In this podcast, Alex Hall demonstrates the use of Audio Hijack. This Mac app allows you to record audio from individual apps, the entire system, or any internal or external microphones you have. Better still, it can mix them together, apply effects, adjust volumes, live monitor, and more. If you do podcasts or anything else that requires recording more than one audio source at once, you can't go wrong with this app. It's also fully accessible, as talked about in its page on AppleVis itself.
To take full advantage of this app, there are a few concepts you need to understand, and those are what this podcast covers. It isn't a complete walkthrough of Audio Hijack, but rather a demonstration of the trickier parts that would confuse most users. You can also read this textual guide to Audio Hijack, which covers the same things as this podcast.

Not hearf my own voice while I'm recording
Hi, first of all, I would like to congratulate you on the podcast, its great. Secondly, I would like to apologice for my english, is not too good.
I'm learning to use the new interface of AudioHijack. I created a sesiĂ³n to record my voice and the sound system and I would not listen my own voice wwhile I'm recording.
Now I have external mic at 1x 1y, system audio at 1x 2y, mp3 at 2x 2y and headphones at 3x 2y.
If I delete the headphones, I don't listen VoiceOver when I launch the record and if I active the headphones, I listen my own voice.
Do you know if its posible listen VoiceOver or the other source but don't listen my own voice?
Thanks a lot.
help creating an audio pipeline
Hi Alex and all,
Thank you very much for this great podcast. Rogue Amoeba has definitely made a great job with this new version, and this audio block approach is wonderfully supported by VoiceOver. However, although everything is fully accessible, I have difficulties visualizing all these connections in my brain... I've tried many combinations but I'm unable to build the audio scheme which would suit my needs. So, could please someone help me building it and give me the correct structure or at least, give me some more tips and tricks to have a better vision of these X Y things?
Here is the audio pipeline I would like to create:
In fact, it's basically the same pipeline Alex describes in the podcast, I would like to create a session in order to record my system audio, my mic and my iPhone to an MP3 file. Everything is OK for these 4 blocks, the output has 3 connexions from the 3 sources. But everything gets wrong when I try to add a new output block to monitor my project. My blocks are displaced and I can't figure out how to rearrange them back...
So, could someone give me the right coordinates to achieve my goal? It could be great if a block could be pasted where we want it to be without displacing everything around...
Thanks a lot.
Audio pipeline created
Hi,
Finally, by keeping playing around with my blocks, I've succeeded in constructing my audio scheme. As a newbie in audio stuff, after having tested it, this software is fantastic. I'm able to record every sources at the same time in stereo. It may sound easy for experienced users but doing this without buying any extra hardware is just impressive for me. :) . And possibilities are endless with effects, audio ducking etc but I still have to experiment. Again, thanks Alex for this podcast, I'm not sure I would have been able to accomplish this without your demonstration.
I've the same problem
Hi, I've the same problem.
I've put all blocks together so they are recorded properly, but I can't hear anything while recording.
My gritt:
External mic at 1x, 1y
System audio at 1x, 2y
Quicktime player at 1x, 3y
mp3 at 2x, 2y
Where I should place the headfone or internal speaker so the mp3 also flows to that output?
Thanks a lot!
Sascha
Re: I've the same problem
Hi,
Yes, You have place the headfone or internal speaker to listen that you are recording.
You can use that:
external mic at 1x 1y
Sistem audio at 1x 2y
Aplication at 1x 3y
Heatphones at 3x 3y
And Mp3 at 4x 2y
I recomend you don't use the mic of the Apple's headphones because you will record the sistem audio twice.
Thank you!
Hi,
Thank you for your help!
But how does this microfone-Thing work? When I've my Apple-Headset plugged in, I can still only choose one mic which is a mix of external mic and internal mic - I don't know how to make AH use only one of them, or should I take different headfones?
Greetings,
Sascha
no keystroke for pausing
wonderfull podcast and thank you. I see in the control menu, a menu itum for pausing the session, however, no keystroke lives for thie menu itum any quick ways to access this or a way to make a toggle keystroke?
You may try
Hi,
You may try setting a kaystroke for pausing in the system preferences, I belife this was under "kayboard". I never dit it myself because I not needed it, but theoretically it should work.
Sascha
I managed it, for the first!
Hi,
I found something out today and want to share it with you, for the case somebody doesn't know this yet.
If you record with AudioHijack and let it output the mp3 bloc to an output device, the output is recorded as well so you hear things twice while you preview your creation.
This can be resolved by taking the output-volume almost completely down, so that you can hear it, but the recorder bloc can't! I set it to 0.3.
To change the volume of the output, do the following:
1. Go to the audiogritt and interact with it.
2. Choose your output-bloc and press VO+Space, a Popover will open which you can hear and voice over announces it.
3. Go to the audio device section and interact with it.
4. Choose the output volume-slider, interact with it and change the value to your liking.
5. Press escape to close the popover and return to your session.
I hope this helps. If you've questions, just comment or email me at sascha.panevine@gmx.de
Greetings,

Driving me crazy
So this is a great app but is driving me a little crazy right now. I'm having a lot of trouble arranging the audio blocks the way I want them.
I completely get the concept, but the problem is when I'm moving blocks around it keeps displacing other blocks, even when I don't believe it should do so.
Example:
1. I add internal mic which goes to 1X1Y.
2. I add a recording block which goes to 1X1Y, and moves the internal mic to 2X1Y.
3. I move the internal mic left, back to 1X1Y, and this moves the recording block to 2X1Y. All fine so far.
4. I add an application block. This goes to 1X1Y, and moves the other blocks to the right.
4. I then move the application block down to 1x2Y. Internal mic remains at 2X1Y and recording at 3X1Y.
5. I try to move internal mic to the left, to be stacked above application. However when I do this, the application block jumps up to 3X1Y for no obvious reason.
I can't always reproduce this exact scenario, but it's this kind of thing, where blocks that should not be displaced are being displaced, and when I'm trying to work with 3, 4 or 5 blocks, it's basically impossible to get them arranged how I want.
Anyone else having these kind of problems or able to offer any advice?
Thanks
I just keep trying until the
I just keep trying until the stuff is connected right. I've even tried a cut and paste with the same result.
