Missing Notifications of App Updates

I remember an operating-system release or two ago that iOS devices had a number next to app icons indicating the app in question had an update. I used to see things like "Settings 1," "App Store 4," etc., or something very similar. I found out this past week that I'm not finding those things present any more because it seemed everybody had their iOS 8.2 update but me. Here I was, waiting for "Settings" to show "1 new item", and it never did. So I went in there, went to the General button, and eventually discovered that, indeed, iOS 8.2 was awaiting my download and installation. OK, so why didn't I know this beforehand with either a live widget somewhere telling me the update was available, or by the "1 new item" badge on the "Settings" icon on the home screen? What do I need to do to ensure I won't miss any of these in the future?

Thanks as always for this group's great knowledge store.

Hi,
What you are talking about are badges. Unfortunately, they aren't perfect. Sometimes a long delay until they show.
For example, the App Store. I've had no badges when closed. But as soon as you open it, badges for 3 updates appear.

Your best bet with the app store is to go in to the store once a day and always click on the updates tab. This is how I make sure I don't miss out on important app updates. Not sure what to tell you about iOS updates except to monitor Applevis as they always announce new Apple updates. The other option is to have your apps update automatically; however, I recommend against this as sometimes the accessibility of apps is broken after an update. It could be rather disconcerting if one day an app you use works flawlessly, and the next day nothing at all happens. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

It sounds like you're looking through settings to find updates, or are not using iTunes ti check for app and firmware updates. This is a very good reason why you should do so rather than checking your phone only.
