little over a year, and really like the site. There are lots of very helpful people on here. I got a MacBook Air for Christmas from my parents in 2013, and my brother-in-law got me a SuperDrive last Christmas. VoiceOver is excellent as far as I'm concerned. I don't have enough vision to read the screen at all. I think I'll end this reply for now, as I'm currently at my parents' new house and there's drilling going on for central air. Kinda a long story as to why I'm not at my apartment, but if you want details on that feel free to contact me via the personal contact form in my profile.

Hi Bryan.

Sure are going to be fun. Hope to be online later in the week to chat. Having a hectic schedule right now. Today I spent pointless hours testing a demo of JAWS for windows. I am in an assessment fase at a rehab center for visually impaired and being asked to test all computer accessibility software to see which helps the best. Kind of frustrating waste of time when you already know the software wont work with the programs you use but you know with a mac and voiceover you can get access to practically the same software. Tomorrow I need to do some video stuff for a birthday, so it needs to be done on time. Then I hope I have some free time that wont cost me pain or headaches. Hope you had a great Monday.

Thanks for the welcome. Wow a macbook air is an awesome christmas present. Had you ever used a mac before getting that one? Did you find enough tips here on the forum to help you set it up? I hope I will get a macbook air or pro later this year.
It sounds like your housing situation is currently hectic. Soon will be my turn. Our house is getting big renovations. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Hi! Yeah I got my Macbook pro over 2 years ago, and just got its hard drive replaced with a 500GB solid state drive, which is the best thing. It's lightning fast, efficient, and I love it now. The previous drive was starting to go, and didn't want to risk it completely failing. It's worth noting that the pro is probably your best bet, the 15 inch has a quad core CPU and is very efficient at hard processing like video editing. I'd recommend the pro, but don't let my decision effect yours!

Hi Justin

Hmm, a hard drive only lasting 2 yrs isnt a goid sounding thing. Is that normal with a Mac? The replacement sounds cool though. A pro would be my first choice but the air is a little more cost efficient. And lighter, which is good for me as my legs dont appreciate holding heavy things. After talking to some youtubers they say the air is pretty reasonable for eciting. It indeed takes longer so would be annoying for daily video editing but i would be crazy if i did it daily. One or two times a week is enough. We will see what happens.

hey.
It really depends on how much you use it. I used the heck out of that drive, so I wasn't surprised when I noticed it starting to go. Yeah, the air is quite a bit lighter, but the newer pros are lighter too. Also, the air costs less than the pro so theres that!

Hello. I just tried posting another reply, but the Internet connection here is rather temperamental. Anyway, yes this is my first Mac computer. I previously used the Echo/Cricket on the AppleII series and really enjoyed them. I had heard and read very mixed reviews though about the Mac in general and specifically VoiceOver. I have really enjoyed my Mac though. In some ways VoiceOver feels to me a bit like some of the Windows-based screen readers, but there are also a lot of differences too. It has worked very well for me, and I love how Apple has just incorporated it into their products these days.

Hi

It sure sounds like you have a lot going on! I'm clearing out my desk at work as I'm leaving on Thursday to start a new job.

Hi Justin. I think it will probably be the cost that ends up making my decision. In the Netherlands there is a 200 euro price difference. But im just happy that i can get a useful computer.

By Maanling on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 - 10:43

Hi Jake. Its really good to hear that you are enjoying your mac. I understand the mixed views and opinions thing. My friends are confusing me currently with that. My sighted friends mostly prefer a mac. But they are all video editors. Or do something with photography or design. Most of my visually impaired friends use and prefer a pc. But are all doing office based jobs and dont use third party programs. I have used Windows for many years and have nothing against it. If it works for a person, why not? But as soon as I try to use it with a screen reader, it becomes confusing to me. I have tried a mac with voiceover and after 1 and a half hours, i could easily navigate. Totally looking forward to getting my own.

Hi Bryan. Starting a new job sounds exciting. What do you do? If i may ask. Yes i indeed have a lot going on. And have less than 3 weeks to get prepared before renovations on our house begins.

Hi.

Currently I work as an admin assistant. On that note I suppose I'd better get my back side moving to work before i'm late hahaha
