Hi,
So the vision rehabilitation specialist that comes to my house to help me with labeling clothing and daily living skills suggested that I get a color identifier to use when on trips and for identifying clothing from the laundry. I am trying to find something cheaper than spending $199 on a regular color identifying device. Can anyone suggest an color recognition app that works well for my needs?
thanks

I know this isn't the answer
I know this isn't the answer you want, but none of the color identifier apps are very reliable. Not because they're bad, but because working with a smart phone camera presents too many variables into the mix. If you want an accurate color identifier, a dedicated device is your only feasible choice.
I agree.
The apps are all hit and miss, because there are too many variables.
A dedicated device is your best bet if you are serious about getting colors and color co-ordination right.
Having tried them all...
The other posters are correct, of course, but if you really can't throw down the cash and want the best you can do otherwise, I recommend Say Color. It seems to be the most reliably accurate, and the easiest to work. You'll want to be sure you use it under bright light, and move it around a fair bit to get a good idea of the proper color of an item.
It'll often tell you several variations on grey/silver for a black shirt, and several odd variations on white for a white one, but it doesn't mix up the two, so you can learn it's quirks and deal with it if you want to.
Not ideal, no, but if you really don't want the dedicated device yet and you're willing to be patient, it's something/probably the best sub-par option for now.
basic tip...
Well, I don't have the cash, though I would like to get a standard device, and most the apps are odd...so the best I've found so far is to get all my bottoms like pants and shorts and such in neutral colors like black, brown, khaki, tan, white and so forth and then you can wear pretty much any top you want and you match pretty much all the time. I'm female, but not a dress wearer so don't worry about that part. Good luck though.
Another Suggestion
As others have said, the color identifier apps out there are not very accurate. I suggest that you try TapTapSee or Be My Eyes for assistance in identifying colors. Just keep in mind that if you use Be My Eyes for this, the volunteer may be color blind.
Identifying Colors of Clothes
Sometimes an app isn't the best way to go.
I procured small metal tags from our local blindness agency that identify common colors with two braille letters: i.e., "bk" = black, "bl" = blue, "rd" = red, etc. then I have a sighted person (my wife in this case) sew the appropriate tag under shirt collars, waist of pants, back of ties, etc.
Not exactly a high tech solution, but it works and is inexpensive!

Looks like I'll be getting a dedicated device
Hi,
I appreciate the feedback given on how a dedicated Color identifying device is better to get than an iPhone or iPod app. I will be buying a color identifier rather than getting an app. Until then, I will use taptapsee to identify color of clothing.
Thanks for all of your help.
TapTapSee
I usually just use TapTapSee to identify the color of clothes, and when it comes to shirts and sweaters, I just memorize the texture and the corresponding color to it, since TapTapSee sometimes takes a few seconds to come back with a response, and even when it does, it's not completely right on the first attempt either.
colors
That what I do. Get colors that go with anything. People at work sometimes think someone helps me pick my colors until I tell them the colors I get. I also tried most of the apps without any success. I am a guy
Audio labels
Hi,
you can use AudioLabels or digit eyes to create your own labels and iron them on the clothes. You may need sighted assistance to setup, but you will have accurate results.
