sort of an unfair thing about trivia crack

Hello all,
I'm not sure if this topic has been brought up already and I apologize if it was, but I heard someone talking about this on an audioboom post and thought I'd chime in here on the applevis forum about it. I like trivia crack, but there's one issue. In the geography category and I thought I saw it in another category in fact I think it was sports or history, I can't remember, but every once in a while I'll get questions like What is this state? or Who is this? I assume at that point it shows a picture. I think this is unfair to a totally blind person because we have no choice to get the question wrong or guess at it in hopes that it's right. Questions like these sighted people or even visually impaired people can have an advantage over a blind person and could even cost them a loss of a game. I wonder if anyone has mentioned this to the developers?

All you do is report it. and say that is' not accessible. theya re getting less.

By Katie P on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 22:56

Another option you have is to use one of the PowerUps. you could skip the question, or eliminate two of the answers, or you can even give yourself a second chance at guessing the answer.
I admit, I cannot remember offhand what the names of these last two PowerUps actually is but, at least between using those, and reporting questions, the game is pretty easy to get through. :)

By Siobhan on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 22:56

Subject line says it. It's skip, double chance and bomb. Coins are earned so you can use them. Personally I wouldn't report as inaccessible because you can get around them.

By BlindEducator on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 22:56

Hi there, I am not sure how much of a disadvantage we are talking about. We have to remember that first of this was and is a sighted game. The developer has been thoughtful on labeling most items. If they were to tag those pictures. Then the disadvantage would be on the sighted with us the blind having one over on them. The catagories with images have been Geography, History, Sports, Entertainment, and Art. Now, on the Art catagory, I have came across question of "What greek letter is this?" Then it continues with telling me the letter since VoiceOver recognizes the letter. Then with the options they had the letters spelled out. So the developer is facing a catch22. Either the advantage is with the sighted or the blind. And if they remove the images, which is attracting to the sighted. If the game is becoming more text based. Then the popularity of the game among the sighted may go away. Thus since not all blind in the blind community aren't enterested with trivia. The developer may stop updates to the app. I too wish the image questions may go away, but let's be realistic here. Most trivia games will either give the edge to sighted or blind. There is no middle ground. I know this won't be a popular comment. But just shining a light to the other side of the coin. Not all can make it accessible and fair for both communities. At times in order to be fair, some accessibility within reason needs not to be there. Other wise, we we'll start having lesser and lesser options.

By KE7ZUM on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 22:56

That's true, I still report them though in case something can be worked out. And look at true faulse quiz. tha'ts all text bassed and it's more popular then trivia crack.

Also submiting question si saccessible but ore on that in a seprate topic.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I think I'm getting the hang of it. I broke level 62 today and I just started this game less than a week ago. I'm still curious though why someone might reject an invite to a game.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I assume in challenge mode all players see the same questions. But how about in CLASSIC mode? Do both players see the same questions on the six categories?

If you cannot get all of the info to accurately answer a question, that question is not accessible. In the case of a picture eing part of the clue, and you cannot see that picture, you might cut the percentage of getting it wrong in half, but you still nothing to base your answer on other than a lucky guess, compared with the sighted player who did not have to cut their percentage of getting it wrong in half, because they were given more information than you were to begin with, and you still won't get the necessary information to answer based on your knowledge of the subject. Would it be fair to ask a deaf person "Who is singing this tune?" and then play them an audio clip? That's the same idea. They could eliminate two of the wrong answers and still not know the answer. But if they were asked "Who made a hit with the song "American Pie?" they might know the answer based on their knowledge of music from what they may have read about.

By KE7ZUM on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I've left aht game as they are starting ot promote the visual questions more and more. We've communicated that this is not fair but they won't seem to listen in any language.

Take care.

By Siobhan on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I know one of my followers on audio boom is on here, so i'll politely try to state my point. You have your principles, I would never ask you to change them. If you think Trivia Crack is inaccessible for you, that's fine, but if you have three options <ul>
<li> guess.
</li>
<li> Ask for help.
</Li>
<Li>
Use a powerup: bomb, double chance or skip.
</Li>
</ul>
Why is it ok for you to say the game is inaccessible if I am happy using the admitted limitted function they have provided? I get we're all trying to get to the same end goal, but if they aren't doing anything about it, is it so wrong to be thankful that a game such as this is playable? My only hope is one day that notifications come in say a day before your game expires, I tend to forget i have games open until they expire. as for the deaf person's comment, I'd say what i think however it's clear there is no room for lbunt honesty.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

In reply to by Siobhan

but I'm still enjoying the game so far. I do use skip if I have enough coins for those questions that are totally vision oriented. like, "what is this?"
Something else: I notice often on my pending games where I have stalled out with five points and the opponents have only say one or two points, they never rejoin the game, they just let it lapse. So I seem to get credit for the win but I don't get any coins.

By Darrell Hilliker on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Hello Everyone,

First, yes, the use of visual-only questions within the game is inaccessible and wrong when there is no steps to make sure we have equal access to the same opportunity.

The fix to this problem should be very simple, though, if only the developer were responsive.

Here's how to fix the problem of inaccessible, visual-only questions for blind players:
Add a metadata flag to visual-only questions in the database.
If VoiceOver is active on the device, skip all such visual-only questions.

The game also has unlabeled controls and some other features that are hard to use with VoiceOver.

Most disturbing to me is that I sent a letter to the developer several weeks ago, and have not even been afforded the professional courtesy of a response of any kind.

I think this speaks to the character of any company.

I believe Trivia Crack is accidentally accessible and, at any moment, we could become totally excluded from the game by means of an update that wrecklessly breaks accessibility.

By Jesus R on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I agree on adding the flag. Though I wonder, how much comunication would be done between the phone and the server from which the questions are pulled? Maybe a switch you can toggle in profile?
In any case, I just skip the question. By putting four fingers on the bottom of the phone, the skip button is the last button, so four fingers on the bottom of the screen, dubble tap, that way i still get a fare amout of time to answer the next question. Skipping the question will still give you one in the same catagory though.

In reply to by Siobhan

I did not say that the game is inaccessible. I said that some of the questions are. That's a huge difference that I hope you understand.

As for the example, and that is the key word, "example", of the deaf person being given an audio clip as info to answer a question, it was an example used to convey the idea of giving a blind person a picture from which to gather info to answer a question. A mere comparison, which should have been self explanatory.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

as far as I can determine, you can only skip the question if you have enough points/coins available. Three.
There are other accessibility issues: for one thing, homonyms. words that sound the Same but have different meanings are a constant source of confusion (there their they're; two to too) for me. Not to mention, the difficulties understanding voiceovers pronunciation of any and all words. I have gotten a lot of questions wrong because I couldn't understand the question or, sometimes, the answers/choices. And have run out of time before I could use the rotor to step through the individual characters.

By Darrell Hilliker on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Homonyms, and other similar concerns, may deal with usability, but not accessibility. You do have the ability to spell words by either listening to VoiceOver or reading the information on a Braille display.

As stated you an spell it with voice over. I'ma wiz at the router and c can normally answer the question with in the 30 seconds. if I need more time I use the coin power up to do it but nrmally I don't.

By charles on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

In reply to by Darrell Hilliker

Braille displays are expensive, and most people do not have them. Never assume that they do.

If you don't know he difference between "to", "too", and "two", that is not due to inaccessability. It's due to a lack of education or a language barrier.

By Roseanna on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Had same problems, but a friend told me about another social trivia game called QuizClash. I guess they just introduced picture questions, but they get skipped if a mobile has voice over. hope this helps :)

when one is blind, using voice over, all three words (to, two, too) sound exactly the same. It is not a matter of language or intelligence. I take it you still have some vision. One word: homonyms.e.g. Feet/feat, weight/wait, tail/tale…
Moreover, the artificial intelligence behind voiceover Pronunciation engine is so abysmal it's difficult to understand 10percent of all words. Granted, it's remarkable voiceover does as well as it does considering it's completely mechanistic. But I get many answers wrong simply because I couldn't make out what the choices were, couldn't understand the pronunciation. and I have tried various voices at various speeds.

Another thing I noticed recently about trivia crack is it doesn't upgrade you to a new level immediately upon defeating an opponent and getting all six segments. Often it is halfway through the next game before there is a popup Saying "congratulations"you have reached the next level." Could be an hour or two later, or like today I got the popup this morning on my game I won last night. Not to mention there is another game I won last night that I still haven't gotten credit for yet. What's this about?

By techluver on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I kinda agree on the visual questions. I've decided not to play trivia crack at all because of them. I play true false quiz instead. Just my view on the matter.

By DPinWI on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

While I agree that the graphic questions are a pain, they don't bother me, not too much anyway. It's a game many of my friends play, and with a couple minor annoyances, so can I.

I save my limited blind advocacy energy for things like phone access and productivity software. They are more important to me than a time waster that but for a rare question is functional and fun.

So, yeah, Trivia Crack is kind of unfair, but I can't get too worked up over this one.

I have been totally blind all my life, so your assumption that I must have some sight is not correct. Let me give you a few sentences to show what I'm talking about: "How about if the two of us go to to the store? Oh, wait. John can go, too. It doesn't matter how much weight John can carry. Just wait, and I'll carry the stuff." Now, are you serious that you can't tell the difference between thosehomonyms by how they are used in sentences? This is either a language barrier or a lack of education. You go "t o" the store. He does "t o o". The "t w o" of you can go. Just "w a i t" until someone can help you if there is "t o o" much "w e i g h t" for you to carry. This should not be a bit confusing if you have a grade school education, let alone a high school diploma. Blindness has absolutely nothing to do with it, especially if you know and use braille. Reading is better than listening, but you can use either or, even better, both, if you are fortunate enough to have a braille display. But the main thing you need is education.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Charles, yore perfectly write of coarse butt Yore still missing the point and I'm sorry 4 the confusion. In the example eye sighted their was know context two clarify the homonym. It was a question like, "the proper possessive use of the word 'there' is A. There, B. There, C. There, D. none of the above. and this has happened with other homonyms as well. But the larger broader issue is ambiguity of text for nonsighted people. By the way, I couldn't use the rotor to distinguish individual characters which would've helped because there is a time limit on each question.

Thanks to the two folks above who tipped me off to TRUE/FALSE. I am checking it out. Also, I've edited my alias in trivia crack to gordocerdo. all are welcome to challenge me there! u2 Charles!

By Kerby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Speaking of powerups, I haven't figured out yet how to use them and what they do. What are the coins for and how do you get them?

By Siobhan on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Ok half of that was sarcasm. The way you get coins is by winning games, each power up costs, one coin extra time I forget how much the others are worth. If you don't want to win you can buy them. skip, double chance, more time and bomb, again like a fifty fifty. good luck my ass gets kicked regularly. ;) I like it though.

By Kerby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Okay It says I have coins but when I try to use a powerup it doesn't do anything when I hit which one I want to use.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

i've been playing for a couple weeks now and I do like it but one thing I've learned is that most of the questions are ridiculously easy and some are impossibly difficult. So in the big picture it just matters how lucky you are when they dole out the question to you.
I still have questions on two issues: one, I don't know how I earn coins, they do trickle in. Too, I don't know how I achieve a level up. They seem to occur randomly to but it doesn't seem to be related to the number of matches I win.
GordoCerdo

By Siobhan on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Hi. For the person who doesn't know how you get coins, if you win you get three I think, if you lose, well you get nothing. :) I'm notsure how the level ups work either or how when you open it, it will say you're at the number so and so spot in the weekly ranking. As for powerups tap on what you want and pay attention. Extra time, clock ticking sound, bomb, well sel explanatory, fifty fifty you see two chances taken away and double chance, you won't see anything just tap two answers you think are right. Irish_storm if you want to play.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

I am going to sing you a game challenge! :-)
GordoCerdo
I have been having some nice players inviting me to games.

By KE7ZUM on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

The levels work with the amount of questions you get right. The more questions you get right the faster you will level up. It takes longer to get to each level though so be aware of that.

For example let's say you get 3 questions right and you need 3 tl level up to level 2. You might need to get 40 right to get to level 15 and another 60 to get to level 16 etc etc.

By Tarbaby on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

i've been wondering about that since I started. I wish you were still playing but then again there seems to be an infinite amount of random New opponents for me. Some of these guys are so incredibly smart they run the match time after time. I had heard there were sheets and gimmicks somewhere on the Internet and sometimes I wonder if people are cheating. I played this one guy five matches and he never missed one question. So I quit challenging him. :-)

By KE7ZUM on Friday, May 22, 2015 - 22:56

Yeah. there is a website with the answers to all of the questions on trivia crack's website. so I think they are all cheating, those that get 100 percent just to rack up points.

Hello, I'd like to update this thread with an extra option.
This topic is one year old, when cards were still not available (they came in August 2015).
Cards allow you to get spins, coins, lives, and gems for free.
If you collect those cards, by acquiring gems while playing and then going to cards machine, you can get extra-bonuses for free.
If for example you play with cards giving you coins and spins, you can get rid of pictures, by skipping questions, without being forced to buy extra-coins with real money or win many many games to get coins.
And if you put a card giving spins in the dashboard, you can have extra-spins every day to spin the wheel again when you encounter a category where you know about a high probability of getting pics, forcing you to face that category only when you just have to pick up the crown.
I am very passionate of TriviaCrack right now and have collected all cards, writing a list of them

http://www.applevis.com/forum/ios-gaming/complete-trivia-crack-cards-list-correspondant-bonus-values

I know developers are working to improve the game for visually impaired people, I have talked to one of them recently, and am longing for the update they promised to fix accessibility issues on cards feature.
But, I feel cards are an extra-option to reduce the handicap given by picture questions.

By Clare Page on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 22:56

hi! I personally don't think that picture questions in Trivia Crack are unfair to blind people. There are plenty of text questions I don't know the answers to, so I'd have to make a wild guess for those, and I do the same for picture questions. With multiple choice quiz games like this, there's always a 25% chance we can get any question right if we don't really know it. Of course there are workarounds, like skipping questions, and it's possible to get cards to make it easier to do that, but it's also a matter of choice how we deal with questions we can't answer, and I admit I like to go for the wild guess method. Each to their own way of dealing with this, though, of course!

By thunderhorse82 on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 22:56

I find it ridiculous that some in the blind community feel as if they are slighted when it comes to this kind of thing. Yes, it might not be accessible when it comes to pictures in this game, however, there are ways to get around the issue and if nothing else take a guess. The sighted shouldn’t be punished or have it taken away just to suit us, they should enjoy it just as much as us. It is reality,, we would like everything to be equally accessible and in that way we have come far, however, there are some things that can simply not be made to be accessible, pictures of this nature for this type of game is an example. Out of all this though, you can still guess the same as if you didn’t know any other question. Just one mans opinion.

By falcon wings on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 22:56

Couldn't agree with the last 2 posters more.
Some the replys on this topic are down right insulting though, but what can you expect from a bunch of --
nevermind.

By Elena Brescacin on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 22:56

Hello, first of all, insulting is not the right way to face problems; let's remember we're talking about a game. Many things are frustrating in a blind person's life, it may be normal to feel frustrated when we find obstacles in a stupid quiz game, but nothing gives us the right to insult; I'd better understand anger and frustration if the inaccessibilities were regarding a public transportation or GPS navigation app, or simply a captcha.
It should be technically possible to avoid picture questions for blind people, letting sighted have them - it's just needed to use the UIAccessibility voiceoverrunning functionality, which gives the code an instruction to behave in a different way when VoiceOver is on or off.
The problem is that Trivia Crack game is not just an iOS game, it's multi-Platform and every Platform behaves differently regarding screen reader detection.
I have another quiz which is called Quizit, and it has an options which disables visual questions from the game settings, but that is mainly a single-player game.
Another problem should be given by challenges: in classic game mode, every opponent should have different questions but in challenges, every challenged player has same questions, so in this case it's very difficult to get rid of the problem with technical tricks by developer's side.
Personally I am giving them feedbacks remembering them to avoid increasing percentage of picture questions or finding the way to allow blind people to get rid of them without any problems. It would be very frustrating if you get a challenge game where in 12 questions, 10 are visual but nothing is a good reason to start insulting.
I am a person who gets angry very often, but when you're trying to make a game accessible to every one, if you hear someone insulting, you may also decide to consider the problem in lowest priority - no one loves to be in contact with insulting people.

Someone said that these kinds of questions are accessible because you can get around them. This does not make one bit of sense. If you get a question like "What flag is this?", a blind person cannot get around this. It can be skipped, but at a cost. These types of questions are absolutely not accessible. Guessing and getting it correct by chance is pure luck. There is no knowledge being used. Also, I really do wish that the time would be changed back to 30 seconds rather than 20, because it can eat up most of your time to read the question or answers character by character if they aren't understood by users of Voice-Over users if there are foreign language words used.

By Elena Brescacin on Sunday, May 22, 2016 - 22:56

I agree with Charles: you cannot define as "accessible" something you can just avoid by strategies.
Generally, Trivia crack is an accessible game, but there are some parts which aren't; this cannot be denied or hidden any way.
If someone says "it's 100% accessible" about an app even if it isn't, that is a lie. I often warn people when I explain trivia crack to other visually impaired users, I say it's 90% accessible, that 10% not, is due to picture questions and currently by cards which have not been adjusted yet - the bonus values are still not read by VoiceOver.

By Elena Brescacin on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 22:56

For visually impaired people who enjoy Trivia Crack game:
Currently, Etermax has increased number of questions based on pictures, making gameplay quite unfair for blind people, forced to spend virtual coins in power-ups or to buy right answers with real money.
This problem can be solved, disabling picture questions.
1. go to trivia crack menu.
2. go to Settings.
3. in Preferences section, disable flag Picture questions.

By Jimmy V on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 22:56

awesome if anyone wants to play me on trivia crack my user name is Jimmyv1130. I love the game and i'm glad it's accessable to us. As for worrying about app updates, I still use an older version of the app to play, I just say later when i get the screen that says there is a new version of trivia crack

Thanks for the tip. I will try it later. I play trivia crack with mostly sighted players including my fiance who is sighted. He helped me with image questions. It will be interesting to see how this works. Quite honestly, those image questions "what is this? Who is this?etc..." can be a bit annoying.

By mendi on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 22:56

I am trying to figure out, have they disabled challenges in trivia crack? I can only find how to create a classic game now. I miss challenges! I see "challenge your friends," but that does nothing. it used to be you could select classic or challenge. I don't see that in the create new game option any more.

By Elena Brescacin on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 22:56

hello, i think challenge has been discontinued... maybe many people used to spam or stalk others? Don't know.
Unfortunately I have had lots of other projects and have not updated the Trivia Crack cards list for a long time, I hope to do it in Easter holidays.
I am using latest version of trivia crack, without any problems.
