Using auto-correct with OS10

Could someone explain how to use the auto-correct feature of the built-in spellchecker? I can cmd-semicolon and that works well, but sometimes I'd rather use auto-correct to speed things up. This assumes, of course, that the process is fast enough to make it worth it. Anyway, if someone could give a quick tutorial on how this is done, that would be great. Thank you.
