Blindfold Crazy Eights

Category

Description of App

Blindfold Crazy Eights is a fully accessible Crazy Eights card game for both sighted and visually impaired people, designed for rapid audio play.

Blindfold Crazy Eights includes several variants of Crazy Eights, such as discard or draw, and discard or draw until you can discard. Since there are many rules choices for Crazy Eights, you can customize the game for many of those rules. You play against the computer, or against another player in Game Center. And its easy to invite other players to download the game!

The cards are not visible; instead, you play by listening. You can flick up or down to hear the cards, and tap to play a card or draw from the deck. A complete guide to the gestures is included in the help.

Blindfold Crazy Eights tells you if a card can be played. You can customize the game to your liking: how much extra information is spoken and how quickly it is spoken.

Blindfold Crazy Eights was suggested by several blind gamers who enjoyed Blindfold Racer and Blindfold Blackjack.

There is a STARTER PACK in-app upgrade that unlocks all settings features, and gives you a second Crazy Eights game. We'll be adding more Crazy Eights games as in-app upgrades.

The game is completely accessible. The game play area is self-voicing. All other aspects of the game are spoken by Voiceover.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

Works on iOS versions as low as 7.0. It's an addictive game, and quite easy to learn if you're not familiar with it. The in-app upgrade is recommended. A round of the single-draw version can often be finished in only a few minutes, so it's great for killing some time on a short car ride or at a bus stop. The keep drawing version usually takes longer and is more challenging.

I just started playing this game. It's OK so far, except for one thing: if you return to the main menu while playing a game, you can't get back to it since there's no Resume button like in some other games from this developer. And since you can only play the first game type, "Discard and Draw", you're effectively done for the day as the app won't let you play until the next day, or until you buy the Starter Pack. This was especially annoying since I accidentally used the three-finger swipe gesture to return to the menu while figuring out the gestures.

By Toonhead on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

Luckily I was able to purchase the starter pack, but yes, the exact same thing happened to me. Maybe in a future version if a game is still playing a dialogue could pop up and ask if you really want to end the game with yes and no buttons. This way, you could still play if you accidentally do what Kelly and I both did. Other than that, it's a good game and deserves some time. That starter pack is very necessary.

But I'm having a really hard time getting used to the pitch of the self-voicing TTS engine, which I'm thinking is a version of Samantha?

By Clare Page on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

Hi! I got Blindfold Crazy Eights within hours of reading the announcement of its release, and I love it. I must admit that I bought the starter pack quite quickly, because I didn't want to wait 24 hours to go back into a game or start a new one. Having the starter pack means I can play both versions of the game, and I definitely like them both, although, of course, as was pointed out above, the "draw until you can play" version takes a lot longer. I agree with one of the above commenters that there should be a "resume game" button: admittedly, if you go back into the same kind of Crazy Eights game you played before and that game is unfinished, your score will start where it was previously, but the game thinks you've gone back to round one because you've re-entered it, when you could be playing a much later round. I also have an improvement suggestion of my own: once the game is over, when the target score is reached by the player or the computer, could the game reset itself to 0 points automatically, instead of us having to go back to the menu and hit the "reset scores" button? And while we're on the subject of questions, in answer to the one above, the self-voicing parts of the game are spoken by a pitched-up Daniel, although in a way I can understand him being mistaken for Samantha, as he's been put at a similar pitch to her, although he doesn't have an American accent apart from a few pronunciation quirks.

By Brooke on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

Actually, the voice I'm hearing in Blindfold Crazy Eights is definitely a pitched up version of Samantha. She has the American accent, and sounds just like Voiceover but a notch higher. Blindfold Blackjack does have the voice of Daniel, and even though he's also pitched up, I have an easier time listening to him.

By Toonhead on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

Yep, the female voice is quite definitely a slightly pitched-up version of Samantha, and Daniel acts as the computer voice. I know speech is a really super subjective thing so what sounds great to one person is gonna sound awful to someone else. I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me much.

By jrjolley (not verified) on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

I'm not getting any other voice accept his in this game, not that it matters. Addictive and very fun to play.

I got tired of waiting to play Crazy Eights again, so I got the starter pack last night. And I beat the computer twice already! A very well-done and addictive game.

I have to commend the folks at kid friendly software for all this work. Nice simple fun to be had from them and they remind me of the really old accessible games by Robert Bets I think it was, only on our telephones.

By charles on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

How well does the app play? Are there different levels of skill to increase the challenge? I'm looking for a game that is not easily beaten. Also, what do you get with the starter pack that must be bought? Thanks.

Hi Charles

Whether it has replay value depends entirely on you, and is pretty subjective. I like playing card games (and having several to choose from). Card games often have some element of chance or randomness, which determines how hard or easy any given round is. I really don't know if Crazy Eights is the game for you. Maybe test-drive the app, or look up the rules of the physical card game on Wikipedia, and see if it is the kind of thing you are into. The keep drawing version is harder to beat than the single draw version, and the strategy is rather different, but even that can often be beaten in 5-15 minutes if you are good at it.

Maybe Blindfold Solitaire is more your speed? It has a three card Klondike mode, and the one-time-through-waste-pile option, which make it very hard to beat (at least for me).

By Rob on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

It's Daniel full time for me as well. A great game.

By KidFriendlySoftware on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

Thanks for the comments, and I'll try to keep up with this forum. The voices in crazy 8 are based on the text-to-speech system that is standard in iOS 7 or later. The female voice is the default voice, that I modified the pitch on a little. The male voice is from the United Kingdom setting. When using the default voices, you can pick from about 4 English speaking countries (US, Australia, UK, Ireland). The only change you can make is the pitch.

I loaded up other voices on my iPhone, and try to access them via the app, but I can't figure out how to do that, and could find no information anywhere on that. I think those other voices are restricted to Apple's voice-over, and not available to apps.

For the person who mentioned they only got one voice- try seeing what happens if you set your phone as if its in the UK. You can do that in the settings app under international settings. That should switch the default voice to the male, and then see what the app does. By the way, what country are you in - maybe something happens differently with the app's use of a default voice based on your phone's international settings.

I've been finishing up the uno card game, and wanted to find voices for each of the opponents - there are up to 3 that you can play against - and the only way to do that was to significantly slow down the pitch on both the male and female voices. That makes them really different, and I may include that as an option in the game.

As to how good the game is - I looked at several other Crazy 8 games to see their engines for picking a move, and none of them have really devious strategies. The Uno game, though, has 3 levels of difficulties, since you have more options on types of cards to play.

I'm planning on adding the ability to invite other players to the Crazy 8 game via your contacts list and game center. Then you can play against real humans.

Automatic save & restore is coming. And for the automatic reset - I'll look into that.

I am from the UK, using the phone in UK English exclusively. It's not a problem about the voices for me, can keep up well enough. Really like the game though

By Toonhead on Friday, January 23, 2015 - 19:42

I've got an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.2, and US English Alex is the default voice. I also have UK English Daniel, and Australian English Karen available in the rotor under language. I wonder if it has to do with the region you're in? oh my, the Uno game is going to be loads of fun I can not wait!

What's New in Version 1.12

- Automatic card sorting, minor bug fixes, game save and resume.

By Rob on Monday, February 23, 2015 - 19:42

Having only had one male voice from the start, I now have both female and male voices since the latest update. Other changes are great too. Just one minor thing regarding target scores. Say you set a target of 100 and score exactly 100, it seems you have to get 101 rather than 100 before the game is over. The Uno game sounds interesting.

By Melissa Roe on Monday, February 23, 2015 - 19:42

Ok, for those of you who get the reference and wonder why I'm using that for my subject line? I'll explain later on in the comment. For those who are confused, don't worry, I'll explain more.
First off, however, I want to congratulate this developer for making such a wonderful game! Crazy eights was my favorite card game of all time! I can't wait til we have a multi-player mode, so for those on my contact list or game center buddies, look out. I don't consider myself a champion, but I am pretty good at the game. Keep up the good work. Multi-player mode will be awesome! All your games are fabulous!

Now, onto a suggestion. For those who don't know, Press Your Luck was a game show in the 80's. You would be asked trivia questions, and depending on if you buzzed in, or answered correctly from a list of choices, you'd get a certain number of spins, 3 for correct buzz-in answer and 1 for correct multiple choice. Of course, if you don't answer the question right... expectedly, you'll get no spins. Once all 3 contestants have their spins, they take them to the board that is full of prizes, loads of cash, and the dreaded Whammies. If you spin and land on an amount of cash or prize, it's added to your total. If you land on a Whammy, he takes all your money and you're left with nothing. If you get 4 whammies, you're out of the game. There are two rounds of questions and spinning on the board. The person at the end of the game with the most money wins the game. You can also pass your spins if you want to knock out the person in first place, hoping they get a whammy. You can also pass your spins if you are in 1st place and want to knock out an apponent whose close behind you. For those of you who watched the gameshow along with me, you'll know it's a lot of fun. I really loved the Whammies, because they always did silly things. For those who've never seen the show, episodes of the original gameshow can be found on youtube.

I hope I've done a good job explaining things, but that's the way it works. I'd love to have a version of this game on the IPhone that is accessible. There is a version of this game in the app store, but I don't know if it's accessible, and I wouldn't recommend getting it because it was last updated in 2010 and costs 3 dollars in the U.S. appstore. If this isn't a game that will work with your current software engine, that's understandable. If you want help with voiceovers for the game, I'm sure tons of us would be more than willing to help. That's just a suggestion that will be an addiction, and an awesome game if it ever comes to pass.

Again, keep up the great work. Crazy eights is the best game out there, and it's nice to know that I have a version on my phone that's playable now. Thank you again for making these games accessible to blind users.

By rdfreak on Monday, February 23, 2015 - 19:42

I downloaded it last night and was killing time on the train this morning playing it; it's awesome.
I still don't see a resume button unless I missed something. It would have been nice as I had to finish my game which I was winning each round.
Looking forward to Uno! :)

By KidFriendlySoftware on Monday, February 23, 2015 - 19:42

The game actually continues until you reset your score. Each game consists of separate rounds. A round can be interrupted and continued - the RESUME button will appear. If a round was completed, the RESUME button does not appear.

By flcomputergeek on Monday, February 23, 2015 - 19:42

Good morning:
I have a few of the blindfold games and really enjoy them. However, I am noticing a consistent bug in blindfold crazy eights on my IPhone 5S with IOSS 7.1.2. If, while playing the game, I go back to the home screen, switch to another app, or lock my phone, when I come back to crazy eights none of the game sounds play. The voice still reads the moves, but I don't hear the cards being dealt or shuffled, nor do I hear the indicators for beginning and end of the row of cards or the ding that indicates that a card is playable. The only solution has been to kill crazy eights from the app switcher then start it again. I thought I would post it hear in case anyone else has experienced this, and in hopes that the developers can address it in a future update. Keep up the great work, Kid Friendly Software.

If I may suggest a few games I'd love to see, they would be accessible versions of backgammon and lingo.

Thank you.

I've seen that from time to time. We tried a few things to resolve it, but none seemed to work. For now, restart the app - it should resume where it left off. We'll keep looking for a solution.

Crazy Eights is my favourite of the Blindfold games. I like some of the features in the newest version, however, it has introduced a new bug. At the end of the round when the voice asks you to swipe up with one finger doing so repeats the end of round message. I got into a bit of a loop with this until I realised just waiting after the swipe up would start the next round. Previously the swipe up interrupted the message. It would be nice if this could be reintroduced in a later version.

I also preferred the old method of being able to swap between the regular game and the draw until you can discard game. now you have to dig deeper in order to change this. The old way was easier.

One tip I've found. if you don't want to listen to the cards being dealt at the start of every round, tapping once with two fingers cuts all that out and tells you what the card at the top of the discard pile is. I like this feature as it speeds up play.

I wish to thank the developer for this and the other blindfold games. He's doing a great job. Long may it continue.

By KidFriendlySoftware on Monday, March 23, 2015 - 19:42

The next version out will allow you to invite another gamecenter user to play. That changed the main screen to be play solo (against the computer) or play with another person. If we kept the game variants on that screen, the screen got too complex and crowded and was difficult to use.

By rdfreak on Monday, March 23, 2015 - 19:42

I totally can't wait for the next version - mulitplayer games. :)

By Igna Triay on Monday, March 23, 2015 - 19:42

Hy, could you add a option to play your itunes music in sted of having the defolt music?

By KidFriendlySoftware on Monday, March 23, 2015 - 19:42

That's rather complex - I did that in Blindfold Racer - you end up needing to import the music into the app, and then use it. There may be an option to have no music, and then you might be able to keep your other iTunes music app running. Try it and let me know.

Personally I'm not bothered about playing against an apponant, although I recognise some people will appreciate the feature.

I'm glad there's a setting to remove the repeated speaking of some cards. However, the repetition of the end of round notice after swiping up with one finger to start the next round is still present. This is quite annoying as it holds up game play. I hope this can be fixed in the next update.

Apple seems to have updated the British English enhanced voice recently and now Daniel sounds like he has a sore throat. This only seems the case within the Crazy Eights app, not in Voiceover generally.

What version of iOS are you using. What device? In what country do you live?

By charles on Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 19:42

I would like to have an option, in all of the games, which are very good by the way, to use Voice-Over rather than the voices in the apps. I very much prefer Alex. This, however, is a personal choice. I have never cared for British accent in which "are" is spoken as "ah", "king of hearts" becomes "king of hots", and so on.

I'm running iOS8.2 on an iPhone 6. I live in the UK.

By KidFriendlySoftware on Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 19:42

I've done a lot of searching on Google to see if its possible to use voices like Alex from within an app, and so far I've come up with nothing. Only the US and UK voices are available (and some other countries too), but from within an app, its not possible to use enhance voices. Based on that, if you have a good suggestion, I'll try it out.

By Toonhead on Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 19:42

Hi. Here's an odd one that I've never seen an app do before, but I figured I should post it here. I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.3 earlier today. Since then, the app becomes unresponsive after attempting to play a 2 player game from game center. Here are the exact steps to reproduce it.

1. with the blind fold crazy eights app open, swipe over to the button that says 2 player game, use game center, button.
2. Now double-tap that. After that happens, VoiceOver says, cancel button, and the app becomes completely unresponsive. I hear the announcement that says starting game center, for a 2 player game, but I'm unable to get to the play now button, as I said before the app is completely unresponsive. I can hit the home button and get back to the home screen and I can close the app from the app switcher, but can't do anything within the app from this point. So it looks like i'll not be able to play 2 player games. and I was looking very forward to it too. Update I've uninstalled and re-installed the app and rebooted my phone and the exact same thing happens. This is such a bummer.

By KidFriendlySoftware on Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 19:42

The current version - 2.1 - does not let you invite friends; it will only match you up with someone else. I just fixed that in 2.2 and it should be released by apple within a week or two.

By Toonhead on Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 19:42

Yay! I have to say the first update wasn't clear because all those options to play friends were first, and the random option was in there too but I never thought to try it since I'm not a huge fan of playing just random people I don't really know all that well. I'm glad the fix will come soon!

Hi. I'm someone who almost always uses braille to operate my iDevice. If the game were made to actually play well with VoiceOver, I, and other deaf-blind users, could play this game as well. Could this please be considered for a future release? I know it's not always practical like in the racing and bowling games, but the card games would be awesome to be able to play as a deaf-blind person. Thank you for reading!

Scott - we could add voice-over ability in the app, but the problem is once voice over starts, you cannot really stop it. The game use text-to-speech features so I can control when things start and stop. All the games let you stop the talking by touching the screen again - it makes the games move much faster. If I add another option for voice over, the game would probably work with braille devices, but game play would be slower. Is that acceptable?
