document refusing to close

Hello friends:

First of all, thanks for having such a wealth of resources for new users like me. It's quite easy to learn MAC environment with all the help and advise we get from the forum. Now to my query, I opened a document to go through its contents but am unable to close it. I pressed command plus W ttot close the window, but despite voiceover saying 'close' the document doesn't close. No response when I pressed command plus Q. Can someone help as to how to close and how to avoid something like this from happening in future?
